Recently is tough as well. I never get sick of Recently, unless its the 2001 4 min version.

This version of What Would You Say reminded me how much I loved that song in when I first started listening to the band. So far this is my most listened to DMBLIVE release.

Dave's guitar playing is so prevalent on Jimi and WWYS. One of the best parts of '94 shows (along with the 'Roi domination train).

yeah i really miss what dave would do during the WWYS roi solo.

I think 2/4/94 Athens set II is the best recently recording of the era. Dave's guitar is so crisp.

I wish they would release a WWYS before they chopped it up to make it a single

those old wwys's were cool but i like the way the song flows with the way it's arranged now.

so you're saying it had no flow with the old jam at the end?

I think it had even more flow back then, you had every band member taking turns in almost a stop-start jam, then Dave always laid down some funky guitar playing (which he probably could not pull off for the life of him now) and some improv lyrics, then Roi, Dave and Carter would take the song back out to the main theme

it was a thing of beauty

While I am not a fan of the lack of Dave these days I don't think this is true.

yes that's exactly what i said :rolleyes

like i said, i like the old ones, i just like the way it is now better. them all taking solos is fun and all but stopping and starting over and over again during that section while everyone takes a couple short solos pales in comparison to the breakdown and riff they jam over now.

While I am not a fan of the lack of Dave these days I don't think this is true.

while I'm not knocking his guitar playing, I just don't think his fingers could keep up with what he was doing back then on some of those WWYS jams

I think it would be sloppier now, if that makes any sense

i'm out of my mind because i don't like the way the song was back then? i find the section very uninspired, kind of cliche, and jamband lite-ish. the only good thing about those old WWYS's is stefan who was laying down some funk like i've never heard him do since.

and as for dave, there has been no evidence to show his guitar playing has somehow gotten worse with time which is a ludicrous notion. he's never been confident with his ability to begin with and as they've kept adding members and other people to fill things out and take over solo's he's delegated his role to strictly rhythm.

sci22
01-10-2009, 07:25 PM
like I said, I'm not knocking his ability to play a lick, I'm aware he was never much of a soloist

I just don't think he'd be able to tear up a riff now, as clean as he does in the 12.31.93 WWYS.

FiddySpence
01-10-2009, 07:45 PM
again, why do you think that? he's not old, not even close, and has played guitar one can assume every day since the 80's, he wouldn't lose the ability.

batleon
01-10-2009, 09:10 PM
I don't think he's saying he can't ever do it again. He just can't do it now because, let's face it, he's out of practice when it comes to that kind of stuff. I personally would love to see Dave try to solo a little more again.

FiddySpence
01-10-2009, 09:54 PM

Subject: DMB COMING TO THE MIDWEST

If any of you out there know Dave personally or any of his management staff
could you PLEASE pass along this request:

There is a great bar here in Columbia, Mo. called the Blue Note
(phone: (314) 874-1944 or (314) 874-8889) that is crying for Dave to come
and play there (or maybe it's just me). Could someone please pass this
information along. Also, the address is : 17 North 9th Street
Columbia, MO. 65201

It is a 800-1000 person venue. I'm sure that they would be very interested
in booking he and the boyz. I realize that they are coming to Kansas
(DEFINITE road trip), but I would LOVE to see them on "home turf". Please
let me know if they express any interest in playing here...it would make my
day. By the by, the town of Columbia has three college campuses in it.
Mizzou is roughly 25000 large. Great place to get some exposure!

Thanks,
Dave Culp (C526208@MIZZOU1.MISSOURI.EDU)

PS- sorry to all of you that this doesn't effect.

Grabbed this one over the weekend. Really digging it. It's a little looser than the one from November, but the band is hitting a lot harder than on that show. I'm on R&R, and so far this Nancies and Get In Line are the stand outs. That's one of the best Get In Lines I've heard. Rhyme isn't a favorite of mine, but they really nailed this one.
