Dave Matthews Band's Live Trax Volume 17 is now available for Pre-Order. For the 17th release in the DMB Live Trax series, we chose the Shoreline show from 1997 which is also the first release from that year. This was the band's first headlining performance at Shoreline Amphitheatre.

Highlights of the summer 97 Shoreline show include the debut release of Leave Me Praying (which later evolves into Don't Drink the Water) and the cover of Daniel Lanois' For The Beauty of Wynona featuring Los Lobos' Steve Berlin on sax and David Hidalgo on electric guitar. Jimi Thing features remarkable horn play by LeRoi and Steve Berlin in a musical conversation with Carter's drums. Hidalgo's guitar solo in Lie In Our Graves is also worth mention, lending a special sweetness to the song.

We are also offering a couple of bundles with the Live Trax Vol. 17 Pre-Order:

• Live Trax volume 17 with 100% ringspun cotton unisex tee in Smoke featuring a graphic designed to commemorate the 1997 Shoreline show. Available in sizes S-3XL.

• Live Trax volume 17 with volumes 10-16 for a Special Pre-Order Only Price.

Can one of you old timers summarize the summer of 1997 tour?

It was the shortest tour the band ever played. One thing people forget about DMB is that even though they call a lot of shots, they didn't call all of them. They still had a contract with RCA, and after the major success of Crash in 1996 and the beginning of 1997, there was a lot of pressure by RCA to get the band back in the studio which is part of the reason why '97 tour was so short.

Sets didn't vary, and when they did, it wasn't much of a stretch to what had been seen before. Performance-wise however...great shows from the beginning of June to the end of July, Popper, Flecktones, Los Lobos, great guests. Nancies was becoming a much heavier song with more drive and energy and although he had a few flubs in '96 and here in '97, this was the last tour before Boyd's downfall began in 1998.

It still hasn't been confirmed as to why it was done, but #41 being played on Letterman in early June showed the band still took some chances, and it paid off. I'm a huge fan of the Flecktones run but the end of June holds some truly great shows only pushed and held up with great energy by the crowds which can be heard on the recordings.

I remember thinking it was strange. #41 did have a radio edit and it was said that it was slated to be a single after Billies but enough time had passed and I think RCA was looking to cash in on the future of DMB at that point vs. trying to push more of what was released over a year earlier. Who knows really but it was just really awesome to see them tighten it up so much in a week where Bela and Jeff were dominating the song. Heck, maybe the band was inspired by those Bela/Jeff guest versions enough to say 'fuck it' and play it for Letterman.

From a pure Say Goodbye stand point I would pick 7/7. That version is dirty and Carter has probably his best solo of the tour. My personal favorite show in general from that run (7/3 - 7/11) is 7/10. But honestly I have no knock on this show whatsoever. I don't even feel right saying I would prefer anything else. I really hoped that when they got to this tour it wouldn't be from the Flecktone phase, but I realistically didn't think it would happen. I think there's a good chance this will be the only 97 we get for a little while, it really means something to me to get a Leave Me Praying that has serious punch. It takes until after the Flecktones left to start getting some versions that I really love. I have v7 and some other tracks for Bela. What I don't have is a gangster version of LMP. For now.

Yeah it's one tour where we would all benefit from 2 releases. We mentioned on the almanac write up that this tour really had 2 distinct phases unlike any other I think, especially one that doesn't have a huge gap or lasts 5 months. I respect the desire for the 'Tones show, it worked out for me this time. For me, I know it's not the most common opinion, they're 7 for their last 7 on Live Traxes (keep in mind it was my Little Thing sign at 16, so that one is personal). They didn't come out in the order I wanted or necessarily are specific shows I'm looking for, but I've been on board with either the importance or the quality of everything going to the Great Portuguese Abortion of 2007.

I don't know anything about this show, anyone heard it before?

I wasn't there, but talked to someone who went to it. He was on the lawn and said he saw three mexicans on the lawn. They were there for Los Lobos and were having a great time. When DMB hit the stage they sat down and played cards through the entire DMB set. He was pissed. I'm guessing he enjoyed the show though. Wish I was at this show. My first DMB show ever was at the SHoreline in 1998. Good to see my home venue get some love. Also glad to see 1997 get some love. That was about the time I fell in love with DMB.

not my first choice. but i'll take it. Like i read, i dont think any show from this tour that had bela fleck or any of the flecktones was considered for live trax 17. also add the fact that a few of those shows that we wanted already have release from that venue.

I was thinking that if they were gonna put any 97 show out it would be 7.5.97 before any. I mean that whole show is just one run, and its the 5 members, no guests. And after Typical Situation was release for the Download for Haiti thing, i thought 7.5 would be the next live trax

1991
1992
Summer/Int'l '96
Spring/Summer '98
Fall '00
Spring '02
Fall '02
VFC '04
Fall '05 (not that anyone wants this)
South America '08
Spring '09

Then throw in D+T and D+F

D+T '97
D+T '99
D+F '03

Still plenty of areas left to be explored by LT/DMBLive. Did I forget anything?

So with this release we're filling a big hole in time for releases. But there are still some areas we are missing:

1991 - Anything would be cool
1992 - Something from Trax, just for history's sake
Summer/Int'l '96 - 6.11
Spring/Summer '98 - Something from late May or early June
Fall '00 - 12.13 is probably the best show, but we have a SBD of that so let's say 12.12
Spring '02 - 4.4 or 4.7, and I'm surprised they haven't released one of these already
Fall '02 - 12.21 I guess, but 12.20 would be fine too
VFC '04 - Any. They're all good
Fall '05 (not that anyone wants this) - I'd take one if it meant we got a post-2000 Minarets. 12.13 hits pretty much all the high points, and no Dreamgirl to boot
South America '08 - No tapes of these, so any is fine
Spring '09 - 5.9 is my pick

Then throw in D+T and D+F

D+T '97 - Nearly anything will do
D+T '99 - Ditto
D+F '03 - 12.20 or 12.22

Still plenty of areas left to be explored by LT/DMBLive. Did I forget anything?

the one thing about beauty that bothers me is that dave almost always mumbles over or screws up the opening. It was years before I realized what the lyrics were. I actually like when he sings this:

The Ingets Are Burning Red
I'm Working Time & A Half
Tomorrow I'll Stay In Bed
What A Life I Lead
What A Laugh

Laugh In My Face Why Don't You?
Laugh With The Rest
I Know It Well
I Tripped & Then I Fell For
The Beauty of Wynona

But, those are not correct (or I don't think they are, anyway).

Besides the few incredible lengthy LIOG Boyd solos (8/29/00 etc), my favorites are those short solos Boyd would do in '96. I really think it culminated at the Cow Palace with Dave improvising over that beautiful droning thing Boyd used to do.

Not to turn this into a Boyd bash at all, but his sound alone, nevermind the notes he was playing, but Boyd's sound used to be so full and so powerful. I don't know how or why it became so thin and shrill.

I think a lot of it had to do with the effects he started using, especially in '98. He also seemed to play a lot better when the band was playing at a faster pace. When things started slowing down a bit, he just fell all over the place. When Lillywhite mentioned how frustrating it was working with him in the studio, he basically summed up Boyd's playing from 1997 to now, saying how one moment he would play an amazing piece, then the next 12 takes would be horrid, then play another fantastic solo/arrangement.

I remember making a thread years ago about Boyd the musician vs. Boyd the spectacle. In '98 when his downfall was clearly being heard, that's when the whole running around the stage thing began. He had always been a visual player and an energetic stage presence, but '98 was taken to a different level. At the time it was so awesome to see and really got ya jacked up watching him go up to the edge of the stage on the 6/21/98 Germany video during his solo on LIOG. But when you look back on it years later, they sounded horrible, and it almost seemed like Boyd completely ignored that fact and traded it in for the moment of some cheers as he pranced around on stage.

Makes sense - and '98 is exactly the right timing. You can hear his tone just being thrown out the window. I think it's most apparent on live releases. What doesn't make sense is why anyone would choose to keep going with it. There's zero denying that regardless of technique or ability, his violin sounded leaps and bounds better up until '96 than it did afterwards.

would anyone say boyd had a bit of a return to form for some of 2009, especially early on. i thought he was pretty damn great in charllotesville...he was more reserved and focused. i recall threads in which people thought he was "disinterested" though...

Fan#41
04-08-2010, 09:48 PM
Well there's no denying 1998 and 1999 were his worst years. He made a tremendous comeback in 2000. He still had a few iffy moments that summer but he also gave some of his most memorable performances, especially in late August and mid September that year(2000). He sorta fell off the wagon in 2001 and has slowly made strides to slow things down and focus more since then. Of course, from 2001 to now, he's also had some really rough moments, beginning of the 2003 tour was probably the most infamous. But yeah I'd say the last few years he's had some strong performances.

Yeah I think his stage presence is more subdued now, especially since Roi passed, and that's perfectly understandable. But as far as his playing is concerned, I agree, the last few tours he's been really focused and has taken his time building a solo and structure.

that droning and just sawing away at a couple notes over and over and over is one of the biggest flaws he has as a musician.

But as far as his playing is concerned, I agree, the last few tours he's been really focused and has taken his time building a solo and structure.

i don't know about "last few years". he was pretty god damned terrible in '08, made some big improvement in '09, and has seemed to slip back again this year. it's just the same old thing. i can't get excited anymore about a good few months from him when we all know he's just gonna fuck up another tour in a year or two.

Actually, it sounded fantastic in 1997, especially on performances like Seek Up on 6/13/97. Boyd just laid down this simple foundation and Bela put this layer ontop of it and it was a gorgeous outro. Boyd wasn't perfect in 1997 but he most certainly wasn't sawing away. You're thinking of 1999.

Every year since 1998 he's had horrible shows and runs of shows, but some years are better than others and 2008 was not nearly as bad as 2003, 1998, 1999, 2001, 2005, etc... So...yeah like I said, the last few tours he's focused more than he has during other tours in the last 9 years.

I didn't really hear much more improvement from last year over '08. He just seemed to be getting more solo time last year vs. '08, that's pretty much what it boils down to.

Is a contributing factor his switch to electric violin in 1998? (I think it was 1998.)

getting more solo time in '09 was definitely part of it, but i distinctly remember him being awful for most of 2008 (and especially all the webcasts) and being just about spot on for a lot of '09. it was like night and day, and i remember it being discussed quite a bit as well so i know i'm at least not alone. his LIOG solo from Outside Lands i specifically remember being a rare "wow" moment from him.

i understand my examples are from webcasts and i've admitted before that i don't listen to AUD's much but i've checked out the entire spring '09 tour and a couple shows from the summer including the show i attended and the boyd from '08 compared to '09 was completely different.

why you felt the need to point out that boyd in 08 wasn't as bad as 03 i don't know, i never said that was the case.

Most definitely. I think that's why I love(d) 2000 so much. The Aud. recordings were amazing and Boyd started focusing again.

another reason why the 2nd half of 2000 for me is the pinnacle of DMB as a live band. Sure, Tim makes some songs unreal, but the band pus butch in late 2000 was just tight as hell. I probably caught one of the weaker summer 2000 sets at VA Beach, but i remember walking out of there ecstatic with how well they played.

For me, DMB is pretty much the only band that I buy the discs for. At this point, I just want a complete collection. I've actually had a lot of fun hunting down various discs (such as the import singles, etc).

And of course, at $7 bucks, this was obviously a steal.

i could never justify the economic investment in a complete collection of this band.
