That was the hope. But this isn't some hope for older shows since we've witnessed the type of show this series will normally receive.

FiddySpence
01-22-2010, 11:55 PM
right, i'm just saying it's probably a coincidence. they may have shows in mind they want to release from over the years of picking single songs from random shows for WH discs and such. but i don't think it's a plan to release full shows with single songs previously released from them.

Fan#41
01-23-2010, 12:02 AM
Wait I'm confused.

What I'm saying is that the crew has favorite shows and/or performances. Some of the WH5/8 performances probably come from the crew's favorite shows so it wouldn't be some surprise that we get more DMBLive shows that had single song performances on a WH5 disc or Bonus disc. I don't think anyone is claiming the WH releases are a mission statement as to what will be a future DMB release. But they're definitely and indication as to what shows/performances the crew love and enjoy and with that may one day release the whole show. I mean I think we have 2 or 3 single song performances from 4/20/02. I wouldn't be surprised if we get the whole show someday.

So far there's been what, 2? 12/8/98 (Wh5v1 #41) and 8/29/00 (Wh5v3 Minarets)? This would be the third? If that pattern keeps up then there are some shows we've caught glimpses of on Warehouse discs that I'd like to see released (12/3/98, 12/7/98, 9/10/00, 12/8/00, 12/21/02)

10.24.1996 AUSTIN, TX SHOW SELECTED AS NEXT DMBLIVE RELEASE - AVAILABLE FOR DOWNLOAD NOW
http://images.musictoday.com/stores/images/spacer.gif
1996 was an exceptional year for DMB with the hugely successful release of Crash; an extensive North American tour, a Europe tour and HORDE Festival run plus a performance at Jazz Fest, SNL and Letterman. DMB performed a great show at the University of Texas, Austin in October of that year which we've selected as the next DMBlive release. The setlist features a fairly even representation of Crash and Under the Table and Dreaming. Highlights include the #41 opener into Say Goodbye featuring beautiful flute work of LeRoi's. One of our favorite parts is Recently>Water Into Wine into Typical Situation. The Austin show features a solo acoustic double encore by Dave of Little Thing and All Along the Watchtower and represents the last time Dave performed Watchtower solo at a full band show. The entire show has been digitally mastered and is available in its entirety at DMBlive.com (http://clicks1.musictoday.com/cts/click?q=1;109791;3eHadZubd93aiHrE6z6xPWEdgwNqpQFZ).

The LIOG jam in fall '96 is very short and much more mellow and basic on Boyd's part.

The Typical jam is closer to the '94 style jam, but 'Roi is on flute and it's lengthened out a bit more.

I'm not embellishing when I say moments like Roi coming in after his flute solo make me remember why I love(d) this band.

Their sound back then was so smooth yet so raw.

I love what Boyd used to do during Graves, kind of this droning solo thing. It peaked at Cow Palace when Dave started singing over it.

Boyd does sound stellar. That's why I have a hard time understanding - while most of the band continued to grow as musicians and improve their performance (for the most part), Boyd seems, imo, to have gotten worse from a live performance standpoint. Too bad

agree. i really like these earlier versions of Crash.

i remember when i was tape trading, i used to get so many 93/94 shows... when i got some from 95/96 i was a bit annoyed how they changed the jam in Jimi Thing. but it grew on me. listening to this today brought back some good memories.

a nice choice - let's hope they stick to these 95/96/97(!)/98 shows.

Yep, and there were even spotty shows in '96. LT4 (4/30/96) is not a good show in my opinion. I mean it was a fun listen when it was released but there are maybe two worthwhile performances throughout the show. I mean it's an important show for obvious reasons but stacked up against shows for the rest of the year, even something like 5/11/96 which was just over a week later are much better shows.

Wow, had no idea this was out. I can't believe I heard about it from Ants:

Also, in case you missed it, DMBLive released a new show, 10.24.96 from Austin, Texas. This show is the first multi-track show to be released in the DMBLive series. That's a good thing, mainly because it leads one to believe that if they are willing to release a multi-track recordings from full band show now, surely they'll release more "soon". As with all DMBLive releases, the shows are digitally mastered, which means it's not just dumped into FLAC or MP3, but rather the levels are balanced for each track to make the recording sound equalized.

WTF does multi-tracking recording mean?

brian3641
03-08-2010, 09:48 PM
From Wiki:

Multitrack recording (also known as multitracking or just tracking for short) is a method of sound recording that allows for the separate recording of multiple sound sources to create a cohesive whole.

Yeah, that has been my main complaint about DMBLive in general compared to the retail live albums, most notably the older ones like Red Rocks and Listener Supported. Many of these just sound like nicely mastered versions of DSBDs. In some cases, that's nice, but I would prefer it if they sounded like real live albums.

I'd take no crowd over the artificially inseminated crowds of the commercial releases any day of the week. This comes across as much more authentic and not as screwed with as we've seen with other mixes. That, of course, is just me though.

Yeah, 0 crowd noise bugs me. I mean, that's part of the reason for a release, to get that feeling of the show being performed live. 8/27/00 is a good example. Incredible show, love the way it sounds, but the lack of crowd noise makes the release almost meaningless.

Mersh
03-29-2010, 08:43 PM
Lack of crowd noise never really bothers me. If the performances are good I don't really care. Would it be nice? Sure, but no big deal.

Fan#41
03-29-2010, 09:00 PM
The performances by themselves are great but the one important element of what drives those performances is the fact they're performed in front of a live audience. What's the purpose of releasing a show if the "show" element is almost non-existent?

I mean live releases used to be about showcasing a band or artist's performance and energy spawned by an audience, thus creating those great moments on stage. But if the audience is barely heard in a mix then it's almost like hearing redone studio cuts and that's not the point of releasing live shows, imo.

batleon
03-29-2010, 09:32 PM
I get what Mersh is saying. Would it be better if the crowd was mixed in better? Absolutely. I can still enjoy this source though.

Besides, Mersh is coming from years of listening to livephish.com releases where the crowd is barely mixed in, so he gets a pass.

Listened to this one tonight for the first time since it was released, basically. Forgot how good it was. Not a classic, but I won't wait five-plus years before I listen again.

I love the encore, strange as it is for just Dave to come out for two songs -- and one of them be an unreleased (and terrific) Little Thing. For lack of a better analogy, what Halloween is on Luther, Watchtower is here. Short, fiery as HELL, Dave's hungry growl at its best. The Chet sounds and cuts so good underneath his furious vocals to close out the show.
