They definitely take some getting used to. They're very Irish sounding and have that Keltic feel to them. Just give the second track on the album (too long to type it out) another listen. I didn't get them at first but then it finally clicked.

I also felt the same way about Neutral Milk Hotel at first. After my first listen I thought :wtf But now I love them too.

I agree with the Nirvana comments here. They caught lightning in a bottle with Nevermind. In Utero came out and it just wasn't really that good (critically and mass appeal). Then his death re-sparked massive adulation and popularity again. Granted, Nevermind is really good, but Bleach (before it) and In Utero (after) were not.

Pearl Jam had really emerged by this time as the far superior band in most ways you can measure it.

Hrm... I've never tried to write it out...
First off your statments are entirely subjective i.e. "written everything", or "..Greatest albums ever". While this may be universally (for the most part) agreed upon, it is entirely subjective.

I've listened to most of their albums and nothing really lept out at me.. i can somewhat understand how it may have been a milestone in previous generations, but not mine (i'm 24). sure, some good songs and all, but for the most part its nothing amazing. Nothing made me want to dig into the album.
I dunno.. it's kinda the same thing as nirvana.. people are rabid fans and, it just doesnt make sense... Same with the beatles...

let the flaming begin

Wescoast
11-28-2006, 04:58 PM
well, when i say theyve written everything i mean songs that are often covered, on commercials, just out in everyday... seems like a 50% chance it was a lennon/mccartney song.

im not flaming, i was just curious.

but the beatles being the turning point isnt subjective. listen to pop music before help/rubber soul/revolver then after. they are responsible for pop music as its known today and has been since what? 65 or so.

regardless its cool you dont get them or like em, i was just curious as to why.

I dunno how i feel about them being "responsible for pop music". I can appreciate the view of that, and it's true, they were present during a massive turning point in music history. Whether or not they caused it is questionable. For sure they were a catalyst.. but yeah.. iono. I just never understood the crazed obsession.

their music was basically the same 4-8 bars of 'music' repeated for around 15 minutes. At least thats what it felt like at the show. Plus the guy with the microphone just runs around stage with it, but doesnt sing...just makes wierd noises. Either way my friends and i thought it was awful

Love the Decemberists.

I don't get the love for a lot of Indie bands, especially stuff like Destroyer. Yech. Or pretty much any band where the singer truly can't fuckin' sing (regardless of how many indie dorks try to convince me otherwise). I still like some indie bands though, like Broken Social Scene, Stars, and Arcade Fire.

That's another good one for me, too. When I said that I dislike his stuff on ufck, I got a ton of shit for it, and then a bunch of people decided I just hadn't heard enough, so they hooked me up with albums, compilations, all kinds of stuff...and I listened to it all. And I still don't get it, at all. The people who had hooked me up were all shocked, and some I think got offended. I was appreciative for the hook-ups, but yeah, I just don't get the love for his stuff at all.

I saw the Peppers twice in Philly in October. I love The Mars Volta albums and have I think every one but one in my iTunes. So I went to the first show optimistic. I think the problem has to do with the mix. It was atrocious, and was probably the muddiest mix I've ever heard. No instrument came threw clearly, and it all bounced off the arena walls. Someone has to sit them down out in the audience and let them listen to how they are coming off. It's definately not doing them any justice. BTW, the second night I avoided the hell out of their opening set I wish they lived up to the album hype.

Strugz10
11-29-2006, 02:48 PM
Mars Volta was absolutely incredible at Vegoose.

I don't know how different their sets could have been for RHCP, but everyone I was with at Vegoose was amazed by them as well. I hadn't even heard of them before we saw their set.

Amputechture is a great fucking album and I would recommend it to anyone that likes that kind of music. When people ask me how they sound I just say "they're a clusterfuck of sounds that somehow sound amazing together."

SteadySmokin03
11-29-2006, 03:57 PM
Well, I guess I am the first to mention Wilco (gasp) . . . I have both YHF and AGIB, largely due to what people on ufck had to say about them, and I absolutely just dont get what is suppossed to be so groundbreaking about them. I simply can not listen to these cd's, dare I say they are even boring, and I have tried on numerous occasions to sit down and listen to the whole cd but just can't do it. Tweedy seems to be revered as a genuis of sorts, and he may be, but I simply don't like the music.

I tell my friends that and they're like "It's not about his voice, he knows it's terrible! It's his lyrics that are great!"

So, if his voice sucks, and his guitar work certainly isn't anything special, aren't his lyrics the only thing to lean on?

Well, if they are, he's a one-trick pony (as a lyricist) because 75% of the songs I've heard by him are about how X, Y and Z are so tragic in his life. The guy is like the poet that could never find it in himself to write something beautiful about a picturesque, warm, mid-summer day.

I've come to the conclusion that I can learn to enjoy just about any type of music. By completely accepting the arrangement of notes that are there as they, not comparing them to other artists, my mind can organize them and make sense of it fairly objectively. By learning how fans of the music relate to the music I begin to understand, and sometimes expereince, the emotional aspects of the music. To me, these are two factors which contribute greatly to 'getting it'. The point i'm trying to drive home is that there is something in every music whether you see it at first or not.

Not really sure if this fits in this thread completely, but i'm going to post it anyways.

The Flaming Lips - all smoke and mirrors. their music is quite bland. can't believe i made it through their bonnaroo set in 07. giant balloons and people dressed as aliens on stage do not make poor music good.

The Rolling Stones - I have enjoyed listening to Sticky Fingers, but for the most part, their songs are really quite uninspiring... perfect 12bar blues pseudo jam bar band music. I don't get the appeal.

There's lots of bands I "get" (as in I understand why people love them), but I just don't like myself. I'm leaving out all the Nickelbacks and Fallout Boys of our time from my list, because I understand they have pop appeal and simplistic catchiness. I also assume they will never go down in history as great bands, so I'm just ignoring the whole radio top 40 garbage in general. But these are bands people RAVE about (people who I've met and know and respect their taste) and I just don't get what all the fuss is about:

Wilco
Rod Stewart
Peter Frampton
Tokyo Police Club
Sonic Youth
The Flaming Lips
Bruce Springsteen
Pavement
Death From Above 1979
The Shins

Cold Play
Kanye West
Panic At The Disco
The Fray
Dashboard Confessional
coheed and cambria
OAR
Bon Jovi
With exception of a few songs...Sublime
3-6 Mafia
Tupac
System of A Down
311
WSP
Sigur Ros

Any post-Nirvana "grunge/alternative" band (ex. Lifehouse, Nickleback..etc.) that is produced by Americans (I say this because American style production is not cohesive in a mainstream sense while most European productions follow a cohesive "performance" style that leaves a little rawness in the mix (ie. Coldplay, Radiohead, etc.)

good question. my only guess would be in the popular/mass appeal that bands like phish have in the jam band community. thats really the only 1st tier jam band i can think of.

i never get why so many people get hang up's about vocalists. most of my favorite bands have weird or just downright shitty singers. Pumpkins, R.E.M., Hold Steady, Soul Coughing, etc. i love a weird voice.

I kind of agree with Black Keys, to a degree. Not to say I dislike them, but on paper I should like them a lot better than I do.

The Eagles
Guns n Roses
Sublime
Bob Marley
Bon Jovi
Phish
The Doors

A bunch of others, I'm sure, but that's offhand.

Kings Of Leon have been bad for a long time, no shame in not liking them. Muse is just really annoying for the most part. i like a few of their songs though

i can't say The Doors or The Eagles, because it goes beyond "not getting them". i genuinely think they suck and are just not good bands.

When they were on SNL I wanted to throw something at the TV during their "performance". I don't care for Pumped Up Kicks at all, but seeing them perform it amplified my distate by a factor of 100. That's a band that's trying way to hard to be hip.
