Just browsing through sets, came across the Hartford 2003 shows,

damn, were these shows as bad in person as they are on paper??
being that 2003 had a pretty nice chunk of sets and shows, this must have been a major letdown.
check out this run:
Digging a Ditch
Fool To Think
I Did It
If I Had It All

yikes

:lol I was at 8/30, and yes, it was bad. Of course, my opinion of the actual performance is tainted because I was on the lawn being pushed and trampled by mobs of drunk idiots who wouldn't shut up. I remember the highlight of the show being the Song That Jane Likes / Bartender combo, and DDTW, Crush and Ants being pretty good too. The rest of the time I couldn't really see anything, or hear too well. The song selection wasn't horrible, but it was nothing special. Without a doubt the worst venue and crowd I've ever experienced (I've been to Darien Lake twice, and that's even way better in both respects, IMO). Out of 35+ shows, this is still my worst showgoing experience ever. And I was at 8/5/03 (look at that setlist).

i can not remember walking out feeling as worse as I did those two nights

hartford is known for its colorful experiences... at least no cars got set on fire that year.

Heh, true, but before that year it was also known as a place to see some reliably great shows too.

:lol what a thread title

yep. the worst two shows i've been to and one of the worst weekends everrrr.

it's worth it to note that the two step on N2 was short. right at the beginning of what would have been the jam, dave went back to carter and made a sign with his hand as if he was measuring something and then shortened it really quickly. lame.

and then the weird recently with a weird non-bluegrass jam. just a strange weekend all around.

it's worse knowing that about a week later in september the band all of a sudden exploded and was putting on AMAZING shows.

Those were the two worst shows I've been to at the Meadows. They had no energy at all it seemed. Even '01 was better.. great Grey St. and Krasno sitting in on Jimi and Angel was very good.

I remember being real pumped. Had some nice seats, standing there waiting for the shows to start, and we got a perfect glimpse of how the weekend would pan out with those opening notes of WTWE. By far the worse opener I've ever witnessed. Don't Drink was actually the only song that night that I thought sounded great. I distinctly remember Dave completely stop playing the Instro to One Sweet, I don't know if that was standard for '03 but, it was notable. I mean everything just sucked. And to make the encore worse, Dave broke a string during Billies. The worst show I've ever seen.

You could argue that Hartford got the show of the year each year from '99-'02, or at least a top 3 show each of those years.

Hard to believe those shows could be so bad after such a stellar 8/25, although 8/24 sucked too

that said, the two shows in 2004 at hartford were two of the most enjoyable shows i've been to. sets weren't amazing or anything, it was just a really freaking awesome time.

Likewise with Great Woods that year too.

(Hmm... maybe it does have to do with the shows being freakin' good. :upyours)

Hartford pavilion treated me fine both times I was there ('01 and '02). Good crowds, good shows. The stories from the lawn though were always good for a laugh. :lol

4 good performances out of those two shows, that's it. I remember during Pig, when Boyd started playing Dave was shaking his head with a real pissed off look. Carter wasn't smiling at all. The band was just not in a good mood that weekend.

Some people attribute the bad vibe through rumors of it being the weekend Dave announced to the band that he was gonna tour with D&F's. Who knows if that's even true or not, but the fact remains that those two shows suffered greatly due to some really bad vibes going on.

Yes, one of my favorite transitions from the bridge that summer. I also enjoyed the Recently in the encore. I have the setlist from that show (the one that appears on the almanac), but definitely not one of the better shows overall I have seen.

I was at both these shows as well and remember thinking something was definitely wrong. Right after that terrible 4 song run they closed the set with like an 8-9 minute Two Step.. not exactly normal. It's strange b/c I was at the two SPAC shows before the Meadows and they were quite enjoyable.

these two shows were the direct cause of me missing the entire 04 tour.

I went to central park and some dave and friends shows later in 03, but dmb was basically dead to me for a year after these sets.

Yeah, I was at the second night of SPAC as well and that show was so much better.

It's funny, that Hartford weekend was so horrible yet the very next show started one of the finest months from DMB, Sept. '03.

Hartford '03 was the worst bunch of shows I've seen. Not only did the shows suck, but the crowd was terrible and I got stuck in the dirtiest hotel in all of Hartford. I was so pissed off after those two shows that I was going to sell my Camden tickets. Luckily I didn't, since the Camden shows were excellent and Central Park after that was all sorts of awesome. I dunno what happened. It seems like they just weren't into it at all.

i listen to this show probably as much as anyone, but alot of that is having the webcast version.. i think its a great show, but is it considered so good because of the webcast or is it really that good. it was certainly that good at that point in the tour, but then 3 days later at spac they played the show that took the tour to a new level and the remainder of that tour is outstanding.

But the same question would go for 7/29. Would that be considered as good had Naylor not recorded one of the finest audio pulls up at that point? I think we've already gone over the 7/26 vs. 7/29 debate a few times though.

this isnt actually a 7.26 vs 7.29 debate im just saying that i think the whole next month is actually so much more amazing, that i wonder if 7/26 stands out because of the webcast.

solid, absolutely, amazing, yes

but best of the tour?

i think the date stands out because of the webcast.. i think people remember that show because of the webcast, i still think its an absolutely amazing show that i listen to fairly reguarly, but there are alot of stellar shows in the later part of that summer.

Nothing better than erupting when the band comes out on stage and noodles around, and the absolute ecstasy of then:
