Venue Information:
Bethel Woods Center for the Arts is a $100 million outdoor performing arts center and museum located approximately 90 minutes from New York City at the site of the original 1969 Woodstock festival in Bethel, NY. The 15,000 seat outdoor performing arts venue and The Museum at Bethel Woods are set within nearly 2,000 bucolic acres.

The Pavilion Stage can accommodate 15,000 guests both under cover and on a natural sloping lawn, while offering unique backdrops including the original festival site and the majesty of the surrounding Sullivan County countryside. Other venues at the center include a 1,000-seat outdoor Terrace Stage, the Museum Events Gallery – an intimate indoor space for performance, lectures and special events, and the original Woodstock concert site, which holds a permit for 30,000 concertgoers to attend major musical events. This season marks the 10th anniversary of the Harvest Festival, an annual event celebrating the bounty, talent, and beauty of Sullivan County and the surrounding area.

The Museum at Bethel Woods explores the unique experience of the Woodstock festival, its significance as a culminating event of a decade of radical cultural transformation, and the legacies of the Sixties and Woodstock today. Through personal stories and profiles, immersive multi-media exhibit displays and experiences, engaging programs, and educational events, The Museum will encourage inter-generational dialogue about important ideas and issues relevant to today. It will also help preserve the historic site on which the 1969 Woodstock Music and Art Fair took place. The Museum at Bethel Woods is an impressive facility with a permanent exhibit space, a special exhibit gallery, Events Gallery and museum retail store.

The purpose of the arts center is to improve the quality of life in Sullivan County and the surrounding region by promoting economic development and interest in our region and its residents through arts, education, and culture at the Bethel Woods Center for the Arts.

I'll definitely be there. Really excited about this one. I've been hoping they'd stop at this venue ever since I first heard about it. Looks like a real nice place and it'll be an easy drive for me.

It'll also be really nice to have my shows spread out for once. I'll hit up SPAC and then still have another show in August.

I'll be interested to see how hard tickets are to come by, since this is a new venue and during the week (and in an area sparsely populated). NY sure got plastered with dates this year; I've got Scranton, SPAC, Hartford, Syracuse, Jones Beach, and Bethel all within a four hour drive. I'll be requesting through the Warehouse for this and a bunch of other shows and see what I come up with...the freedom of being done with college and having money to blow.

Yeah for me it is:

Syracuse - 3 hr
Bethel - 1 hr
Hartford - 2 hr
SPAC - 2 hr
Jones Beach - 2 hr
Boston - 3.5 hr
Hershey - 3 hr
Scranton - 1.5 hr
Camden - 3 hr

That's 14 shows within a 3.5 hr drive. Never realized what a clutch location I moved to.

I live in Lake George, so this is about 3 1/2 hours away, with OK traffic. Right now, I'm thinking I'm just going to drive back home after the show. I heard the lots can be bad, but I'm hoping they're not that bad.

Stewart isn't a huge airport, but it's not bad. Supposed to eventually be the fourth NYC airport, MTA runs it now. I live like 10 minutes west of it. Unless you're flying from Philly, Atlanta, or Florida, you'll have to layover somewhere. Definitely the closest to Bethel.

Mapquest, Yahoo and Google maps all have me going there 3 completely different ways. and it seems as though its all back roads. this place really is in the middle of nowhere isnt it? Would anyone who is more familiar with getting there Help me out? is mapquest, google or yahoo maps the most accurate from Jim Thorpe, PA?? EASIEST would probably be I-476N (PA Turnpike, toll road) to I-81N to I-84E, to one of those windy woodland roads up to the venue.

Turnpike would take you right smack in between Scranton and Wilkes-Barre (Pittston exit) where you jump on 81N, you split off onto 84E after Scranton. It's not too bad. I wouldn't go 115 to 80 to 380 to 84....that's a pain in the ass.

Anyone else doing the shuttle from Monticello? It's 8 bucks, but your ticket turns into a 5 dollar credit in the casino when you get back, so it's 8 bucks at worst. It leaves either 3 hours before the opening band if you're doing the museum (which is totally worth it, if you haven't seen it this year), or 1 hour if you want to just go to the show. The best part, though, is that the buses at the end of the show leave directly from the back of the lawn, and have their own little access route up to the main drag, so you can leave after the encore and still beat people back who left for the lots before the encore. It's about a half mile walk from the venue to the lots, and traffic can get bad fast. So if you're not planning on tailgating (or want to tailgate at Monticello before getting on the bus), it's a pretty great option.

Crowd makes or breaks the lawn, so it's hard to say considering DMB has never played there. My guess would be it will be close to a mix of SPAC/Darien/Scranton. I've never been to Scranton but SPAC and Darien have somewhat wild lawns.

That said, loosen up and the lawn is a great experience anywhere. I used to say I'd never sit on the lawn because I associated the lawn with the fence, meaning lining up early, not moving, and getting squeezed out. You don't always need to see the white in Dave's eyes to enjoy the show, or even have your own seat. Given, some times I like to sit closer, but the lawn is bearable anywhere if you just enjoy yourself.

yah i know itll be a good show. I'm gonna have to be that guy hanging onto the fence for dear life tho lol i wont settle for anything less if im gonna be stuck on the lawn. I wish I could say i'd never see a show from the lawn again after my first show, but getting four inside seats next to each other is next to impossible even if i could afford it.

Of the 17 shows I've been to, I've sat lawn 7 times (at three different venues, including multiple times at SPAC). I've been sober times, buzzed times, and once I was drunk. I've NEVER had any of that horror story stuff that people always say, and only witnessed one person urinating even remotely close to me. My guess is most of the time people say that sort of thing, they're either lying or blowing things out of proportion, or they just mention it like you just did and that opinion of the lawn persists. Either that, or people here are the unluckiest bunch alive.

lol my first show (http://dmbalmanac.com/TourShowSet.aspx?id=453056277&tid=87&where=2006) I was on the lawn, I had a forty year old lady pass out in front of me before the show even started and her husband couldn't even pick her up so I ended up having to put her on my back and carry her gross ass off the lawn, then spend the next twenty minutes fighting to get back to my spot where my friend were, who had in the mean time been peed on by a drunk guy, then when the show came, anything that wasn't played at full volume was completely drowned out. after THAT ordeal, I said never again at SPAC lol. but Bethel is going to my first time seeing them outside SPAC, though I had tickets to D&T @ UMASS Amherst and had to pass them up :(

I try to stay out of Hartford and Camden in general, I wouldn't be surprised if the lawns suck there because the venue fits the city.

Hartford is one of the best sounding venues DMB plays. To bad you can't get good seats and enjoy a show. I have seen all but 2 of the shows DMB has played there and have NEVER has an issue. Don't shit on Hartford cause of the problems ticketless people cause outside.

I just said the city of Hartford sucks. I've been in the city several times, my company has an office in Rocky Hill, and I've been in the middle of the city multiple times. Also, I said that I've seen a show at Hartford, 7-16-04 I think? One of the best Crazy-Easy's of the summer if my memory serves. Also, the best seats I have ever had, something like Section 100 row 6 (again, this all coming from my memory from five years ago).

I was simply making fun of the city of Hartford, as well as the crime-ridden cesspool that is Camden. Neither city is a metropolitan wonder by any stretch of the imagination.

Okay, I wasn't going to attend, but now I want to. Here's my question...do I pay $90 for a reserved ticket even if I plan on sitting lawn, or pass on this show? Venue is about an hour from my apartment, and I have Thursday and Friday off to head down to VA Beach.

And to anyone wondering why I would buy a reserved ticket and sit on the lawn, I'd rather buy a lawn seat but there are none left. And I'd rather sit with my friends on the lawn than sit by myself in the reserved seat.

Just saved myself having to decide that issue. Picked up a pair of lawn tickets for face value ($80) off of Ants. I only need one, but I should be able to sell the other one in the lots, right? Not trying to rain on the parade, but odds are Bethel will NOT be like last night, nor Alpine N2, nor SPAC N2, etc. Slightly more Big Whiskey (1-2 songs more), a bit more radio friendly (1-2 songs more). That means 2-4 songs must be dropped. Those songs are the rarities we want to see.

But still, I'm excited to see this show. Should be fun.

Yah I'm still holding out though... It's not like an MSG show or another show that's more for publicity or something, so I'm hoping they won't feel like they'll have to commercialize it. If they wanna sell themselves to this venue, they should play like last night, not like it's a televised production. But I can only hope lol

Bethel has more going for it than it has going against it, though. It should probably field a strong crowd, being a small venue in a location that is convenient to both the SPAC and NYC crowds. We know the band reacts well to unique environmental settings, and I think they'll take very well to Bethel. They're coming off of a pretty fantastic run of shows leading up to it, and I think there's a chance that they use Syracuse (baseball stadium in a city environment) as a hypothetical night one for Bethel.

The negative is that it's a one-nighter on a weekday, so the crowd may not be as hardcore leaning as it could be. I'm not saying anyone should raise their expectations to SPAC level, but I personally expect it to be an above average one nighter.

snyddogg430
08-02-2009, 07:49 PM
Okay, I can now officially say this because I have tickets in hand...I have one lawn seat for sale (I'm using the other). I can meet you at the venue, one thing is I probably won't get there until 6ish (have to work until 4).

If I don't get any takers, I'll just unload it in the lots, but I'd like to have someone from here take it.

my knocks on the experience is based around the tailgating. The fact that they didn't allow grills was awful and did ruin my pre-show experience. Thats what i'm curious about.

Well yes getting there is kind of a pain, but if everything was great last year I would've made the trip again. I was slightly tempted toanyway, but it's just better if I don't. I loved the venue itself, everything leading up to showtime was great until I saw my seats. WH could not have given me worse seats, lawn would've been much preferable to these. In the back as far to one side as possible. Terrible stage view. I could accept this, but then I quickly learned how terrible this crowd was. One of the worst crowds I've ever been in - loud, obnoxious, plastered. I abandoned the shitty seats and the douchebags and went to the lawn, where I found the other extreme of a bad crowd, people who just didn't care. So I stood on the back of the lawn, tried to enjoy the rest of the show and left during Two Step to beat traffic.

Typing this up, it really doesn't sound too bad. Like, I know I sound like a whiny little bitch, but it's hard to put into words properly I think. My expectations were probably a little too high as well, but I think most people who had the same experience would feel similar.

to me it just isnt worth it. we had beautiful weather last year. perfect night, but i can see that place being an absolute shitfest from the moment you got out of your car, all along the mile walk to the venue, and trecking through the lawn to your seats. the venue was absolutely gorgeous, but everything from the drive, to the mile walk to the venue will turn me away every year.

Oh, don't get me wrong, I agree....but I want to add one more show this year, and don't want to do Hershey or Camden. SPAC will probably be a shitshow and Blossom is a bit of a drive (7.5 hours). I doubt I'll make it to Palm Beach this summer like I usually do.....so that leaves Bethel. Any other suggestions?

you think the walk was far for Bethel haha just wait for Blossom...I just hope for your sake its not 100 out like it was when i went in 2006.

edit: and it was a haul. Straight drive across almost all of PA and into Ohio on I80. Just a long ass drive and a hot day. I may go back some day...I just really don't like Ohio.

hmm, my only real alternative is Blossom. What I'd do is leave Scranton on Thursday and drive to Pittsburgh. I'd then go from Pittsburgh to Blossom on Friday afternoon, then depending on hotel prices, either stay at Blossom overnight Friday into Saturday and drive back to Pittsburgh on Friday night or Saturday. Then drive from Pittsburgh to Scranton on Sunday.

Plus, Saturday 6/26 is my birthday. It could be an early b-day present to myself. I don't know. Bethel is slightly more convienient....plus then I'd be seeing 3 straight shows (Pittsburgh, Bethel, Scranton).

as for the drive, 6.5 hours is nothing, as i have frequented indiana as of late (11 hours) straight through. i actually pass the exit for blossom on my way to indiana :)

Conyngham, PA to Blossom Music Center

Total Travel Estimate: 5 hours 26 minutes / 332.79 miles

318 miles on I 80 W...worst thing was I drove half way home that night. Slept outside State College, PA. 10 hours of driving (not including concert traffic) and 550 miles in a day was killer.

and if I do go to Bethel, I'll end up doing vip parking, this way I could use a portable gas grill to tailgate.

Question for those that have been to Bethel-
I am considering either doing VIP Parking or the Bus from the Racetrack. Which would you recommend to avoid the most traffic possible.

Thank you

Get there for Amos Lee for whoever is going to the show. I've seen him several times on his own over the years and he's great. I'm jealous I won't be seeing him open for DMB (I was excited, he was originally announced to open at SPAC). He has really stepped it up with his live shows, but he's still pretty laid back...bluesy/folksy.

doesn't seem like its worth the effort, especially this close to game time. you're inside, i can't see it being that bad. i was at the very front of the lawn last time so back of the pavilion really didn't seem too bad, a great slope inside so unless theres a giant in front of you i'm sure you'll be fine.

I sat last row at Star Lake in 2005 and still had a great time. The last row of the pavilion is still much better than the rail of the lawn. Plus it's cool to get an unobstructed view behind you of the entire lawn. I'd say just go and enjoy the show!

What's the tailgating situation here?

As of now I plan on getting there around 3 for grillin' and drinkin' but would like to know for sure if I can do it that early.

gas grills only in the Premiere lot, from what I remember. Drinkin' is fair game anywhere.

Can you just get premiere parking day of the show?

I saw on the website it says lots open 2 hours prior to start of show. How accurate is that?

I got there around 5 last year and the main lot just started to fill up. I'm sure 3 would be okay....might be worth calling the box office just to be safe. I wish I could get premiere on the day of the show, it's been sold out for a month on TM. :\

Just found out today I have a meeting for work at 2 pm that day, so won't be getting there until around 5-6. Still plenty of time but I was hoping on a nice long tailgate since I haven't been able to do that yet this year.

I've been to 73 shows now and have only seen I'll Back You Up once (and it was Dave and Tim). Needless to say I'd be thrilled to see that, but I'm not counting on it since they just played it at the last show.

I think we have a shot at Drive In Drive Out, The Stone, One Sweet World, JTR, Busted Stuff, and all that other stuff they haven't been playing in the past few shows.
