So DMBand.com just posted the mp3s, not the FLACs yet?
I think the FLACs are up, but I bought and grabbed the 256kbps tonight cause someone on Ants knew how to get to those. I'd imagine if you're creative enough you could get to the FLACs too.

Paul McCandless (b. Indiana, Pennsylvania, United States, March 24, 1947) is an American jazz woodwind player and composer. He is one of few expert jazz oboists, and also plays English horn, various sizes of saxophone, and bass clarinet, among other instruments.

He has performed with the Paul Winter Consort and Oregon, and has been a guest musician with Béla Fleck and the Flecktones (appearing on the 2002 album Live at the Quick) and has toured with tabla artist Sandip Burman.

McCandless comes from a musical family. His father, also named Paul McCandless, was also an oboist and English hornist, and his grandfather also played the oboe.

In 1984 McCandless toured Europe with bassist Barre Phillips and German clarinetist Theo Jörgensmann..

A bit more deeper into the Paul thing, he had been playing with the Flecktones(Bela) off and on from about 1993 to 1996, around the time when the Flecktones were just a trio(Bela, Vic and Futureman). Then in late '96 Jeff Coffin sat in on a few Flecktones shows in Nashville, and then by March of '97, Jeff Coffin became an official member, and Paul's appearances with the 'Tones became less and less over the years since then.

just because the show itself is awsome doesnt mean you cant be logical... i mean what the fuck was this show from before stefan joined the band? no wait, it cant be, he's always been in the band... the dumbfuck who mixed this just decided to leave him out of the mix.

there is nothing that annoys me more that a ridgid sound that isnt rounded out by enough low end.

Just because he's not slappin' the fuck out of the bass like on LT 3 doesn't mean he isn't present in the mix...

slapping the fuck out of the bass has nothing to do with this mix...
it's the fact that low end, something that is meant to round out and warm the sound, is completely missing from this mix... and i'm listening on headphones... i can only imagine how distant the bass will be when i listen to it in my car

Well I'm fairly sure the roll off on the low end is due to the fact that it's a 1996 show, much like you get the same thing with LT4, RR '95 and even Halloween and Watchtower from the Recently EP (2/22/94). This sounds pretty damn good to me.

There are EASILY 5 songs from this show that are best released versions. I should just delete the Say Goodbye poll I already did. I had said in it that they hadn't released a truly Say Goodbye yet. Strike that comment.

and, listening to these old shows makes me resent butch even more... now i know a lot of you say he's great (and yes he is a great musician), but i think his presence imposes boundaries on what the music can do now... i know that there are designated solo areas and such, but the meat of the song is so locked down now that everything is predictable... little nuances that make songs unique are gone.

case and point: astb from this show. dave's little chordal thing isn't that same lame thing that's been going on for the past several years... since butch has learned that as the 'part' to the song and always plays along with daves parts now, this is just one more thing that will never change (not without an intentional practice and effort to do so anyway)

All right, I just finished listening all the way through, and overall, I don't have a problem with the recording. I think most of the tracks are mixed perfectly, but one thing that has bothered me is the mixing on Typical, which also happens to be the track I was looking the most forward to hearing on this release. Bela is turned down a lot lower than he should be and Paul sounds way too distant, especially in the jam where he really shines. I've listened to it a few times now, and I don't know, as crazy as it sounds, I think I like the AUD of this Typical better than this mix.

But like I said, other than that, everything else sounds great, especially that Crash. I would have no problem hearing this song at every show I went to if it sounded this perfect. Also having the first DMB / Flecktones #41 as an SBD is pretty great in itself as well :upyours

Things are predictable now more than they were back then but I think alot of that was just them not having played the songs 10000x like they have now. It's hard to mix things up on a song you've played so many times they should be sick to death of playing. I agree they should make the effort though and I think that's actually why they brought Ross on this summer. ASTB was changed up, not the way I'd like it to be but you can't deny this summer it was different.

I hate to break it to ya, but DMB's path was already laid down before Butch toured fully with the band in '00. Songs were already taking a slower pace. And I'm not sure I understand the theory of everything being locked down. If anything, Butch allowed more freedom for songs to grow. Had we not seen another band member join DMB like Butch you'd more than likely be throwing your arms in the air screaming how LIOG or Two Step have been the same since early '98. But...you don't see that, do you. There's a reason. There are different eras in this band, and from '00 on, we've seen solos, backings.

It's sad that people can't come up with a comprehensive reason why Butch hasn't been good for DMB other than a few backing notes that Dave used to play, or because Dave...DAVE wrote Steady As We Go...

Don't attribute great shows of past to the abscence of Butch, just attribute those great shows to the fact that...that's where DMB was at that point in their career.
