Oh, it's been discussed. Heh.

I doubt it's a screw up. What's most likely is that whichever track McCandless was on in their recording had someone else on it that would have gotten jacked up way too far if they turned it up. It's too bad he's so low, but it's how it is, and it's still sick to have.

It's one of those things that we're just going to have to be ok with if we want certain specific shows. Not every recording they have is pristine and flawless.

Yea. Which brings to mind the fact that I'd be totally content with a '94 show that had a dropout on it if it was that good of a show. Take the good with the bad sometimes.

You know, it's still amazing that certain shows that we've been discussing for years and begging for a release finally saw their day. 12/8/98, 12/31/96, maybe someday we'll see the Dead Openers on that list.

My current 12/31/96 obsession: LIOG

Even though 6/8/97 is the golden standard, not only for Bela's solos, but for ANY guest, I've been listening the hell out of this version.

i would have no objection to any of these we have discussed being released... honestly though, id rather have a 2002 show next or 97, and would prefer a summer show to a winter show.

the only winter shows besides the finally released 12.31.96 i ever need to see released are the 98 shows... or maybe 2000.

I would take 12/21/02 in a heartbeat. It's a classic show for many reasons, but since it was one of the most discussed shows among DMB fans, it gets that stigma of being "overrated" which is one of the most overly used terms on these boards.

I wouldn't disagree with this. But that just goes to show you how incredible '02 was to have other shows being steps above that 12/21/02 performance.

And on a sidenote, this is still a huge deal to have this release of 12/31/96. For many of you, you'll remember being on these boards for YEARS and how many countless posts and threads have seen(read) that talked about this show and how it should be released someday.

The good audio pull argument for official releases is something I agree with to an extent. I mean, for a good portion of fans we don't really need a great pull like 7/29/02 released, BUT on the same token, there are a ton of fans who don't have the show so they wouldn't know.

Eh, theve clearly looked into those older shows. And the WH dics show that some of them can sound beautiful. I shit on managements decisions just as much as the next guy, but while we won't be getting more than we can handle I'd be very surprised if we don't get a pre-95 release within the next few years.

Plus, to name a whole series after a venue and then to never release a show from that venue (especially considering what Trax means to DMB's history) would just be straight up stupid.

the tape flip on that Seek Up is heartbreaking.

Between that and the utterly filthy versions of Jane, #36, and Minarets, I'd thoroughly enjoy that release. One of the last regular club shows too.

Listened to this again a few days ago. This release is money from start to finish. Not a dud in the bunch. The Minarets, Typical, and pre-Ants Improv are fantastic. We take the Sojourn interpolation for granted now, but listening to it happen for the first time again, inspirational stuff from Bela.

I only have one problem with this release. I remember when it was announced someone was bitching about the way they tracked discs 2 and 3 and thinking the guy was crazy. But listening to this again I was thinking, "shit, that guy was right." Breaking Disc 2 and 3 between Minarets and Typical was a mistake. Disc 3 should have started with the full Flecktones introduction from Dave right before #41.

I'm old school, I love Stand Up. I don't want to see any of it live, really, but I love the album. It's not unheard of. In Through the Out Door is further away from Zeppelin I in both sound and quality than Stand Up is to Under the Table. I love them both. It's nothing that absurd.

the d+t versions of old dirt hill arent too different from the album version with the exception of the outro and carter's beat. dave really doesnt do anything out of the ordinary it just isnt covered up by that awful drum beat.

I get the comparison you're making but I think you're comparing apples to oranges. In Through the Out Door was a result of the music industry shifting and Zeppelin trying to fit in, whereas Stand Up was a result of scrapping other songs and trying to go and do something different with a new producer.

DMB will never have the critical acclaim and limelight that Zeppelin had. DMB can put out whatever they want and for the most part people will buy into it regardless of the media or how it sounds. DMB is lucky to have the grassroots following that it does and doesn't have to worry about getting songs on the charts or selling records (as much RCA wants them to) like Zeppelin did IMO.

If you're looking for atypical sit ins, check out the Tones on Jimi from 9/13/00. Underrated. I think there's a Bartender from Sep. '00 where they all sat in as well that I've always wanted to hear.

Nah. The Flecktones are the type of musicians that can be asked to join in on a song they never heard before 5 minutes before its played. That's what happened with Jeff Coffin in Atlanta back in '06. Roi came into the 'Tones dressing room and asked Jeff to sit in on the new tunes (Break Free and Idea Of You) right before the show started and Jeff hadn't heard a single note from either song at that point. And even though it had been a long time since, Bela has played on Seek Up before.

Tex (DMBTEX10101) has a little project going with his Flecktone site and compiled songs with the Flecktones guesting each year with DMB. Not every show is up there but most are.

how fucking amazing was it?

It was my third DMB show. A year prior, the first show I went to, I wasn't really into them all that much. I just remember wandering around the coliseum wanting to hear their singles (WWYS, Ants, etc.). I do remember Bruce Hornsby coming out which did pull me in a little more. I guess I was considered a "teeny bopper" fan at that time. The friends I was with were much bigger fans than me. They remember seeing them locally at small gigs like Strawberry Banks and Town Pointe Park. So they decided to bring me along. Then the band released Crash. I caught them again in June 1996 in Virginia Beach not long after the amphitheater first opened. This is about the time when something awoke in me. I was more of a casual listener up to this point. But now I was finding that I couldn't get enough of the band's music. So by the time NYE '96 rolled around my DMB fandom was in full fruition. My senses were peaked and I was in total receive mode wanting to take it all in. The whole experience was quite memorable. I remember every single thing about it, from staying at my friend's house the night prior, to making the drive to the coliseum, to standing outside in the freezing cold before we were let in, to everyone somewhat casually making their way to the foot of the stage and taking a seat on the ground after the doors were opened. This was a point in the band's career where they hadn't reached full superstar status quite yet. Even though it was a general admission show I don't remember tons of people bum rushing the stage when the doors were opened. Plenty of people were making their way into the mezzanine to take a seat. Of course that scenario changed as the night progressed. This was first time I had ever heard The Flecktones' music. I was entranced by the journey it took me on. I didn't really know exactly what it was I was listening to but I knew it was something special. A couple days later I immediately ran out and purchased their Live Art release. Then of course the band made this night unique. Dave in a tux, the laser lights, falling balloons, Baby New Year dropping down from the ceiling. Unlike the previous year I was listening more intently now to what they were playing. At the time I had no idea the magnitude of importance that evening held. I certainly didn't think that years later it would be considered by many their greatest performance ever. But deep down inside it held a lasting impression on me because the first B&P I ever requested was that show. Not my first or second show but that show. What happened that night definitely was a turning point for my obsession with the band. It truly demonstrated to me the pure magic they could create onstage.

Moses
02-16-2009, 02:02 AM

I've heard of some sellers doing that shit because it makes the ones that are overpriced by 10-15 bucks seem insanely reasonable.

It was a guy dressed up as Baby New Year. After the countdown clock struck zero he was lowered down onto the stage while the band was playing the intro to Billies. He had a giant baby bottle and pacifier which he threw into the crowd. He then ran around on stage and patted all the guys on the back.

I love how it took Bela to get Carter to really overtake his role in Two Step in late '96/summer '97, after just being a time-keeper from '93-mid '96.

Not only is this Crash's best performances, it's one of the finest in the band's history, IMO. Nothing to feel guilty about.

This was one of the first shows I ever listened to in my B + P infancy -- around mid-1999. Received it on a cassette (not sure why; CD-R's were definitely on the move then) and I absolutely wore it OUT. Had no idea it was considered one of the band's finest shows until about mid-2000, when I ventured into the scary world of DMB messageboards. Typical Situation's AUD still sounds so much better than what we got, but I can't say enough good things about this release. Show really takes me back.

My ONLY problem with that entire show is the mix on Typical; Jeff's saxophone is way too quiet.

It wasn't Jeff, it was Paul McCandless. And I agree, but even with that it still doesn't take away from the performances themselves. That's how amazing this show was.

Busted this out last week even though I usually like to save it for fall/winter but it didn't matter. Disc 2 blows me away. Typical is on another level of outrageous. What I'd give to travel back to this show

I saw this thread yesterday, noticed everyone raving about Crash, and concluded that TDC is on a massive cocaine binge. Then I went and listened to it and I was blown away. I've listened to this CD several times but always skipped Crash out of habit :lol. I must have listened to it five times last night...I didn't even realize the song could be played that well. I can't believe the little Roi jam...Nice work DMB.

If Coffin sticks around with DMB full time the Flecktones should get McCandless to tour with them again.

It really is a beautiful version of the song. I'd take a version like that at every show, to be honest.

i could have sworn the said mccandless... but then again they also said hes a keyboard and harmonica player, while mccandless blatantly plays sax so i must have gotten it confused somehow...
