ABOUT THE 08.09.08 ALPINE VALLEY SHOW
Live Trax Vol. 15 is a show whose setlist speaks entirely for itself. One of the most fan-requested shows for live release, the show features a superb progression of songs. Highlights of the show are numerous, from Dancing Nancies (played rarely as opener), Halloween>Water into Wine and Spoon, a definitive surprise of the evening, making its return after a 5-year hiatus. Stefan’s bass opening of Crush is memorable as is the fluid double encore of Don’t Drink The Water into Two Step. DMB played a couple of covers for the crowd’s pleasure, Pink Floyd’s Money and Talking Heads’ Burning Down the House. Live Trax 15 is available as a 3-CD set or download is free with the Pre-Order of Big Whiskey and the GrooGrux King. Due to production limitations, Live Trax 15 may only be available as a free bonus for a limited time so Pre-Order early to insure your copy!

DMBAlmanac Notes
DMB management has officially announced that Live Trax Volume 15 will be from August 9, 2008 at Alpine Valley Music Theatre in East Troy, Wisconsin. This release will packaged for free with website preorders of the band's new album Big Whiskey and the GrooGrux King that will be released on June 2, 2009.

This is the first time so far that a full Live Trax release has repeated venues; Live Trax 8 also hailed from Alpine Valley. Live Trax 6 and Live Trax 9 both contained multiple shows from the same venue. Outside of the Live Trax series, Red Rocks has also has multiple releases from 1995 and 2005. This is also the 4th show released from the Summer 2008 tour.

This show contains the most music of any full band show. Eliminating time between songs and encore, the band played two hours and fifty-two minutes of music. The two shows on record that contained more music are 12.22.03 at AllState Arena (two hours and fifty-three minutes) and 1.16.04 at Oakland Arena (three hours and one minute), both Dave and Friends shows. It is possible, though unlikely, that an undocumented show from the early years of the band may have contained more music.

The entire show features guests Tim Reynolds on electric guitar, Rashawn Ross on trumpet, and Jeff Coffin filling in on saxophones for the injured Leroi Moore.

The show begins with a rare Dancing Nancies opener. This is only the third time since 1995 that it opened a show, the second being on 8.27.00 (Live Trax volume 3); interestingly, both these two shows followed with common opener Seek Up in the second slot.

Other highlights include the liberation of Spoon which had not been played since 9.14.03, a total of 1791 days - good enough for 7th place on the list of longest absences before a return. It also was the first Anyone Seen the Bridge? » Too Much (fake) » Halloween. Halloween became the 4th of 5 songs that have come out of the Too Much fake so far. Other songs include (debut): Ants Marching (7.9.99), Tripping Billies (7.29.08), Stay (Wasting Time) (7.30.08) and Lie In Our Graves (8.10.08).

As far as rare released songs are concerned, two cover songs, Pink Floyd's Money and Talking Heads's Burning Down the House, are being released for the first time. This is only the only second release for Spoon and it is the first full show release where it was played. The previous version was on a compilation bonus disc packaged with The Central Park Concert. This is the third release for Water Into Wine, but the first one released after it was expanded at the end of July 2008. It is worth mentioning that this is the 8th live release for Halloween, a song considered fairly uncommon to see at shows. Amazing that this is more times than nearly 40 other songs released on proper DMB albums from Remember Two Things all the way up to Stand Up. On the other end of the spectrum, Ants Marching becomes the first song with 30 released live versions.

i'm guessing they put a really cool shirt with this, but only if you actually purchase live trax 15. if you get it free with the album, you won't have the choice for the shirt. or something stupid like that.

but i could care less because this was a great show and i'm looking forward to so so much of it.

if they'd just release night two as well, they'll have my entire 2008 covered (busch, alpine)!!!

I think we could see more of Alpine N2. We already got Tripping Billies. Certrain shows seem to get a lot of random tracks released.

I hope the shirt isn't tempting enough to make me want to buy this. As I'm fine with just getting it free in the pre-order.

Oh the choices were bad (LT13 was dictated by venue, no idea what they were thinking with Mile High, and LT14 was a special case) because there were better '08 shows, but I still find these shows to be better than the majority of material released from '07 (or '06 for that matter).

Either way, this release should easily be better than most of the stuff they've released from recent years.

I went to 16 shows last summer, and was actually at Mile High. It was easily the worst show out of all the ones I attended. I have no idea why they thought it would make a good release. LT13 was like a week into the tour. Solid release, but it doesn't represent what the tour was about IMO.

LT14 would have never been released if it wasn't Roi's last show. Bottom line if you don't enjoy LT15. Then 2008 wasn't the tour for you. This weekend at Alpine were the two best shows I've ever seen.

Tim really makes this band take it up a notch, and I would much rather have 4 more 2008 releases than something from 2007. The Band is pretty much doing what we asked or talked about awhile ago, so how can we be pissed?

Live Trax is geared for the casual, radio or hardcore fan, and DMB Live is definitely geared toward the Hardcore fan who must have a specific show from the past.

well yeah, obviously I would too. But this actually ends up being mailed to us and not being a code, then a free Live Trax or any Live Trax is going to be new. Hopefully they get a show or two up for us on DMBlive before this comes out.

Which is what? I'm not being a dick, I just am not sure what we asked for.

In all fairness that is not how LiveTrax started. If DMBLive provides classic DMB then that is cool (even though they are just straight boards and not mixed), but I would have liked to see an update to that site before now...or whenever they do it again.

I'm pretty sure the talk has been how the band should make all their shows available for sale ala how Phish does, or UM. This gives any fan, not just the hardcore, the ability to get whatever show they want, not just what is a consensus favorite by the Warehouse, or whoever selects the LT's. I have a feeling DMB Live will be something similar to this concept, not every show, but classic DMB like you talked about. It would be nice though, I agree, if they would release another statement, they have been really dragging their feet on information about this project.

You're right about that it's not important to me on the venue perse....but not all the best shows come from Alpine.
I never claimed that was the case. They probably wanted a show with the new lineup to release with the album. So if they were going to do 2008. Alpine was probably the way to go. I mean this release gives us a lot of what we wanted from this year.

Chances are older releases will all be via DMBLive. I'm sure the newer LiveTrax probably sell better. In fact of all the 2008 releases. LT15 is the only one they're billing as having a fan demand for. So in that regard it's a great thing. Because that's what the LT series was suppose to be about in the first place.

I kind of agree. I was at Alpine and SPAC last year. Performance wise the band was just in another place during that early August run. Though I still really want to see SPAC N2 to get released. It's more for #40 and Shotgun as opposed to any specific performance. There's just more to love about both nights of Alpine then there would be SPAC N2.

Honestly the songs that people ballwash the most aren't even my favorite parts of '08. I was just a fan of the new lineup, whether it was with Roi or Jeff, and the fresh take they put on familiar stuff. I am also a fan of the covers they played last year. I think DMBLive should continue to be older classic shows. The thing with DMBLive is that it's allowing us to get D&T and Dave solo shows, and who knows, maybe we could see more D&F's shows released(come on 12/19/03!). LT can still be used for heavily promoted shows and/or recent performances like this one for example.

My only issue with this is DMBLive stuff (so far) hasn't been mixed the way LTs have been. Good older shows deserve the same TLC.

That doesn't stop them from releasing remastered old shows on DMBLive in the future though. If they do that then I'm all for your plan.

Honestly the songs that people ballwash the most aren't even my favorite parts of '08. I was just a fan of the new lineup, whether it was with Roi or Jeff, and the fresh take they put on familiar stuff. I am also a fan of the covers they played last year. I think Tim was also more in synch with the band last year then he was in '98, though some might find that to be sacrilege.

Fair enough, I do like some of that fresh energy as well. I have no problem with covers and some of them were cool, but I feel like they got played a lot, maybe that is just perception though as I didn't really setlist watch last year.

I think they need to just release epic shows on DMB Live and leave the LT to special promo shows.

Its too bad that it started as a way to release classics and became flavor of the tour. Ah well, as long as they give those of us that love them some way to get them...seems like DMBLive could provide more variety anyway.

I know very little, but what I do know is that it is continuing, they are busy getting the initial album promotion stuff done.

Its shocking they didn't think of DMB Live first with Phish and Umphreys implementing a similar system.

Well now is a busy time, but there was that good 3 months in there where I was hoping we'd see some more.

I hate to say "it was better than '05-'07" because that's a cop out, but it's also true. Debating on "best" or "better" never goes anywhere anyway. It was a good tour though so I'm OK with it getting multiple shows released. Worse tours have had a lot of shows released (4 from '05 and 4 from '07).

I also already had you covered on the DMBLive mixing point.

My only issue with this is DMBLive stuff (so far) hasn't been mixed the way LTs have been. Good older shows deserve the same TLC.

That doesn't stop them from releasing remastered old shows on DMBLive in the future though. If they do that then I'm all for your plan.

the only down side would be that it seems that DMBLive will be just straight boards and not mixed releases like the LT shows.

If you take a listen to 3/26/94, the sbd that we had for years and compare it to the one released for DMBlive, the DMBLive version is much brighter, same goes with the 4/22/93 show. The sbd that we had for years was very low and quiet, this was nice and upfront. I'm not sure what more you guys want. There's only so much you can do with those older SBD's until you start distorting the levels by too much tweaking.

saw that after I posted.

I guess I am thinking of later years. I've always felt that the early DSBDs that we have sound fine. Sure some are better than others, but by and large they are good. I am thinking when we start (if we start) getting into say 96 or 97 on...

Its not about wanting more or complaining, I'd just be curious to see how some of those boards end up sounding...compared to a mixed release that is.

There are probably some shows from the late '90s though that they could do a bang up mixing job on. Why settle for the staight up board in those cases?

Whatever, they're gonna do it the way they want to do it, and if it's a good show, I'll buy it regardless.

Who all was at these shows? Did you stay 30 minutes afterward singing Thank You? I was kinda bummed Dave didn't come out and give the crowd some props. Still a great time.
I was there. Both nights were superb. For Thank You, I was sitting about half way up in the pavillion center left, and Dave kicked the vollyball in our direction and there was a mob for it. We stayed for about 3-4 minutes after they left stage to see if they might come back, but people were still singing it as we got to our car.

Nice! I was upper-left pavilion. We stayed until they started kicking people out. I lost my voice the next day and had Thank You stuck in my head for weeks after that. Alpine '09 is going to glorious.

Hey, I'm not totally disagreeing with you here. If you're paying for something why not expect/want the best you could possibly get, right? I agree. But at the same time, this may be our best shot at getting certain shows, like some of those mid - '95 performances or fall '96. I won't mind settling for that. PLUS, you gotta remember...even some of the Live Trax mixes haven't been that great. So it really doesn't matter what format its released under, the mix could be good, great, awesome, or blah either way.

If I'm not mistaken,

"Live Trax 15 captures the group's August 9th, 2008 show at Alpine Valley Music Theatre in East Troy, WI, one of the most fan-requested shows for release from last year's summer tour."

means it is only one show being released.

so how do you explain the cover art.

Dirty Frank
04-16-2009, 08:36 PM
Cover art says 8.9 and 8.10. Thinking it was a mistake by RCA in the press-release. Kind of like how they tagged "Funny The Way It Is" as "Funny How It Is".
