Anyone find it strange that Water Into Wine (after not being played since 2008) gets played the day after this gets released. Now if this was another song (like Warehouse,Jimi and Ants all played 2/25 and 9/15) not worth warranting a post because those are DMB staples. But Water Into Wine, a song that took an 11 year absence, now I know it was teased a few times in 09 and once this year.

Listened to this last night while watching football. Such a fantastic show to have. DMB 1.0 right up at it's finest. I'm probably biased as these shows are what set me off, but everything here is just delightful. While the Recently > Water/Wine > Blue Water > Typical just causes you to close your eyes, kick back, & soak it in, the jimi thing preceeding it is pretty phenominal. So much better than what we have now imo. Dave's solo is fantastic. Maybe that type of playing wouldn't fit in 3.0, but I wish he'd give it a go again.

People talk about energy now, but these songs have so much more energy & authenticity. The granny in particular brings it. The hunger is palpable.

Jack
01-13-2013, 10:56 AM
Another thing is the little neat guitar things Dave is doing in songs like #36. There is obviously no room for stuff like that now. Not saying what they are doing now isn't 'better,' but it just makes me nostalgic for the space in the music I fell in love with. Even the beginning of ants has an 'airy' quality to it. Now everything is just so full.

Mitch
01-13-2013, 12:25 PM
I agree with everything you said, Jack. I love this one. This is the DMB I originally fell for (first show was just weeks later- 4/11/95) and Feb '95 is one of their all-time great months. These great little '95 sets make perfect DMBlive releases.

No. I listen to a lot of, & enjoy the hell out of 3.0. In fact, if I'm in the car it's usually all recent stuff or older d&t (until I find a way to have 600gb of music with me in my car). That's why it is so much more noticable when I listen to sometching old.

I am a fan of all of it, but this stuff just gets me on a level the new stuff doesn't. As we've talked about, there is a passion in the early days that Dave, through only the fault of time, is not able to harness anymore. You can't sing #41 597 times & still make it as powerful as it was the first hundred times. And, unfortunately, his present day lyrical ability doesn't draw the passion from me that it used to.

So, if us reminiscing about what made us fall I'm love with DMB just rips your shit apart, just steer clear of this forum or deal with it. We are here to bullshit & shoot the shit about something we love that the 3 dimensional people in our lives don't want to hear about.

yeah because i'm complaining about people praising 90's DMB :rolleyes

you know damn well that's not this is about. 90's DMB is my favorite too and it's what i initially fell in love with. but i'm able to listen and appreciate it without thinking "man it really grinds my gears they don't sound like this anymore!" i love both versions of the band so it's annoying as fuck to have you guys simultaneously praising old DMB - which again i also enjoy - while throwing current DMB under the bus

Well first of all you don't love 90's DMB. You only like about 4 years of the 90's DMB. You constantly say how you can't listen to stuff from '92 and '93 because of Dave's voice and you've said everything from 1994 is repetitive and just the other week you mentioned that you don't care that much for the '99 tour. So, by that, you like 4 years of the 90's era, then add that to the fact that you're always saying how the Butch era was so dreadful so that's 2000 to 2007. So in essence from what anyone can gather you really like DMB pre-2008 for about....4 years. Now you can come back and say this and that and give examples of how that's wrong but these are things you've actually said, not just the impression someone might get. Guys like Jack and others, myself included, enjoy every era of this band, from '92 to now. But when you listen to older DMB there things that you miss, things that have you remember how great and unique everything was. That doesn't mean today's DMB sucks but it means in my eyes and ears, there was something unique and special and hungry and that's what I loved and that's what gave the music power. It wasn't an electric guitar, it wasn't the lights and massive sound. But anyone who mentions that seems to bring a rain cloud over your happy day and you get all pissy. Deal with it. Just like you can't listen to DMB from the early days because of Dave's voice, people can just as easily say they notice things missing from current DMB that made us fall in love with them. That' doesn't mean it's all a lost cause or some silly shit, it's just a small observation.

FiddySpence
01-13-2013, 02:20 PM
the only part of 90's DMB i don't care for is the peter greiser era which is, what, 2 years?

and find those posts where i said i don't like 1994 and 1999. i don't remember saying that. if you want to claim i did, then prove it. i will gladly concede

but i'll tell you right now that i enjoy 1993-1999 more than any other version of DMB. i just happen to also really like what they do now for different reasons. i don't feel the need to always be pitting the two against each other.

Listen to this show. Lots of nice stuff from Boyd, which is what makes his shell on stage in 2012 so much more maddening. They should tour with the five piece and just let Boyd either figure it out or embarrass the shit out of himself on stage every night. Send him a message.

This show is one of my favorites from the early days. It just doesn't get more classic then this one :upyours

the only part of 90's DMB i don't care for is the peter greiser era which is, what, 2 years?

and find those posts where i said i don't like 1994 and 1999. i don't remember saying that. if you want to claim i did, then prove it. i will gladly concede

but i'll tell you right now that i enjoy 1993-1999 more than any other version of DMB. i just happen to also really like what they do now for different reasons. i don't feel the need to always be pitting the two against each other.

I honestly don't have the combative energy like I used to for searching old posts for "proof". Maybe you were just baiting someone who was saying they don't like current DMB, who knows, but you did say those things. So I just took them at face value.

And I never insinuated I was better than you or anyone else. And I never will. if that's how you take it, then I can't do anything about it. And really, the only times you and I have exchanging conversations is about 3 topics, DMB, Comedy, and Hip-Hop. Three things I really love and enjoy talking about. And I rarely post about anything else on here so when I talk about those things I like to get detailed and deep into the topics. I'm well aware that stating historical DMB shit comes off as condescending like I think I know more than the person I'm talking to, but that's not the case. It's to back up MY view and my opinion on the topic and to further the discussion along instead of stopping it dead in its tracks with "whatever" comments. But over the years I've found that by talking about certain topics whether it be tape trading or something else other people feel threatened because they don't relate and then throw around some idea that the person bringing it up is being condescending or whatever.

And just because your posts are ufck-influenced doesn't mean it automatically means you own up to anything. It's easy to take that stance and bob-and-weave in and out of conversations and then claim deniabiltiy when you're tired of continuing the conversation by pointing out the joking and silly comments saying that's all everything is.

are you guys physically incapable of listening to an old show and just enjoying it for what it is without shitting on the way DMB is now.

can you not get all butt hurt when people compare different eras of DMB? Especially in this case which was pretty inoffensive.

Listening to this one for the first time, and I'm only through LIOG, but I just had to comment: This LIOG is spectacular!

I don't defend picks, I don't like this pick. I get irrationally irritated by overly dramatic hyperbole. I'm working on it, though.

:upyours February 1995 was an incredible month. I know it's cliche, but 1995 was amazing from 1/1/95-12/31/95.

8/20 would be great. And selfishly I'd like 4/11, only b/c it was my first show.
