I hate to break it to ya, but DMB's path was already laid down before Butch toured fully with the band in '00. Songs were already taking a slower pace. And I'm not sure I understand the theory of everything being locked down. If anything, Butch allowed more freedom for songs to grow. Had we not seen another band member join DMB like Butch you'd more than likely be throwing your arms in the air screaming how LIOG or Two Step have been the same since early '98. But...you don't see that, do you. There's a reason. There are different eras in this band, and from '00 on, we've seen solos, backings.

It's sad that people can't come up with a comprehensive reason why Butch hasn't been good for DMB other than a few backing notes that Dave used to play, or because Dave...DAVE wrote Steady As We Go...

Don't attribute great shows of past to the abscence of Butch, just attribute those great shows to the fact that...that's where DMB was at that point in their career.butch thickens the music. as the band progressed and they played all the songs for the millionth time i think they really needed someone to move them on from the raw stage to the polished intense stage of a band of their caliber. butch takes them to another level in my opinion. even rashawn now. he's just another layer that enhances the band's core sound. and they are more than capable of making good new music with butch. see '04 and some of the '06 songs.

I was dreaming that I was young like tiny children
Under the table in my home I dreamt 'cause hours they took so long,
But lately the time is short the years they fly by,
And leaves me to worry maybe mine is done before I'm through yeah.

so i immediately bought it only thinking it was a real cd and would sound good....for $60 how wrong i was

the whole concert was converted """""""""so crappy"""""""""""" onto cd, it sounded like dmb underwater.....i was so pissed....but it was so good, i couldnt not listen

Agreed. Minarets as well. How do you feel about the mixing of Typical? I was surprised they didn't do as much as they could have with the jam, which for me at least, is the highlight of the show and was why I was anticipating hearing this song more than any other for this release.

I'm not sure I've ever heard a version I didn't think sounded amazing though so I'm biased on this one.

I really like how crisp Dave is and how he's obviously not just going through the motions on the song. On any song from this show actually. I'm not a musician but I took 8 years of vocal lessons so for me it's mostly (but obviously not always) going to come down to what Dave brings to the performance. If he's into the song and shows emotion, I'm going to love it.

man i forgot how good dmb was.

its funny, in 06 theyre better at some things then when they first started, like polishing off a jam and nailing it or picking up on age-old accents and parts in songs, but at the same time theyve become too comfortable

i enjoy their ability to take risks back in 96, like dave was just starting that whole warehouse intro thing, totally ad libbing most of say goodbye

i think he's so good at ad libbing nowadays, because he writes his melodies first and he has rhythm, so know matter what, he always knows the rhythm and the melody, as long as he can fit some words in there that might have something to do with the song.

i really enjoy the interplay between carter and dave, so much of it has been erased by carter accenting butch nowadays... and butch doubling daves part. theres something to be said about the emptiness of their songs with just the 5 of them up there and having to fill the void... it forced dave to play rhythm better and get more into it

done with disc 1, onto disc 2 :upyours

I also really like how on LIOG Bela starts off his solo teasing the chords he plays on "Off The Top (The Gravity Wheel)" and then works off of that. They work so well with this song it's no surprise he continued doing that for a lot of his solos after these run of shows.

yeah i'm not opposed to a '94 show but kind of distance myself from it because of all the sbd's we have. i just wonder if they would put one out considering that LT3 was the one when they first started recording with the multi-track (i don't know if that makes a difference or not).

even though we have a soundboard of 9.28.94, i would love one with less treble, what a great show

as far as livetrax 8 id like to see either 9.28.94 or 4.7.02

nice mix

or im always happy with a winter 98, or it would be nice to see the dead openers

9/28 will never EVER be released. Bagby used 60m DATs back then, which is why there is a large drop out in the encore of the patches. When the master stops, the clones stop. So all those shows from that time, 8/12, 8/13, 9/28 and so on and so on that have that drop can't be releases.

There's no way. They cut the Stefan solo out of Folsom and people were pissed. They're asking for a lot of unneeded trouble if they do that when they have 1000 other shows to release.

I don't really think it'd be a big deal, but with the laziness of mgmt, they are not likely to mess with something like that.

But this discussion doesn't matter because LT8 will be Vegas '07.

If not releasing a show because of a one minute drop out gets blamed on laziness, then you're really just picking on them an unreasonable amount. It would be a big deal. Especially when the clone we listen to is the exact same thing they start with. EXACT What purpose would it serve to release a show that contains less music of the show than you have and doesn't even really sound better because there are no channels to mix, just a full .wav to EQ? You can do that yourself in WMP. It makes no sense.

a lot of people forget (or just don't know) that stefan was very laid back in DMB until the start of the 98 tour.. a couple of the reviews from 4.23.98 talk about how stefan both was turned up and how he even stepped up.

a review of videos from pre-98 confirms that stefan was much more passive in the bands early days.

I'm sure this reflected in his playing on this LT release and the amount of care given to make sure his mix was correctly preserved..

Listen to ASTB? from this show then listen to a taper version of one from the past several years....there is a VERY noticible difference in Stefan's playing.

correct - Coffin isn't in the picture at this time. the Flecktones are: Bela, Vic, Future, Paul

Well when he is dueling he is playing by himself with no other instruments playing so it is really unfair to compare it to Typical.

In the parts in Typical where he sounds distant he is competing against everybody else doing there own solo's and jamming away so he is kind of overwhelmed and he sounds distant. Listen to the Aud...

It's really too bad he wasn't able to guest with the band more given how quickly he adjusted to the songs in just those three shows he played with them. Seriously though, that minarets is so heavy/full - roi and mcCandles at the end is absurd.

Quick question though... this was only the third show bela+tones played with dmb on??

And with that in mind, why are bela's additions to songs like liog, twostep etc. so much better back then than they are nowadays (when happens to randomly show up - Randells). I know rust might be involved, but its not like the jams are jumping around much - basically just straight forward, carter driven key jams...

Anyways, minarets is tops right now for me on this release...

and is that really roi on the flute/whistle the entire time...?? because one of the solos (saygoodbye or 41 - can't remember) is almost too good so I'm guessing its McCandles

Actually that's not entirely true. I send packages out all the time and sometimes they deliver early. Fedex won't but UPS will on occasion.

Hmmm.... I have never seen that happen in all the packages my company has sent. Weird.

Not to turn this into a ups thread...:lol But if you wanted to send a package to your next door neighbor and wanted them to get it the quickest, the best way to send it would be ground. If you sent it 1 day you would pay through the nose and they would only get it a few hours earlier. Their package would leave your house, go via air to the distribution center in Texas, and be delivered to them by 10:30 the next day. That's right, they actually ship that package to Texas for no apparent reason... :screwy

So after listening to it again, I will no longer accept any answer to "what's the best track they've released" that isn't "Typical Situation - 12.31.96". That's it. Case closed.

I just listened to it for probably the 10th time and it just keeps getting better... Amazing version.

DMB + Bela and the Flecktones really was just the perfect combination.

Still is. There will never be a better union on stage with DMB than with the Flecktones.

And I gotta disagree about Paul with the 'Tones being greater than Jeff.

why on earth did they put the "it's not a typical situation in here tonight," on there twice? He only said that once, if my memory serves.

because he says it after Minarets, which ends Disc 2...but as he's saying it, he's starting to play the opening notes to Typical.

Typical begins Disc 3 and they wanted to use the full song...so you hear Dave saying that line as the song begins

i actually like it - Disc 2 ends and then Disc 3 starts immediately with the last thing you heard on Disc 2. if you don't listen to the actual CD version of the release, it sounds weird though

Jeff could tear typical up so much it's not even funny. I'm surprised he's never guested on it before. I love Jeff, I find his additions to be more energetic than Paul's. However, Paul on this release is more based on fills, whereas Jeff is usually based on solos.

One thing I will say about listening to this is that it's reminded me how much I want the flute back on Typical.

Oh, and Paul fits in on this WAY more than Jeff would.
Paul on Crash is great. Jeff on Crash would be horribly out of place.

I don't like AT ALL that they split the discs there. They should have split before #41 to keep the flow going through there. Or even split before Billies, and have all of set 2 + encore on disc 3.

Quick question though... this was only the third show bela+tones played with dmb on??

FIRST show for Vic and Futureman.
3rd for Paul, 4th for Bela.

Do they identify the different instruments Paul uses on his solos? I know in the past when I've heard this show, it's hard to tell if he's using a soprano sax or a sopranino sax, which is smaller and higher pitched. And does he use any of his other horns, like an oboe, or a pennywhistle?

As far as I can hear/remember, it's all just regular soprano.
When Paul comes out after Two Step, Dave introduces him as playing a sopranino, then corrects himself and just says soprano.

To Whom It May Concern,

I just noticed that my Oink account has been deleted due to inactivity (one of the many downfalls of being deployed). I was wondering if there is a soul kind enough to offer up an invite for me? Maybe as an early Christmas present? Pwetty pwease? :) I'd be forever grateful and massage your e-ego at every opportunity. I really want to check out the 12.31.96 release but am too damn impatient to wait until tomorrow evening. Plus my laptop is being packed up tomorrow and I'd like to import the tracks into iTunes before then. Thanks.

Respectfully Yours and Yours Only,

You do realize giving a member of Oink who has had his/her account deleted an invite, will be an automatic deletion of your account as well as the invite.

Relax, it wasn't deleted because I violated the terms of service. I just didn't login for an extended period of time. The account might just be suspended for all I know, I just said deleted because I really don't know what's going on.

See, Jeff doesn't need to fit in because he isn't really driven by fills. He'd rip the Typical jam a new one, IMO better than McCandless
