well, i know i'm not supposed to do this, but based soley on those clips, i'm going to go ahead and say that this mix sounds crappy like fenway's was. way too many highs... dave's voice is too high in the mix, and everything sounds too spacious, as opposed to the warm full sound that we got on the bowa mixes

I just played the Typical which sounds really crisp to me. I like it.

yeah it's definitely crisp... just so much to me that it sounds sterile. i'm sure it's just me, i just always like a nice smooth rounded off sound in the mix where the bass and kickdrum warm the mix and the vocals blend with the instruments instead of just being thrown on top of the music so that it sounds unnatural

I'm waiting till I get the CD's but don't take too much stock away from listening to a 64kb stream on computer speakers...I'm sure it will sound much more full when you get the CD's or the lossless files. :)

i concur. they're all "liberal hippies" "save the earth" blah blah blah, yet they promote themselves on a site that's owned by the same corporation that owns fox news. you think they'd boycott myspace.

timh.

It's a streaming file off myspace. I'll wait until we have something a bit better quality.

yeah, i was contemplating witholding judgement since it's a 'low quality file' but i did that with fenway when my initial reaction was 'holy crap this mix sounds really bad' so i waited for the actual release hoping it would be better, and then low and behold, the mix sounded just like it did on the myspace stream... fool me once, fool me twice, fool me fuck this mix

oh and, a higher quality file isnt going to remix the instruments, put in more low, and eq dave's voice properly...
so again, i'm not witholding this time

actually, it does make a difference in levels. Haven't you ever heard an mp3 that the vocals were low due to the compression?

Per553
11-20-2006, 11:51 PM
it's gonna be a sick release, i'm just hoping the fact that the band sounds so drowned has to do with the stream quality....

timh.
11-20-2006, 11:53 PM
actually, it does make a difference in levels. Haven't you ever heard an mp3 that the vocals were low due to the compression?

yeah, but i'm not saying vocals are low... they're too sharp and eq'ed poorly.

and dont misunderstand me, i hope i'm wrong, i hope i'm completely wrong and this mix sounds like the bowa mix. and i realize that these files are not cd quality and there will be a difference, but the difference seems to be more of just clarity rather than a difference that miraculously fixes the mix.

100% correct. The myspace stream is a nice teaser, but you don't get the same sound that you get with the CD. Someone else mentioned LT3 sounded like crap, too. LT3 is really good as CD or lossless.

The other thing is who knows what kind of shape the raw recording was in...

I'm no expert, maybe one of the tapers, Crumbo, Shambro, etc could give more insight to some of the details of this subject.

Every recording the crew captures is going to be different. There are many factors that affect how the raw recording will come out. There is not one set way recordings come out and then it's mixed and mastered. Hence on LT2; Roi's solo on Hello Again. A lot of people were all pissed about that his solo was "turned down". It was a technical problem that was later affirmed by the road crew post release. These problems do come up...the odds might even be higher for problems when you have 10 musicians on stage like on 12/31/96. Ten years later, the road crew's gear is probably about 100x better now as well.

And your playback system is going to make a HUGE difference. That said, doesn't matter how good your system is- a 64kb streaming mp3 is going to sound like shit on anything.

i thought the bowa stream from myspace was terrible...then i listened to the disc...and well we all know how sweet that was. this will be a nice album to have no matter what the sound is like....hell any SBD will be better than the AUD we have available. good to be pumped up over a release. and it was 96 ... im sure they had to wrk some magic to get the sound quality up to current standards.

thanks for the offer, but YSI is also blocked, I swear half the net is blocked,

what really sucks is that I'll have to wait until Feb to hear LT7 I'm preordering but there is no way I'll have my wife mail it to me, I'm still missing a box with contacts in it that was mailed 6 weeks ago.

They had a truck outside and an engineer (Dan Healy) to mix the show and probably took extra measures on top of that (dmb1995-08-15.txt (http://www.geocities.com/chris_83_01/dmb1995-08-15.txt))

I converted the 2.21.94 Typical Situation in 64 bps to see the difference between that and a 192 bps and the difference is huge. That was lossy to lossy and it was still bad, just think if lossy to lossless was compared.

The only thing this clip on myspace should be used for is a guide.
