Lightening strikes
And silver motorbikes
Are roaring down the open road
Wind on my skin
I'm hungry to begin
And my cup has overflowed

So let fall the rain
Down into these desert veins
I'm taking back what they stole
While there's diamonds in the mind
Can't afford to be continued
By someone else's pigeonhole

So I made up my mind
I made up my mind
Gonna move on ahead
Stead of lagging behind

Half past seven
And way up in the heaven
The stars are singing in the sky
Lying half dressed
Your head upon my breast
Listening to the oceans lullaby

Standing where we are
It seems so far
From the cold light of day
Where the faces full of grief
And the grinding of the teeth
Been eating my belief away

Cracks in the veneer
The light so severe
Shining down the avenue
Try to join the throng
But its feeling all wrong
What are you supposed to do

Shoulder that despair
Take a lung of dirty air
Turn to watch the sun set red
On the ruins of a culture
And a sky that's filled with vultures
Circling over your head!

i have been on a huge(ly obsessive) david gray kick for about 6 months now, and i am kicking myself for not getting into him earlier. i have pretty much everything released at this point, and a bunch of live only stuff, and he is just such an incredibly lyricist. i love his voice too, i am so weird. :lol

anyone else?

y'all better :nod or you'll get the :oar, just fyi.

ya gray rocks. i first started listening to him in 2000, he and his band were supposed to open for dmb at alpine. that fell through, but i really enjoyed the music then (it was flesh). shortly after i got white ladder and my first show was early 01 id say in indy. seen 4 shows since. good times.

ATO released the region 1 dvd in the states in november. the 21st i think. i bought it on friday night, it was on sale for 15.99 at virgin. i looked everywhere (FYE and best buy) for it before then, finally found it at virgin and grabbed it.

my roommate was being annoying about me watching it on the tv though (even though when it comes down to it, it's my damn tv AND my damn dvd player) so i only got through baltimore because he was around basically all weekend.

i wish there were more wide shots of the whole band without being ALL THE WAY at the back of the venue. my one complaint so far.

how much are his tickets generally?

Wescoast
01-12-2007, 12:24 PM
the tickets to the last show was fairly pricey, i wanna say around 50 bucks each.

after reading through this thread, i decided to blow some of my best buy giftcard on the dvd. got home, smoked a bowl and jammed for 2 hours. i must say the cinematography is great. really captures the lighting well. and there wasnt 1 shot of the crowd, so you really feel like you are right on stage watching the show. it was a really enjoyable watch, and something that would be perfect to have on as background entertainment for a party. strongly recommend it.

to me, david and his band have an incredibly full sound, especially now with the addition of a couple more people. and they really make every song sound great, even ones that i am not particularly fond of. they have an arena sound and played in small auditoriums last tour. if they were to tour a couple years in a row, i really think they could sell out a mini arena tour again (like 03 or whenever they sold out uic and msg and stuff). it was awesome to see this show in a tiny auditorium right down the street from me in sd.

A Century Ends is incredible. I've gone through phases of favorite songs, but lately "Debauchery" and "Let The Truth Sting" have been it. "Let the Truth Sting" has incredible lyrics and is just sung so perfectly. And "A Flame Turns Blue" is a pretty consistent favorite, again incredible lyrics.

The sun above the cotton grass
Is sinking down like lead
The seagulls know the truth of it
And scream it overhead
Hold on to St. Christopher
The sky is murderous red
Go to sleep my one true love
Our glory lies ahead
Then we'll be running
Afraid of nothing
Then we'll be running

I can't stop listening to this one (Nos da Cariad.) I'm really digging the whole album - the title track is fantastic too.

I like the album overall, but I can't help feeling a little disappointed by it too. It feels like a regression in a way. Just got home from the Toronto show at Massey Hall. Pretty sublime performance overall. David was really talkative, told a couple detailed stories before "Breathe" and "Falling Down the Mountainside" about his inspirations behind them. Apparently tonight was the first live performance of "Transformation" so far. He told someone to shut up and talk over a slice of pizza in 10 minutes during the encore closer, haha.

I was REALLY disappointed about that. I heard it at the WXRT thing earlier in the day, and it was great, but felt like it was lacking something without the full band behind it. I thought I might find out if I was right later on, but alas, it was not to be. :boohoo

Nice, I've always wanted to catch Say Hello Wave Goodbye live, and after seeing him about 8 times I still haven't. He's playing great shows this year though and I'm enjoying the new album. The webcast show on Saturday night on Yahoo Screen was an excellent performance.

Love that he plays long sets, first time I saw him it was song after song, so cool compared to artists/bands now that are in and out....

Yes it was. Anyone know if there's a screen and/or audio capture out there?

What's the deal with Dun Laoghaoire? I went to a show in May where he was playing the full Mutineers album first, then a bunch of older songs, and Dun Laoghaoire was one of the songs included in the Mutineers half. But it's not on the album...?

- A *HUGE* Thank you to Lesley in making my hat rig to put my DR-2d in and for helping me track the show. Thank you!

- Crowd around me was pleasant. Little banter between songs/clapping from people around me, does
not affect the quality of this recording at all.

- Please enjoy this show as much as I enjoyed recording it.

Also pumped about the Toronto show. But a bit worried about his voice and stuff. Seems like he's been touring pretty hard this whole year.

Greatly enjoyed the show last night. Was pleasantly surprised with a lot the stuff from mutineers. Much more energy on the songs that on album version. Birds of the High Artic had a pretty rocking ending. Voice not perfect but much better than I thought it would be.

I haven't even picked up Mutineers yet. Is it good? I wasn't crazy about the last two albums. Where does this one fall in comparison?

It's better than Draw The Line and Foundling but not as good as Life In Slow Motion imo. But that's not really an insult because I consider LISM to be his best album. Mutineers has a very lush, expansive sound and the lyrics are at times a little more abstract but still solid as usual. Overall I thinks it's worth checking out and that's coming from someone that wasn't that thrilled with the last couple albums either.

Pretty much agree with this. Pacing generally of those two just too slow and too sparse for me. This one still has a bit of a slow-ish pace relative but often build and have a bit of punch to it and has a lushness of voices throughout. "Gulls" (music video available on youtube), for instance, is a bit of a slow one but the lushness makes it a cool, dreamy song and it also has some punch to it.
