Its also about 8-10 minutes live, which isn't to say that they won't play it. They've played One Big Holiday and Anytime on Conan already and Gideon on Letterman. I'd have to go with Gideon for Conan this time, although something random like What A Wonderful Man would make sense too.

I started with It Still Moves but that was a couple years ago before Z was out. The two albums are very different. I saw them open for DMB on the Vote for Change tour and got hooked. Saw them in Boston on Saturday.. awesome show. They had some horns play with them for a couple songs in the encore which was really cool.

Awesome show dude. All Night Long and Careless Whisper crack me up each time I hear them. I love how the band just doesn't seem to take themselves seriously. They never disappoint at big shows like this. I wish I could say the same about some some other bands that this message board may or may not have been formed because of...

Also, if anyone is interested, there's a lossless Sirius capture of the show that can be found here (along with m4a's of the show as well):

saw this in the Denver Post today and thought the review was hilarious:

My Morning Jacket
If the Jan. 12 show at the Ogden Theatre was not oversold, it certainly felt that way. It was the first of two local performances by the Louisville indie-jam band My Morning Jacket, and the audience's composition shows how far it has come.

The band has lately sounded like a Southern-fried hippie act, veering from its recorded versions into long, self-indulgent guitar solos. Granted, it's not jam rock per se - eschewing jazzy chords and ridiculous tangents - but it felt more frat-party-oriented than Built to Spill, Band of Horses or other similar outfits.

The show was so packed with drunken, backward-baseball-cap types screaming over the music that my girlfriend and I could only endure a few songs. "Off the Record," for example, sounded great with its clipped reggae beats and Jim James' high, clear voice, and "What a Wonderful Man" was tighter than a corset. But fighting through hordes of jocks oblivious to the music was tiresome. |John Wenzel

Sad, but very true. With increased fame comes a lot of really shitty people in the crowd. Being on a DMB board, we know that very well. Even in 2005, the crowd at MMJ shows wasn't too bad. They've really taken off within the last year though, and they seem to be a band that people in college like because of their persona, not their actual music (like DMB). We can only hope that MMJ doesn't go the way of DMB in terms of compromising their musical integrity by writing and releasing junk. I have some faith in MMJ though. "Z" was a little poppier than anything previously released, so hopefully it doesn't go too far beyond that.

Its fairly rare. Usually during the end of a longer tour, his voice is a little shakey (as is the case with most vocalists). I haven't litened to the show in a while, so I couldn't tell you if that was the only song.

good to see people getting into this band... to get a crash course in how the band sounds right now, check out Okonokos 2CD live set (or get the DVD, which is just sick). the bonus DVD with the "acoustic" performances is fantastic as well if you can get your hands on it. im sure some of the vids are on youtube.

in terms of studio albums, you might as well start at the beginning and get Tennessee Fire and then At Dawn.
It Still Moves is an awesome record to get if you want to hear the band stretch out. Z is much tighter, a little more sonically diverse.

love these guys, and can't wait for the new record!

My initial take on the new Jim James record (Regions of Light and Sound of God):

I had listened to it, while distracted, on the preview that NPR rolled out last week, but it wasn't until this morning on the way to work, after buying it last night, that I actually LISTENED to it, only made it through the first 4 tracks on the way in though.

There's not much to complain about with it. He's a master at making simple beats feel hypnotic with the nuances of each track. Each rhythm section derives out of different synth sounds, turning the most basic ideas into groovy head-nodding tunes.

Its simple, but its not. I've never wanted to sing the vowel sounds(A-E-I-O-U) aloud like I do in the first track. So far "Dear One" stands out for me in the first half of the album. And "A New Life" is like his solo continuation of "Slow Slow Tune" from Circuital, could easily be a 2nd movement to the song.

My initial take on the new Jim James record (Regions of Light and Sound of God):

There's not much to complain about with it. He's a master at making simple beats feel hypnotic with the nuances of each track. Each rhythm section derives out of different synth sounds, turning the most basic ideas into groovy head-nodding tunes.

Its simple, but its not. I've never wanted to sing the vowel sounds(A-E-I-O-U) aloud like I do in the first track. So far "Dear One" stands out for me in the first half of the album. And "A New Life" is like his solo continuation of "Slow Slow Tune" from Circuital, could easily be a 2nd movement to the song.

:upyours Agreed.

MMJ on Fallon this Friday, 10/11.

Ready for these guys to get some shit moving again. Kinda hope this is a sneak peak at some new stuff as this isn't a Jim James solo appearance...

They've been in the studio for a little bit, so maybe it IS a sneak peak?

In setting my DVR to record this performance tonight... I saw the episode description as this:

"...a special performance by My Morning Jacket, featuring Brittany Howard, the singer of the Alabama Shakes and Merrill Garbus from Tune-Yards."

Now I'm REALLY interested :upyours

edit: From the Alabama Shakes website:

Brittany will join My Morning Jacket and Merrill Garbus of tune-yards on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon next Friday October 11!

They’ll perform the Fela Kuti song “Trouble Sleep Yanga Wake Am,” which they recorded for the Red Hot + Fela collection that comes out next week on Knitting Factory Records!

You can listen to the full record including “Trouble Sleep” here at NPR (http://www.npr.org/2013/09/29/226165955/first-listen-red-hot-fela), and be sure to tune in next Friday night at 12:35 PM ET/11:35 CT!

Listening to Evil Urges for the first time in a good while this morning...

Reminded of the first time I ever heard "I'm Amazed"... that guitar solo had me begging for more and it still does to this day.

edit: and oh by the way, I highly recommend their holiday iTunes sessiom from 2011

Until that happens, this new live archival series they're rolling out seems promising...

Hey ggies,

Thanks for lookin' out brotha. :upyours

Also, if the single from the Dallas Buyers Club soundtrack, Ready To Be Called On, is any indication of the direction they are moving... I'm pretty pumped.

Also check out their cover of The Byrd's Turn Turn Turn on the True Blood Season 4 soundtrack.

New album out May 4, here is the new single. I like it, but I don't follow the band close enough to know if it's a good progression for them or not.

Evil Urges is a damn fine album and the one that really got me into them. That being said, I've kinda lost track of them not for any particular reason. "Highly Suspicious" is such an awesomely hilarious tune, but I really like it! :lol

Should be a good one. Same producer as the Circuital album, which I enjoyed.

Since discovering them, I've been more a fan of their older stuff, namely Z and It Still Moves. They manage to pique my interest in just about every effort they've put forward, however that may be seen to a bigger die-hard as far as their evolution in sound.

Their live stuff is REALLY good. Listened to their shows from 'One Big Holiday' 3-night run in 2014, solid. Jim's vocals are consistently impressive in the live setting. Even had Bob Weir guest on some great Dead covers...

I love Tropics.

This album flows like many of their others. Good front half of the album, but the back half, which kicks off with their single and then Tropics to follow, is great.

Not those, but hitting up our local show on the 24th, I think the tour closer(?)

Can't wait. Planned on having to sell our tickets on account of my wife being due to give birth this past week, but our daughter did us a favor and arrived early, so we're expecting to make it after all....

The setlists look pretty stellar from this tour.

Well, I bought reserved seats relatively close, many many moons ago from MMJ's Ground Control. The box office seemed to have not known what that was all about, so they screwed up my tickets.

BUT, they made it right by giving us pit upgrades. The wife's first time on a rail at a show. Pretty good first night out together since the squid was born.

Was really pleased with the set. These guys bring it nightly.
