holy mother of god. i don't tend to start threads about one particular performance of a particular song, but there could not be a more perfect performance of YNK. everyone is absolutely spot on, dave's voice sounds great, no lyrical flubs, gah! it's been essentially the only thing i listen to when i'm in the car for the past 2 months.

p.s. there will never be another one as good, because after 03 Boyd started playing a different part in the pre-chorus that really bothers me. his old part broke up the chord transitions really nicely, but now he just mimics dave/stefan/butch and it's overkill. i <3 ynk.

there was just no reason for him to change it. it'd be like if he changed his classic Ants verse riff to the bass/guitar line. do you think he forgot what he usually played during the year off or something? meh.

Honestly, I'd guess he just wanted to "mix it up." We always talk about how we want the band to do that more, but most of the time now, when they do, we complain about it...

...which is usually justified. In this case, I think it totally is, I completely agree with you, so I'm not bustin' balls. However, I also think it's funny that this community almost constantly has two themes running through it...
1. How we wish they would mix stuff up more.
2. How we hate all their changes.

Again, I'm not saying this is "wrong" or "stupid," because I understand that we want them to mix it up, but to do so WELL! It's just funny to me.

the way i see it, there are some things that absolutely have to be in each song, and then massive areas for fluidity. Ants has to have the "ants riff," #41 has to have the "da-na-na-na-naaa-na" boyd/roi riff in the pre-chorus, R&R has to have the eerie boyd/roi interplay after the choruses, etc. but if they wanted to let roi do the Ants solo, or go back to the #41 reggae outro, or add a breakdown in the middle of R&R, that would be great. i wouldn't say that boyd's YNK part is on the same "iconic" level as the others, but what he changed it to is just generic and simple. honestly the more i think about it, i don't think any changes to ('03) YNK would be justifiable, except maybe i could do without carter's intro.

This is a great performance of this song, i'm definately glad it was released, because the other 2 performances are horrible compared to this (9.11.05 and 9.6.02)

It just seemed to always get a lot of praise at ufck and now here. Putting aside my personal feelings of not caring for the song, I think there's quite a few songs that deserve more praise than this one.

And this song is not the slightest bit overrated. He wrote a song in stream of consciousness from the point of view of an infant. That is just brilliant.

it's brilliant in its own way. dave was also channeling an infant when he wrote it, but did it in less of a "stream of consciousness of an infant" manner and more of a "writing level of an infant" manner

nothing gets me like this version does. right when roi busts into his solo and stefan starts ripping, and then the crowd erupts 3 or 4 seconds later when it all hits them... just incredible. and roi's solo could not be more perfect

I was there, and it seems to me that the crowd noise is accurate.

But, the tapes could prove that wrong. Maybe I think I remember it that way because I've listened to this version so many times now from the CP Bonus.
