For whatever reason, post some YSI's of some performances that you'd like others to hear. I'm sure many of which everyone has heard, but there might be a few of us that haven't heard it(them). So share away. :)

I'll start.

Lover Lay Down - 6/24/01

http://s40.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=0MK00RG8HZ9AY326PCH05XJQ6X

In a sad year for consistancy and really bland performances, there were a few select shows that stood out and a few select performances that really shined through the muffled disapointments of 2001. Lover Lay Down has always been LeRoi's song. But I think this may have been his FINEST performance. Noodling in and out, flowing together a string of beautiful complimentary notes that did nothing shy of swoon the band and the fans during this version. Gorgeous.
-----------------------------

Seek Up - 6/24/01

http://s40.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=33QUPFHFT5EM73NLZWXA1PK68Y

From Lover Lay Down into Seek Up. Now it can be debated that this wasn't really a segue or any type of transition per say but Carter and Stefan do seem to be keeping the notes going from LLD when Dave starts the Seek Up intro. At any rate, this is one performance that is, rightfuly so, overlooked because of 7/30/01. But 6/24's Seek Up is just a solid and well performed. No hesitation, not restraint. Dave's wail is tame but still carries with it an emotion that is marked only by a fantastic Roi intro, and a beautiful Boyd lead into the climax. Butch is VERY present and adds a ton.
-----------------

I'll be adding more later. Share whatever you want. Or don't. Either way, enjoy. :)

Blue Water - 2/4/93

http://s40.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=3SWEVFK1T6HYN0KZL151A375GK

There weren't THAT many performances of the song, but for the short time that Blue Water was consistantly played, it showed Boyd at his finest. 8/19/93 is probably the best and most eerie performances of the song, but 2/4/93 is a version that is never discussed. It was the first time Blue Water closed out a show and both Boyd AND LeRoi put forth some very dark moments here. One of my favorite and most listened to performances.

Starting off with the first thing that comes to mind whenever I see this type of thread: Typical Situation from 12.2.98. Tim and Bela fill in the song really well and Butch's solo after the happy jam is easily my favorite solo I've heard anyone in this band do.

Nature - 8/6/94

http://s40.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=3U6AEVXC5VIJN04412W5DWDGG0

With only few semi-full versions of this cover, 8/6/94's performance was perhaps the most fun of them all, with Dave even citing "this is a first" before diving into the song. Even though it wasn't the first time, it was only one of a handful of tributes DMB gave to thier good friends The Samples.

it was nice meeting you at msg!

just go to yousendit.com, select upload file and then find the file you want to upload for the email address you want to send it to, just put in your email address and hit upload (i think, something like that) and then wait for it to upload. some times is takes fooooooorever, but it seems like it is fine tonight. then copy and paste the link to a reply box, either putting xx instead of tt or using the html tags button in the advanced reply box!

Bartender - 12/14/02

http://s40.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=1SW9I6H85RJVK12Z2GSIVL6INK

Along w/ the best performance of Loving Wings, as was posted by Alex, DMB pushed through one of the most overlooked versions of Bartender. From every angle this performance screams passion, which the song is surrounded by. From Carter's ever-growing poudning, to Roi's penny-whistle outro, to Butch's solo, and to Dave's wail, 12/14/02's Bartender is a version that should never go unlooked.

The only '03 D&T show I really enjoy, with the exception of the openers for the D&F's tour. I REALLY love Busted Stuff both full band and D&T. Either way the suave groove is so prominent through the playing and vocal performance here. I love what Tim added to the tune.

Ants Marching - 1/30/95

http://s40.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=34F1VVK7GLMB132WFWT2QOOMOR

1995 is my favorite year from DMB. There's so much to love and learn from that year. It was the transition year for DMB going, literally, from clubs and halls to playing Arenas and Amphitheates. The energy never slacked. You'd be hard-pressed to find a '95 show that was lacking in any catagory, especialy energy. I know people love the wail on Ants Marching replacing the high notes Dave sings, but I tell ya, I still love the old versions with the high notes. It gave the song a more rootsy feel. One of my favorite performances of Ants Marching, being performed at a club in Rhode Island.

Hands down, my favorite version of this song. Everything is perfect. Boyd, Roi, Carter, only the second/third time Butch took a solo on the song. Dave playfully sings through some of the tune, which obviously shows he's having a blast. Also, 9/2/00 is one of Dave's finest "solos" on Jimi Thing. Dave Butch even go back forth for a few. If there were ever a best of 2000 compilation made, this Jimi Thing would be one of the first songs I would think of to put on there. This is just one of those tracks that you have to turn way up and you'll get the feeling as if you're there.

Great show for my 1st one ever. Still one of the better shows I've seen. That warehouse just kicks so much ass. And even WYA closing the show was awesome(it was my 1st time though)

#41 - 8/1/96

http://s40.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=2DSJ7PUMP2AY61VTKTC77ZVWPC

In my humble opinion, the HORDE '96 run remains one of DMB's most energetic runs...ever. From every song performed, they put forth firey performances and slick versions of everything, leaving the crowd to errupt with cheers after an amazing solo by whoever. From 7/16 to 8/4/96, Jimi Thing, Billies, OSW, Too Much, even Crash gave way to the sound of a band still pushing for acceptance toa crowd that already loved them. This #41 leaves no trace of hesitation, no going through the motions, no moment of pause for what to do next with a solo. This #41 is as pure as the versions from before it was even recorded(1995).

Getting Higher Jam - 8/1/96

http://s40.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=06LOMSV5RLV50F0EN9WRIXHST

What we all wish DMB would do more of. It wasn't something amazing, this jam wasn't jaw-dropping or anything close. But this little diddy did show us that when DMB does have fun and gets enthused enough and inspired enough, they're not affraid of just fucking around. The Getting Higher Jam, which came directly after the #41 had a distinct feel of the tune, and showed a DMB just having fun which has never failed to lead to great things.

All Along the Watchtower with Greg Howard:

//s56.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=2I04YRNL60X9U3F87PCLHKFYS7

Among all the Watchtower's played, this may be one of my favorites, simply because of Greg Howard's phenominal intro. In addition, I miss Boyd's plucked solo. This song is one of my favorite in the DMB catalogue (cover or not). Enjoy!

Boyd's best solos were the fall '96 ones, where he would pluck at first, and then start bowing as the band slowly came in.

I was about to put 10.1.96 up, but the damn CD is scratched halfway through the solo. :rant

Bartender - 7/25/01

http://s40.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=0CDBZJ07BY2SS26P6NPHGL92CH

With Jeff Coffin wailing away through the jam, DMB smoothed out the most energetic performance of Bartender to date. This is the closest you will find to what we got from the LWS jam with Roi at the end. So much muster in a few minutes really captured the essence of the song nicely and it was nice to see Jeff rip a solo with Bela having to back him.

Nice call with Satellite, but I wouldn't call it the only decent one. Pay For What You Get and Help Myself both came out extremely well, IMO. Whenever I hear a full band Pay For, I almost always think of the horn section.

Watchtower - 10/1/96

http://s40.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=16EEYT576H7H1355956PHK8MHO

Nothing spectacular here. It was just another in a string of solid Watchtower peroformances in late '96. I've never beena big fan of Boyd plucking solos, but with the latter part of '96 he started plucking then in the middle he went to playing normal which brought the energy back up a bit.

Watchtower - 10/6/96

http://s46.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=18IIFLR9V9BJL0ZNJK6GDTWAYB

FUCK. THAT. SHIT. The infimaous Watchtower where someone threw up a t-shirt and it hit Dave's mic and knocked it into him. Now, ya can say, "what the fuck is so great about that?" and the answer is nothing. But what is great is the way the band goes back into the song after they stop. One band member starts off, I think Dave, then another, and then the whole band simutaneously comes back into it with more grit than what they started out with.

This is just sick. It's the Samples playing 'Feel Us Shaking' with Boyd, Roi, and Carter backing them up. Carter keeps a nice beat, Boyd fits right in and hits come nice solo's, while Roi is just plain hauntingly beautiful with his work... possibly one of the best Roi solo's I know of. Plus, it's a cool song! :)

http://s46.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=15VOCAT151WES2XCV71WREDVXJ

This full band acoustic performance is my all-time favorite version of Satellite. It's quiet enough to replicate the intimate feel of a D&T version but the strcutre of the full band to keep you remembering the roots of the song and why you love it. There's just something about Carter on percussion(bongos) with certain songs that really give a different look into maybe how he(Carter) came to creat his part around those songs.

great thread. i'm currently in my law school library but I'll list 2 of my choices. maybe someone can up them for me, if not i can do so tomorrow.

8-3-01 Grey Street. I was at the 7-7-01 show so I saw a great one there. but the energy is even better in this version. The extended jam is perfect, and the vocal delivery is also top notch.

5-30-98 Two Step. My first show as a real dmb fan, and the band was on fire that night. There is an article somewhere where Dave picks that show out specifically for how much energy the band had. It was an electric night at alpine, and this song set the stage perfectly.

Arguably the best Bartender
http://s7.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=3PKLVSRYV9NBY3F9XNBHLEY87T

Here is the outro from Bartender:

falling in alone
oh then we fall away
cause someday oh in my dream
before me there stood God
there spinning around
oh and around
he said there my son
what are you wanting
in your life
i want to believe
i want to believe
he said you're there alone
but I don't believe you're real
cause you're never there
never there
oh i'm never there
oh i want to believe and i
i want to believe
don't walk away
you believe in love
rain down on my lullaby
love i'd love to believe
your belief
oh there
you love me
love right
i'm right
you beat up all yeah
all yeah
if i'm wrong
cause i'll fight
cause i'll fight
cause i'll fight

Seek Up - 6/24/01

That was a pretty amazing night for me. 10th row seats for my 2nd show and backstage passes for the after show (met dave and boyd). In the "alternate recording" you can hear Dave say after seek up "I had to put that there because it just sounded right and was the perfect place to put it" and then said "we'll follow the setlist from here on out." It was probably also one of the better run of songs from '01 with So Right/Minarets/Lover Lay Down/Seek Up. Not to mention the 2.5 minute captain tease in the encore. good show and great performances :upyours

Really great version. Lyrics below
hxxp://www.beta.yousendit.com/transfer.php?action=download&ufid=E0EC070947CBD5B3

I have a dream
as I slept deep last night
just how wonderful I could be
if I was to arrive
I thought maybe colorful
and plastic I could be
a plastic superhero
that's what I want to be

I'd have a plastic cape
of the brightest type of red
and two plastic arms
that I'd flap in the air
oh and I'd cover my back
in a bright red plastic cape alone
and I rolled up my dreams
in my plastic coat for justice for all

oh and when trouble rose
I would swoop down out of the sky
and I would feel with the plastic problems
and I'd raise up my flag right up
and my plastic eyes would be proud
looking down on the plastic world smiling
and I'd feel my plastic asshole loosen
as the world came into my fingers

whoops
oh then the thought
I worried what would be
would I know plastic winters
it we'd all stay blue red and green
nobody wants
while I would decay
maybe a world
where all plastic gods would reign

oh and raise our arms
and we beat our class all to death
and all our plastic pride will swell up
in our plastic hearts so plastic beating
and we would rage the world
we would melt it away in a moment
where it all would lay me down
I swear I could made it on

and rolling all remain
would fall aside on there
and we'd brightly sign forever love
and oh no one's old
nobody rivals here
a beautiful yellow plastic world

#36 - 7/26/95

http://s65.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=243BCL3WYC5YA2FY2DN9LZQX5Z

August '95 often times overshaddows great shows that took place duuring July and the few in the beginning of Sept.(9/3). 7/26 found Dave feeling pretty good as he mentions countless times throughout this show. So good, in fact, that Dave even does a "call and response" with the crowd during this #36. I believe this is the only time Dave has ever done this. Really great and solid performance of a song which hit it's peak through the late weeks of July and early weeks of August.

Say Goodbye - 8/7/98

http://s65.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=0HQWAS3OCYVOR0FDCSZQ6FLPEG

Say Goodbye closed out the show this night. DMB hadn't played Say Goodbye in an encore since thier first of two shows with the Richmond Orchestra back in early '95(2/14). It was the only song in the encore, which indicates a few things. Either the band had two songs scheduled and Say Goodbye was one of them, but they ran out of time and just stuck with SG, or they scrapped thier encore set and just went with an impromptu version. Either way, this performance with Bela Fleck, remains one of the finest versions of Say Goodbye. There are times where certain songs don't seem like they belong in a section of a set, like Seek Up on 5/11/99, but when those times arise, great performances emerge.

Tangerine - 2/18/96

http://s65.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=14F2V4ZFUVG2Z365I6V87XSTSD

The return of Tangerine which hadn't been played in over two years. Ya gotta think what initiated that comeback(albiet short-lived). Whatever it was that sparked the idea to play it again, it was a nice touch to an already impressive and successful tour for D&T. Sadly, the crowds got worse as D&T tours followed, so I'm glad the small two show comeback took place in a year where D&T shows felt more intimate.
--------------------------------

Weight Of The World - 2/18/96

http://s65.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=1N3TMZ39DNYRF1CZNORHMYC1IM

From the same fantastic show comes the early and very haunting beginnings of Don't Drink The Water. Weight Of The World would, of course, turn into "Leave Me Praying" in 1997 and then DDTW for BTCS. There's something about Dave's playing on this song. Maybe it's the way he spaces out the rythem, or connects the vocal arrangement ontop of the chorus. There's a dark reflection in Dave's playing that really makes this song eerie in a sense. Much like Deed Is Done and Dreamed I Killed God were the darkest things fromt he '97 D&T tour, Weight Of The World was black tree of the '96 D&T tour.

Warehouse - 5/31/96

http://s65.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=1D8IX8FQJJP0B0QGL2I59EPGAF

Personaly, I would love to see the old intro to Warehouse comeback for a short while. But I do love the "woo"s because it gets the crowd really into the song before it even takes off. This performance of Warehouse has the earliest known appearance of the infamous "woo" on the song by the crowd. And this was in Italy no-less. A great show, great energy, and great crowd, all three ingredients set by one another. One of my favorite '96 shows and one of my favorite versions of Warehouse.

Dancing Nancies - 6/13/97

http://s65.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=10OWVF7NLOSGI2LQAL4SNQ5C81

Among the amazing and classic performances with Bela and Jeff throughout June of '97, there were some perfect versions of songs covered by the attention of shows like 6/8. 6/13 isn't better as a whole, but there are a few performances from this show that proved why in 1997 DMB were dubbed "The summer act of the year", a title which they would hold, consecutively, for 4/5 more years. This performance of Dancing Nancies is just as energetic and bold as versions from years before.
---------------------------------

Seek Up - 6/13/97

http://s65.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=28HNEIEE2GVHH0IVRKCQCL4TSR

6/8 and 6/10 may be the overbarring contenders for better Seek Up's during this time period, but Roi's intro really struck a chord with Carter here as the two go off on a very powerful intro. Oddly enough, Dave stopped doing the wail for the '97 versions of Seek Up. You'd figure with the loss of the wail the song would just diminish and become repetitive and boring. Hardly the case here. Boyd and Bela string together and compliment one another in a gorgeous and lulling jam that doesn't stray too far from the core arrangement but just enough for you too keep notice. A solid performance, to say the least.

#41 - 11/9/96

http://s65.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=1U9ORYC6KOQPE3NSYD2X8ABT3J

Arguably, one of the finest shows the band has ever put on. The energy from the HORDE run of that same year carried over to various shows for the rest of '96, and 11/9 is the pinnacle of all that energy. Performances like this really make me miss the Chet for certain songs. This is the cut from the FM source which was broadcasted in '96. I love the reaction of the DJ after this #41, "....woah".

An oddly scheduled show at the Orpheum Theatre in Boston. I often wonder if it was a show that was rescheduled for whatever reason or a last second decision after the band had gone in the studio. At any rate, 12/5/95 is a show that sponsors sporadic enery. The band had been resting and recording but it was very apparent that 1995 took a lot out of this band. They were tired and it showed in thier played. This version of Recently feels like DMB on thier last leg, just pushing with all they had left, all they could muster to try and put on a good show/performance. It seemed as if most of what DMB were fueled by had been emptied by the end of the year but they gave it thier all, as usual, and this Recently is proof.

Seek Up - 6/23/95

http://s65.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=1HXIPCBGF6QKS2QLI0VN0XH14G

For DMB's second trip to Europe in 1995, they played some festivals in England, inlcuding the Glastonbury Fest. It's never been confirmed but highly speculated that this recording was ripped from the televised performance. It's a sbd, but was never aired on BBC radio, so it's tough to assume it's a broadcast. A fantastic version smack dab in the middle of a year where DMB were still trying to win over crowds that didn't know them. Boyd is perfect, as he always was in '95, and in this particular version if you turn it up just a bit you'll notice Stefan very vibrant throughout, not just during the intro.

A love/hate relationship battle between many fans occurs when this song is discussed. I for one love the tune and think it had great potential. It had the touch of classic DMB(Billies), but with the power that DMB had grown acustomed to with thier ever-growing maturity level in 2000.

Musicaly, they're gorgeous but vocally, yeah. Dave kinda slums through them. I don't hate them, but when ya compare the passion that Dave sings with during the song on the older versions, the newer ones do seem dull in that aspect.

What Would You Say - 7/8/00

http://s65.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=2JVYW0EOC2S8C0OBBEZ6SRZ7I7

The 2 night stand at Foxboro in 2000 was night and day. 7/8 was slow, uninspiring and lacking in a great many things. Then the next night DMB put on one of the best and most energetic shows from 1999 - 2001. 7/8/00 didn't start out bad. The first 4/5 songs were fantastic which would lead you to believe the show was set to be a classic but somewhere it fell through. Seek Up, STJL, WWYS and R&R was the opening run of songs. After that run, the show went downhill. The WWYS from this show is nothing to top many others but I just found Roi's solo on this very funky and I love the work between Carter and Roi during Roi's solo.

Seek Up - 7/8/00

I hate to continuously post Seek Up after Seek Up, but there are so many amazing and standard-setting performances that it's hard for me to just post one or two. Others from '00 were slightly better, 9/2 and 9/16 to start, but 7/8/00's Seek Up is a performance that defined that era for the band. They were playing slower, not as much energy, but the musicality and sound structure were not lost and actualy took the lead for pesedence over the energy. I'm kinda glad we have some years that weren't balls out energetic. It gave us a better and easier look into the arrangements and how certain songs were strung together. Roi, Butch, Carter, Boyd, Stefan, Dave, everyone is spot on during this version of Seek Up. If you DL this one, crank it. Trust me.

To cap off D&T's 3rd tour, they were asked to perform on Storytellers. Story has it that DMB were asked but Dave was already in the middle of the acoustic tour with Tim, and the band was booked pretty much solid for the summer so Dave decided to just do it with Tim after the tour. This cut is from the official Storytellers compilation, so it's a clean SBD. Gorgeous performance, as you all know.

All Along The Watchtower - 5/26/99

http://s65.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=2F0Y40P5PMTYT0W4FY0HJO3WRK

One of the finest shows DMB has ever put on. 5/26/99 can be looked at from every angle, and you'd find the right amount of whatever that would make up a perfect show. Great energy, especialy in a year where the tempo of almost everything was slowing down. Butch, who is so prominent on everything he played on. 5/26/99 was the precursor to 9/11/99 and the '00 tour, as far as Butch's playing is concerned. But the icing on the cake for 5/26/99 is not Bela who added a shit ton to Two Step and other tunes, but it was Carlos Santan who went balls out, ripping through one of the finest solos Watchtower has ever seen(as far as DMB's version goes).

A bland and tired weekend that saw a tense and agrivated DMB. Only VERY few performance from 8/30 and 8/31/03 are even worth mentioning. On the flip-side of that is The Stone. Oddly enough, from a "blah" show, came one of the best performances of the song, to date. Carter has always been the base of the song and at this point in '03, he took it as far as he could. If you don't have this show, then get it. If you're not sure why you should have it, then here is example #1. Jimi Thing from 1995 was fun, it was groovy, it was loose. It had the tendancies of old DMB but the playful spark of a band who was putting thier heart and soul into thier live show. This Jimi Thing remains one of the finest from a year of consistantly "on" perfomrances of the song.

Ants Marching - 6/30/96

http://s65.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=2LEEJL0I1AR8I1UU2O0BVVOW8F

Festivals were always great to and for DMB. They won over the hearts and ears of so many music lovers through HORDE shows, Farm Aid events, and overseas festivals. DMB's second European trip found DMB playing Germany and England for the bulk of thier time there. A few shows elsewhere made for interesting stops. Here on 6/30/96 DMB played in Denmark and kicked off a small, but very vibrant set roudning it off with Ants Marching. The '96 shows were raw, yet had a flow like no other. The Crash tour proved to be one of the band's most successful as in terms of bringing in new fans. It seemed ast if DMB were heading in the right direction overseas. It's a shame they couldn't keep it going after '98. At any rate, here is a fantastic Ants Marching from this Festival in Denmark.

I've said it before and I'll say it again; at the risk of sounding gay, this is Dave's sexiest vocal delivery to date. Just outstanding. Not only did Soulive produce such a subtle groove but the choice to use Dave for the vocals was the right decision. The delicate touch Dave gave for each line, as if he was lightly breathing on a glass window and writing out Ani's lyrics on the collected myst. Such a great track.

Seek Up --> Heartbeat Jam is my favorite opener to a show. 9/16/00 is also one of the best shows of '00 and this Seek Up is so solid and pure. Boyd's solo on this may be one of his finest from any Seek Up.
