ABOUT THE SHOW
08.07.2004 Alpine Valley Music Theatre, East Troy, WI was the first night in a two night stand at one of DMB’s most-traveled-to summer tour stops. The Alpine Valley show was a near perfect setlist from the show opener greeting, Hello Again to the encore featuring Typical Situation followed by Warehouse. New song Sugar Will was played as a long jam and another song making its debut that summer, Joyride, was also featured on the setlist. A special highlight of the Alpine night one Live Trax recording is Crazy Easy, never before released live!

A true surprise of the show included Super Freak, DMB’s tribute to the late great Rick James, which sent the crowd into a frenzy! Other noteworthy parts of the show include Dave singing parts of #36 on the outro of Everyday, the solemnly beautiful I’ll Back You Up and Bartender, which was dedicated to the troops working hard to keep the world safe for us.

Crazy Easy lyrics, from the almanac:

Come over
Fast forwards
Seeing you like I'm looking for you
In a crowded room
Everything's gone but you
Your friends say:
Everything inside you's twisted
More like a mirror thing
Looking there saying
All the bad bad habits (havoc?)gone inside my head, yeah

So I'm missing
Just the strength
To come up and say: hey how are you doing?
You make me forget myself
And I don't even know your name

Now I'm crazy
Wanting this fire
You know I've gone crazy
Staring across the night (tonight?)

?????
Stop here for me
Yeah yeah yeah yeah
Yeah yeah yeah
?????
Threw in some fun day fun
Oh I swear I can't predict
Anything is gonna go on good
You said you did your best
You said you did your best
But not to me
I overheard you talking to a friend
Fate would have a dream (lying next to you?)
If I could just turn on

You're crazy
Stumble in the lie
Forget the fuck your crazy
You ain't even drop a lie

Just two
Just two of us
I'll admit
It's almost embarrassing
That I could be so fast
But you don't even know
You don't even show
I'm gone, yeah yeah

Lots of dark time you give

Won't you stay and dance with me, babe?

I swear you're crazy
For me tonight
I told them it's crazy
You didn't even wanna step out tonight
Your so, you know
Yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah
I'm alive
And you shine on me
Yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah
Let your light shine on me there baby
It's on again

Yeah, I like this pick.

The case against a great Crazy Easy being released is that it just seemingly declined while Sugar Will, Joyride and Hello Again escalated that summer as we all know. Some of those early versions of those three are interesting but a bit hollow (particularly HA) compared to what they grew into, which is probably a part of the consideration by the LiveTrax folks given that those songs are the highlight of that tour.

Granted the two 2004 picks thus far have been from August or later, so when the next '04 release comes out in 2009 they may beget one from June for all I know.

sugar will lyrics - as best as I can make it out (like i said earlier, the night two lyrics are a lot better and i put them on the almanac a while ago)

You see me
Have you seen, me?
Could you spare a minute
Talk to me
Well I know itís
I wasÖ
Standing here by myself
Makes me wonder if you knew

Sugar ainít poison, but
Sugar will kill you
Too much of a good thing
Maybe not so sweet

So when I came in stumbling
I caught you hanging up the phone on
no no, well I was just ?? you out
Now you got me pounding over it
Now so, and I liquored up myself
And I load out on you
I didnít mean throw my hands up on myself
But you feel over, you knew

Sugar ainít poison, but
Sugar will kill you
Too much of a good thing
Maybe not so sweet

Itís different when I think of you
So I think, now what you gonna do?
Blame myself out of it
You say, I didnít mean to
I donít know when to say when
Please, reconsider me, myself
And I seach, search go away
Please donít listen to myself
To get you back, you knew

Sugar ainít poison, but
Sugar will kill you
Too much of a good thing
Maybe not so sweet

this release looks great. i'm thrilled. and the crazy-easy is a big part of it. even if it isn't the best, its still awesome.

this release has a lot of unusual things that i'm looking forward to

hello again opener
#41->the stone
crazy-easy!!!!
superfreak
ants->everyday
and the encore is pretty awesome

now i'll have to hope for a good good time on a wh disc (or maybe the album bonus disc?) and i still do want that 7.16 crazy-easy but that can wait awhile now.

i'm REALLY looking forward to this one. and as a new member of the Alpine circle-jerk crew, this is pretty awesome.

This is one of the FIRST best shows of '04...so I can understand why it's here. In fact, it's probably the FIRST show that had the "wow" factor. By the end, it might not even rank in the top few for the tour, AT THE TIME but of course all is relative...so it's a cool choice by me.

As I basically said, Jack, it's all relative. I can remember watching the sets that year. Nothing much happened...there was a lot of build-up for Alpine...and the Hello Again opener was HUGE for the legitimization of that stand. Some other songs proved worthy for that run, but in the end, '04 was pretty much up in the air -- as usual, it was...which show did you go to?--that was the best

First check to this site today ... what awesome news!
Besides the Red Rocks set, this will be the first show I have attended that is released.
It's about time Alpine got some love from the band. And I am happy with this one (although June '97would have been good too).
Solid solid set, no guests, just the band and Butch. The only real dull song on paper is WTWE and that wasn't overplayed.
Thank you WH for a good choice ... next time go the Phish route and add some pro-shot video for us all to download.

One of the best things for me was ... I didn't listen to any of the new songs before attending the show ... went in blind.
They hit the stage when I was in line at the porta-potty in the back of the venue ... I fell in love with Hello Again. Don't remember much about Crazy/Easy except for the taper's recording. JoyRide was exciting, like a new Billies. Sugar Will blew my mind. And the rest of the set was just the kind of show you were wanting. The crowd was hot. LONG encore (for not having a Two Step).

LT3 isn't a very energetic show in the first place. I have to retract my statement, because I think that show like 08.27.00 needs to have a quieter crowd, since it's a quieter show. Just don't fit if you put a lot of crowd cheering in songs like Busted Stuff and I'll Back You Up.

yeah, just given the fact that songs like joy ride, grey st, everyday and even the hello again probably do not sound that drastically different (tapers versions at least...i'm hoping the production on ltv8>ltv2) between the two shows, it'd be interesting to see an earlier show from the tour when the songs were evolving. actually, this is really solid and i guess pretty emblematic of an '04 set with some real stand outs and the little super freak business. If the performances were up to standard, it'd be the best show of the year. The setlist is spectacular. Most of the board after the show (only by judging on paper) were saying it was better than CP.Yeah I remember watching the set live and it just kept getting better and better.

why do people pre order so early?

I mean, the warehouse is going to send you so many emails there is zero chance you forget. Why not hold onto your money for another month plus. All you're doing is letting the wh make more money off of your order. There is no incentive to pre order early.

There may be no basis of fact here, but it seems like when I pre-order early, I receive the CD earlier than when I wait. Again, could be coincidence. So, why not?

I don't know. GGP is pretty stale, imo. Both performance and mix-wise. Not to say there aren't a few solid performances on there, but not enough to claim it to be one of the better shows from 2004.

I still don't see why people rip on the performance of this show. I feel like it all comes back to #41. Every other song sounds at least tight and solid to me, with a few songs being above-average (Joy Ride, Rapunzel, BOWA, LIOG, The Stone, Sugar Will, Warehouse).

I'm not ripping on them. I'm saying they're stale. Most of those performances didn't have much life to them. WWYS was kinda bland and hesitant, BOWA is pretty lifeless, especially Roi's solo, DIDO and Jimi were both kinda meh as well. Like I said, there are some good performances, but overall, the show is pretty stale. I just don't think it had much flow and the show suffered from that right from the get-go. A few good performances skattered throughout a show does not equate to a great show, imo. It takes a bit more than that.

And the mix of GGP does not help its case either. It's very boxy and Roi is pretty drwoned in the mix.

I had an awesome time at GGP and the mix certainly didnt do the show justice. I would almost rather listen to the AUD copy

I thought the GGP show was one of the better 04 shows in my opinion.

Wish they would have chosen the 98 Alpine show instead.

I'd take most of the shows in early to mid August over it. I don't really follow the band much anymore, but I'm excited for this release. I still love the show I saw in August of '04 in Bonner Springs. That was another great show with a wonderful flowing set.

Just got home from work and saw this. Fuck Yeah. Great show. This was my 8th DMB show, 6th at Alpine, and my first time with good seats. One of my favorite shows Ive seen.

Im glad Alpine gets a long awaited release. Really pumped to hear this.

I wouldn't...all the AUDs I downloaded and listened to were horrible. If it hadn't been so windy, it wouldn't have been THAT bad, but the wind really cut the life out of it for me. I don't think the mix on LT2 is the greatest, but it is NOT as bad as people make it out to be IMO.

Not a bad pick, imo. For the next one, I'd love to see something from June, 1997, which is just about the best run of shows dmb has ever performed.

I'm not so sure that we will see anything 1994 or prior. The reason being, the band allowed tapers to tap into their soundboard up until 1995. So most shows that were taped during that era are soundboards. The band's management is probably thinking, and rightfully so, that if they release the Big League Chew show, for example, no one will buy it because an excellent soundboard recording of that show already exists.

man, i was at the show the next night...damn! actually the one the next night wasn't that great so i'm not that pissed. if it was night two in alpine 05 then that'd be different...i had a blast there. overall i'm happy with this choice though.

The highlight of this show is not their rendition of Superfreak. It's the amazing encore. Shows ending with songs like Warehouse need to find their way back in 07. Shows ending in any unusual number would be nice. The Stone 6/22/01...Warehouse 7/31/04 and 8/7/04......things of this nature.

That's what I really like about this release -- we're getting some other soundboard songs that we haven't seen a lot of recently, like Help Myself, Granny, I'll Back You Up, '04 songs, and even When The World Ends, so I'm glad we're getting at least a little variety from the usual cluster of songs that we always see get released.

i miss Crazy Easy... listening to 8/7 right now and while it isn't the "best" version it is still great to hear. i'm hoping for a return of it this tour/album which some set lyrics. i still really think 6/26 is one of the better versions out there.
