So I'm basically taking Jack's idea from ufck and seeing if it doesn't get started up here, because I liked it. Basically, someone suggests a show they dig and folks all DL it and discuss in here. Seemed like a good idea for the offseason.

Given the ballwashing the tour has gotten recently in the last few months, I figured I'd go with a Spring '02 show. Tour debut of So Right (and debuted to open the show no less) and the beginnings of Gravedigger.

I still have a soft spot for that early version of gravedigger; it's not as dark as the final version, and I almost prefer it that way.

I like this idea of all downloading the same show and discussing it. I just stumbled on this now, not sure when it was posted. How long are we going to have to dl, listen to the whole show, and discuss? Maybe once a week? If I'm not too late I will download tomorrow and listen whenever I get a chance.

i was there. really a good show, insane energy. still probably the best liog ive heard. ill listen to it over the next night or two before bed and give more thoughts. the one thing about this recording that bugs the shit out of me is there is a whistler. its not horrible, and the actual music sounds great, but the dude bugs the shit out of me.

Im all for this.

If we could do this, could we keep the first post actively edited with the present show up and links to the other setlists?

Also, have the regular posters in the thread alternate show picks instead of everyone just agreeing on one to pick. I think that would give people a bigger selection of shows and would gear the discussion towards the show picked instead of which show to pick

Id love to run this if no one else does...

Or just make it a weekly thread, every time a new show is decided on start a new thread. That way the conversations can be separate.

the yoink, the awesomeness of the wya outro which commences at 5:03 and the origins of gravedigger would be a solid start.

Basically once discussion of one show has died down, someone chooses a different show.

And I can keep the first post updated, sure.

Show Comments

Salem College is an all-girl school in Winston Salem. I got a call
from Carter about 4 that afternoon telling me they were coming into
town. They had a local sound company come in and do the PA, Jeff was
on FOH. Probably about 50 or so people there. I ran a matrix from
my AT-813's and a stereo feed from the board, thru my Yamaha MM10
Portable Mixer. Mainly board, very little room, very clean
mix. This was in the cafeteria of the school. NO ONE (including the
band) has this, there was a DAT in the FOH rack but Jeff didn't bother
to roll it.

This show doesn't appear on any of the sites (antsmarching, etc.), so
it's one of those "lost shows". Except for about 10 seconds of
diginoise/droput in the 2nd set where the tape got chowed when my
3700 was screwing up, it's PRISTINE.

This is hot DMB, when they were NOBODIES and had no idea they were
going to break. They're just a hungry young band, trying to make
it out of Charlottesville. The "Rick" that Carter is dedicating
Halloween to is ME!

The band had originally asked me to sit on this (in '94). It's been
long enough that I don't think they'd mind it getting out. My master
is the ONLY COPY of this show.

Please show me the respect of passing this on as you've found it, and
including this text file (signed & unmodified) in any upload.

Enjoy!!

All right... 4.2.93.

I crack up everytime I hear boyd speak to the crowd. I swear he's trying to get his johnson played with. Poor guy. Poor Fonz... i dont think he had hit puberty yet by this show.

If you listen to the mix early, you will notice some things that arent too common in early 93 recordings. Fonz is clearly audible on almost every note with out being bass heavy. He floats easily in and out of the mix and makes for such a clear listen. Roi also seems to cut through more clearly. If you want to talk about something off, it would be boyd. He seems to be a bit high in the mix for a lot of that songs, but that could be of how he was playing in relation to dave. At this point, boyd seemed to be filling more of a direct accompaniment instead of working on fills.

Setlist/performance: Wow. It isnt energy that brings these songs up, its their bounce. The band seeems like they are having fun everywhere on this show. These guys know that they are coming in here relatively unknown and you can hear the crowd getting won over between every song.

LIOG features a sped up solo section that was common at the time. Many people forget that this changed later and it may be a pleasent surprise for an unexpecting listener.

jam->ants. Ehh... doesnt do it for me. YMMV. Takes a long time to go anywhere and the style that it does isnt great.

Warehouse seems to gain a bit of a swing tempo during the breaks. Roi takes a small sweet solo and just runs it down nicely. Its something different to a song we all are familliar with.

The first half of the third disc is a bit of a stretch for me. HM and spotlight dont do it for me. Sorry. This disc explodes though with a nice Minarets->BWBF to a Halloween closer. I guess if you view the beginning of the disc as the biscuit, then this was the gravy.

Great show, great pick. Pick this gem up. It was a show that was long lost and now that we have our hands on it, it shouldnt be missed by anyone.

I finally got a chance to listen to most of this show (up to PFWYG) and I really loved it. Great upload. Great to hear any soundboard of any show, but especially a 93 show. Boyd is a flat out pimp dedicating every song to the girls of Salem and Wake Forest. He butchered that Angel from Montgomery vocally, but also did in 2001 so no big deal. I know this is a stretch, but the tuning jam after Spotlight sounded a little but like Old Dirt Hill, 13 years earlier. Good to hear Spotlight too, Nancies and Jimi jams sounded great. Looking forward to the last few songs, looks like a killer close to the set
