Venue Information

John Paul Jones Arena, or JPJ, opened for the 20062007 NCAA Division I basketball season and is located at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, Virginia. It has seating for 14,593 fans, nearly twice the capacity of 8,457 at Virginia's previous facility, University Hall.
The design features pergolas on the outside to tie in the design with Scott Stadium, UVA's football facility. This style is known as Jeffersonian architecture, reminiscent of the many buildings designed by Thomas Jefferson on UVa's grounds and nearby.
The arena is not named after the American naval hero, rather it is named in honor of the father of Paul Tudor Jones, who donated $35 million for the construction of the arena. He earned a B.A. in Economics from the University in 1976. His father, John Paul Jones, is a 1948 graduate of the University of Virginia School of Law.

The arena's first event was Cirque du Soleil's Delirium on Tuesday, August 1, 2006, but the official Grand Opening event was a two-night tour-ending stand by Charlottesville natives Dave Matthews Band, September 2223, 2006. An "open house" event for the local community was conducted on July 22, 2006.

The pit sucked for the most part this summer, and unless you line up at like 2PM or earlier, you won't be on the rail.

Also, call me crazy, but I like to be able to leave my spot during the show to grab a beer/food or pee, etc. Good luck doing that in pit.

I've done the whole waiting thing and been on the rail. And yes, it's awesome to be up there. But the amount of fuckheads in GA is enough to seriously take away the enjoyment of the show for me.

Also, the GA Pits in Amphitheaters weren't quite as bad as an all out GA field. With the pits, you could hang in the back and still have an incredible view and not have be tense the whole time deflecting people "trying to get to their friends up front" ... "nah man I see him he's right there"

That's rough. I pricelined a hotel for Alpine this year, and I did make it for the entire weekend, but they only had me there for a night. I found this out after N1 when I returned to my room to find out that my key no longer worked. Yep, all my stuff was locked in and I wasn't able to get it. So I had to purchase additional nights and thankfully the hotel wasn't busy so I had no problem doing it and they hadn't cleaned out my room yet.

Then, an hour later I get a call and its the front desk guy apologizing up a storm because they had fucked up my reservation, and I had booked it correctly.

So, long story short, they could be wrong.

I'm going to call them tomorrow after court and figure out what the hell is going on. I was in a similar situation to this in the past, except I found out that they not only had fucked my reservation up, but they had also overbooked the hotel and now I didn't have a room for the last night of my trip. Had to cab it to the airport and sleep in the terminal that night. Fun times.

I also just booked a "backup" hotel for Fri & Sat -- god damn thing is 12 miles outside town, past the airport to the north. So much for stumbling back to the room after the show. :rant

I'm in . . . shitty seats, but I'm in.

Honestly, there isn't a shitty seat in the building. And I mean that.

No, but I fully expect the hype machine to be out of control leading up to saturday night

If any show has a shot, it'd be this. Either way, I expect a good one.

So i have as seating question for you guys -

My brother has seats in 303 row N and 301 row D (these are on the opposite isle from where you would want to be)

where would you rather sit?

As I had hoped, there were cancellations at hotels much closer to UVA. I got into the Hilton Garden Inn -- 5 miles away from JPJ, well within cabbing distance for the show.

Only one more day of work -- and two court dockets -- stands between me and this trip. Boo. Ya.

I have a single ticket in the 300s for sale for N2. Anyone interested?

Everyone make sure to catch Trombone Shorty at least one of the nights... they absolutely rocked tonight in Atlanta.

I also likely have a single 300s available for both N1 and N2. PMs if interested. I should know in the next hour or so if it's for sale.

Ive partied in Cville many times, so I figure the Shorty show is the best option over the bars.

Plus, bars will still be there Sat night...

I'm so ready for these shows. I should be tired from the drive, but I'm wide awake. I'm going into these two nights with such a level head. I'm just ready to enjoy this band at what could be my last shows for a while.

Bring them on.

Just checked in, getting psyched for these shows now!

On another note...

Anyone familiar with the area know a pub that opens early (10am) that shows the English Premier League games?
