8.27.2000 Meadows Music Theatre, Hartford, CT is the third volume in the DMB Live Trax series. This was the third show in a three-night stand at the Meadows, a show that many fans have listed in their top 5 due to the choice set list and the energy with which the songs were played that summer evening.

I've never created a thread like this before, but I'm listening to this show right now and it is a great show. They were on this night! Seek Up -> Heartbeat -> Linus & Lucy -> PNP -> Rapunzel is great! You have Raven, Busted Stuff & JTR, some songs that have gone into hibernation for some time now. Also a great version of The Maker!

This is one of my favorite shows, Dave's voice is an A+ that night, plus the mix is outstanding. Boyd's solo in Nancies sonunds so fresh and clean. also it has an amazing Raven, perfect version. My favorite Live Trax barely over LT 7

'Roi always seems to shine in the Maker, and this version may be my favorite. His solo is not exactly complex, but it's so perfect and so beautiful. Whenever I want to remember 'Roi, I turn on this Maker (or Listener Supported #41).

This release is also my favorite live release. There isn't a bad song in the bunch . . . and the Stone>Drive segue needs to come back . . . now.

Second only to Listener Supported to me. Raven, JTR, Busted Stuff, Recently, Grey Street (extended) and Stone in the same show = happiness.

This show always reminds me of when I first got into the band. This was my first show and when I got home I immediately downloaded all the lws songs I could find on napster. Amazing to think Dave's voice is this good and it's night 3 of the run.

I'm so on the fence about this mix. It's easily the best release for Stefan, but at the same time the crowd noise really kills this. It doesn't hurt the show, rather just the release itself. I've always been a stickler for crowd noise because I feel that part of the reason a live show is released was because it was...in fact live. If we can barely hear the audience and their excitement for these performances...then part of the purpose of the release is kinda negated in my opinion.

The show is amazing, and just like 12/7/98, the rest of the Hartford '00 weekend needs to be released in all it's glory.

I'm on-board in terms of an almost direct-from-the-soundboard kinda feel. Still, it really doesn't come in to my mind much when listening... like now, while Dave is wailing during Say Bye if you have the volume loud enough, you definately hear the crowd's reaction. And listen to the crowd's reaction to Grey Street... intense

It's certainly not a terrible mix musically. The levels are real nice with the one exception being Roi's level jumping a bit too high during the Heartbeat Jam, but other than that everything is so smooth. I just wish the crowd was mixed in a bit more. GGP and RR '05 are other examples of this.

Outside of not getting laid for a good portion (edited from majority, forgot) of the year, it wasn't a bad life. My roommate was practically living with his girlfriend, would show up on Mondays to watch RAW. I would pretty much hit the gravity bong, listen to shows and play video games. Deliver some pies for money. It's when I started working on the almanac. had nothing better to do.

Absolutely. I'll never forget the last time I was there for dmb, trying to protect my wife from getting squished by the shoving crowd while getting in and getting horse collared from behind by a cop saying he would ruin my night if I didn't 'back off the lady.' All in the background a nice 'lets go whalers!' chant as our soundtrack.

Later that night my buddy (same dude from '00) got arrested while trying to get back to his seat (w/ a meadows employee escort, mind you) and got hit w/ 30 large bail. Luckily we all made it back for n2 and Roi's oboe on Tender and last PFWYG.

Was Minarets cut from N2 that year? I mean what i read could have been total bs.

Jeff Travitz talked to bagby before 8/26 show and he told him we were instore for a big surprise. For some reason we thought it was going to be minarets or exodus. Then, dave started the muted intro and we all freaked out, this was moments later followed by the biggest cockpunch in my dmb show going history. Then, they played it at the next show. Not sure if it was actually on the setlist, though.

Sorry to hear that. I think a lot of it that since I/we go to so many shows there (DMB and others), we know where to park to still have a good time, but avoid a lot of the riff raff.

well, we have stayed that the Red Roof pretty much every year :lol

What is it now, still the motel 6? Only the year we were robbed we stayed at the crowne plaze and were moving from the that to a frat house at trinity (why all our stuff was in the car to get stolen). The red roof always treated us well.

Back when the Jai Alai lot was open the cops would dress up in riot gear and push us out of the lot around 5 or 6 even though the show didn't start til 7 (or 8 on a friday). That was probably the only frustrating experience I've had.. but it happened for at least a few years. Luckily I never saw any of the riots in 99 even though I parked in those lots all three nights. I eventually learned not to park in the "official" Meadows lots anymore.. it's a lot less hassle.

I remember one year (maybe '03 N2?) we parked in those jai alai lots. We left the lot to find friends in another lot, maybe around 4 or so? Then before the show we tried to get back to our car so people could get sweatshirts or something. Lot was completely empty. The cops were there and wouldn't let us in. The conversation went like this, and keep in mind the cop was in his car and everything he said to us he said over his loudspeaker

Cop: STAY ON THE MAIN SIDEWALK. STAY ON THE MAIN SIDEWALK.
Us: We need to get to our car!
Cop: STAY ON THE MAIN SIDEWALK.
Us: It'll just take a minute, we just need to get something out of the car real quick.
Cop: *pause* UMMMMM... HMMMM.... UH..... STAY ON THE MAIN SIDEWALK.

Yeah it was ridiculous.. out of nowhere they started kicking us out of the lot when the band didn't even come on til like 4 hours later. That was quite frustrating. Imagine if you had left your tix in the car instead of just a sweatshirt. You had no way of knowing they wouldn't let you get back to your car.

There's some kind of really smooth professionalism the band reached at '00. You can hear the difference in sound and clarity between '00 shows beyond and pre-00. There's just something more "together". (not saying that pre-00 shows are bad, not in anyway, but certainly a different more free feel.)

No joke. And sometimes these things are edited on the official releases, but on the aud too, there's a gap of only a couple seconds between Nancies and Seek Up. That's like 45 minutes straight of damn near flawless music to start the show.

The encore in a show like this reminds me of how much more they are capable of than the standard Sister/Watchtower type encores.

I have no big gripes with setlists in general, but they should really get more creative with encores. Start by shelving Watchtower for a year.

batleon
01-18-2012, 03:57 PM
I only agree with half your statement. I really think they should do a better job of mixing up their E1s. But the fact of the matter is there are only a few songs in their catalog that they should close shows with. They closed one of my shows with Shake Me and that was deeply unsatisfying.

I can't think of anything they've written in the last ten years that makes an effective closer. If they're in the studio writing new songs then maybe they can work on creating a new closer. That would be nice.

Yea, simply put, this release really represents DMB at a time when they were at their peak. Whether it be new song creation creativity, setlist variation, technical playing skills improved, Dave's strong vocals, great lyrics in songs, etc.. This era really has it all.

"What You Are" is a decent closer when it's not overplayed. Although this song was written 11 years ago now. 2004 version of "Hello Again" with the full intro may work, but that might just be a better opener though.

These guys do horrible encores for the most part. But to argue your statement, here ya go.

What You Are
Grey Street
JTR
Hello Again
You Might Die Trying
Sweet Up and Down

These guys do horrible encores for the most part. But to argue your statement, here ya go.

So Right - 2001, and I'm not sure
What You Are - 2001, yes (never got why people were down on this as a closer)
Grey Street - 2000, yes
JTR - 2000, yes
Hello Again - maybe if they hadn't completely forgotten about it
You Might Die Trying - no, I like it but it's not a show closer
Sweet Up and Down - 2000 and maybe if Dave can settle on lyrics instead of yelling, and if it eventually makes an album

As far as my last point I think it has to be an album song because a show closer needs to be something the casual fan is aware of. A closer needs energy and if most of the crowd isn't familiar with the song they won't get into it.

Mitch
01-18-2012, 04:23 PM
Yeah, E1's can definitely be mixed up easily. Dave can play almost anything solo in that spot, no reason to just rotate the same couple of tunes each tour. And E2's in 3 song encores could be virtually anything.

I think they can close shows with:
Ants
Two Step
Billies
DIDO
Warehouse
Typical
Grey Street
Too Much
LIOG
DDTW
Halloween
Last Stop
Rapunzel

and songs I'm not necessarily in favor of closing, but work:
Stay
YMDT
What You Are

and I know I'm forgetting some

I don't see YMDT, DIDO, Typical, or Graves as encores. The rest I'm on board with, as well as Watchtower or Thank You for covers to close with. That's 14 good closers which should be enough if they mix them up.

Now I'd love to see YMDT, DIDO, Typical, or Graves in E1. Or anything aside from the typical slow song/Dave solo number.

Thrawn
01-18-2012, 04:57 PM
I think a SET closer should be something that everyone is familiar with, but I'm actually a fan of wildass random encores. Rare covers, or strange songs from the back catalog, whatever.

I'd be totally happy with encores like #34 / Sweet Up And Down. Or Money > Money (That's What I Want). Or, back when they had Butch, an encore of Blackbird > Steady As We Go would've worked for me (though probably people will disagree with that, but whatever).

So, using only songs they wrote from the last decade, how about Loving Wings / Shotgun? You can't tell me you would go to a show that ended with that and walk out thinking "that was BULLSHIT." Or Out Of My Hands / You Never Know. Or A Dream So Real / So Damn Lucky. Or Lying In The Hands Of God / Squirm.

batleon

I remember when they voted on each track from the live trax series over on ants to essentially build the ultimate live trax compilation. I was completely blown away when there was not a single sing from live trax 3 that won any slot. I guess it just reminded me of that baseball team that didn't have single superstar but still wins the world series. The chemistry is just perfect. That how this show is. I love that praise on this is so unanimous, since this is basically the exact opposite end of what DMB is doing these days. If now is their fastest and rockingest, this show was their slowest and most emotional. The run in the middle that goes IBYU, Busted Stuff, Recently, Raven, The Maker, Grey Street, Grace, Say Goodbye, Bartender, Say Goodbye doesn't contain a single up-tempo song (by modern DMB standards, certainly).

This is my favorite DMB, the 2000 DMB specifically. I listen to this show all the goddamn time. I love the modern incarnation too, but there's something special about this. Strange thing for them to do, for a couple years there - in the middle of touring stadiums and doing huge shows, take every song down tempo and bring out the really emotional quiet songs from the back catalog. Glad they did it though, that was a hell of a tour.

Oh yeah, this Grey Street rules. I think I prefer the one from Soldier Field in '01 (the one on WH disc), but really it's splitting hairs, they're both fantastic. Then again, most 2000-2001 Grey Streets were :lol

This was my most-played AUD, too. I got it like 3 weeks after I started tape trading, and basically felt like I had won life. I flipped out when they announced it'd be Trax 3; what a great choice.

This is my most listened to Sep. 2000 show (and my third from 2000....behind Giants N3 and Penn State...my first show). We've already got Busted Stuff from it, on WH8 v2, and despite the AUD being great, a live release would be nice. My only thing is the lack of Flecktones and lack of Raven:

2000 might be my favorite time for how the band sounded and played.

I've come more towards agreeing with this. '95 has always been favorite, since that's when I first started seeing them live, and there's of course that hunger and drive they played with that year. But I think 2000 may be the peak year for them. I too love how they sounded this year, the pace of the songs, the loose jamminess to a lot of it, Dave's voice, the LWS songs, the final year before the kick in the nuts of Everyday. 2000 is definitely right there with '95 as my favorite.

(Of course, then I listen to something like LT30, and say maybe late 93 was the best :lol

Thrawn
10-04-2014, 09:20 AM
No, 2000 was the best. Or possibly 2002. But definitely one of those two.

2001 I also think they played incredibly well (see the most recent Trax) but the song selection diminishes it a lot.

Bluewater34
10-04-2014, 10:16 AM
2000 definitely benefits from being the last year where literally anything they were playing would be good to hear. Every setlist from that year is a winner. But yeah, there is just something about 2000 that clicks for me. It's got some of the looser, jazzier feel of '99, but without the drag that held up a lot of '99 shows. But at the same time there is an intensity to that year. It's not the hunger of '95, but to me that was the year that everything came together. They were just firing on all cylinders. Every aspect of their sound was represented well.

On a side note, the only LT from '02 is the relatively lackluster GGP show, right? And there's The Gorge set (that was '02, right?). They need to get a couple of standouts from that tour out.
