I was at this show and it was really good. Like many shows this summer, though, the best part was the beginning run. PM and Two Step were great, too.

Night 2 would be a wiser choice than night 1 or a compilation of the 2. I actually had a blast at this show due to that opening run. Two Step was a face melter

Not bad but I don't think SPAC was a highlight this year, set or performance-wise. Tough call though

Easier to market "live in new york" than "live in saratoga springs" for the holiday shopping season.

You would think they would also release it on bluray/dvd. Did anyone mention any extra cameras that night? They are long overdue for a full band blu ray release.

jimijamarchtowr
09-25-2010, 03:16 PM
Didn't notice any extra camera crew there. Just a picture at the end with the band at the front of the stage, backs to the crowd, like the Giants Stadium 2000 poster.

YES!!! another show I attended will be released :lol

This wasn't near my top 10 (out of 77 total shows), but the performances were fun when I was there, from what I remember (I was soooo stoned :smoke) hangin in the GA.

Hopefully, this a 2CD + Bonus CD (with preorder). Lots of good stuff that Musictoday can do with 2010 live material if they put half a brain towards making some sweet-ass bonus selections :upyours

Is it for sure N2? I say its a compilation of both nights

captainbigeyedpig
09-25-2010, 04:12 PM
Eh. I think it's six one way, half a dozen the other. This setlist has some low points, at least for a release, but so does Wrigley. However, while I'd love to get that Seek Up, Warehouse, etc., I'd much prefer that Last Stop, Can't Stop, etc.

Can't Stop, while still hated by most fans, was leaps and bounds better than Blackjack.

Plus, not even one of the great LITHOG? Blah. I'm so tired of these good versions of songs I've been hearing for years. I love Warehouse as much as the next person, but c'mon. You played a bunch of new songs this tour, and brought back some long desired ones that we only have one or two versions of. Why not release those shows?

I don't know, I haven't heard the Citi Field show. But considering the setlists and other great shows this summer, including the shows close to the Citi Field shows, I'm a bit disappointed.

I'm assuming we'll see a bonus disc, as has been mentioned. But if the next Live Trax really is the Brazil show, then it's going to be a while before we hear a significant portion of the more interesting "rarities" throughout the summer.

Already, my interest is waning, which is terrible, since it's not official yet.

N2 wouldn't be a terrible choice, obviously not the best either. But the opening run will definitely be nice to have. Would be a little better if they had actually played So Right though, IMO.

Tomacco
09-25-2010, 05:07 PM
Didn't the band take a group shot together at the end of N2? This would explain that.
Could be a compilation, right? I don't think the whole show would fit on 2 discs.

Hopper
09-25-2010, 05:12 PM
I would really welcome a compilation, actually.

Tomacco
09-25-2010, 05:16 PM
I would really welcome a compilation, actually.

Yeah if done right it could be much better than just night 2. For example:

Disc 1:
Big Eyed Fish
Seven
Stay Or Leave
Lying in the Hands of God
Jimi Thing
Digging a Ditch
Little Red Bird
So Damn Lucky

Disc 2:
The Stone
Warehouse
Funny the Way It Is
Seek Up
Squirm
You Might Die Trying
Two Step
Shake Me Like a Monkey
Watchtower

Technically, isn't Citi not actually in NYC? Flushing?
I'm clinging to straws of hope that this ends up being 4/14/09 instead. :)

So they know what it's called and the release date, but they might be wrong about it being 2 discs?

And keep in mind if it is 2 disc, Lucca was 3 Discs and that show is only 24 minutes longer then N2

Hmm. Well, 9/10/05 is 2:26 and that's on 2 discs... CP is 2:38 and it's on three discs. I guess it kinda depends on if the two halves of the show can divide up evenly.

I'm still hoping they only repeated Seven and Shake Me to make sure they got a solid version down to choose for a compilation. Ideally I'm hoping it's a 2-disc compilation, and that they'll sell both shows through the WH. The more music the better.

I wish it were 4/14/09 but I doubt it. I think they'd advertise it as Live @ Madison Square Garden if it were a MSG show. I just hate that it'll be Citi Field because after all these years of huge NYC shows, Citi Field's were nowhere close to the best shows NYC has seen and we're gonna waste the "Live in New York City" title on this.

A compilation of performances from multiple years of NYC shows would really be awesome (even if it meant repeating a song or two from CP).

A NYC compilation would be amazing though, something like:

Disc 1:
Heartbeat Intro >
Rapunzel (12/2/98)
The Last Stop (12/3/98)
Crush (12/12/00)
Cortez the Killer (12/13/00)
You Never Know (5/28/02)
Everyday (5/29/02)
Warehouse (12/20/02)
Halloween (12/21/02)
Hello Again (5/9/05)

Disc 2:

Recently (12/9/05)
Minarets (12/10/05)
So Right (8/5/06)
Lie in Our Graves (8/6/06)
Spoon (9/10/08)
Raven (4/14/09)
#41 (6/1/09)
Big Eyed Fish (7/16/10)
Two Step (7/17/10)

I'm wondering this too - all that Amazon page says for sure is the show was in NYC (which for those outside of NYC could include just about any part of NY state and possibly New Jersey). It doesn't even show a year.

Let me clarify. What I meant was if Citi is Live in New York City, then that means they won't ever release another live NYC show, past or future, of better quality than Citi - and NYC shows are usually awesome. Citi Field was subpar by NYC show standards.

You are reading wayyyyy too much into this title.

Maybe. Well, LTs will still be possible, but from a marketing standpoint it seems unlikely they'd release another NYC show in stores again after naming an in-store release Live in New York City, at least not for a long time. Just my speculation, but who knows. The next NYC release would have to be a venue-specific title.

On another note, is this is the first venue-ambiguous release title since Live in Chicago?

Let me clarify. What I meant was if Citi is Live in New York City, then that means they won't ever release another live NYC show, past or future, of better quality than Citi - and NYC shows are usually awesome. Citi Field was subpar by NYC show standards.

pretty good show still.

It'll be nice to have an official with the new/old style Warehouse, Jeff owning The Stone, and what amounts to a great Seek Up with the overlapping Jeff/RR solos.

captainbigeyedpig

If the title DOES stay Live In New York, I really do hope it's a compilation of performances in NYC from over the years, as was earlier mentioned.

Just because they took a photo on night 2 at Citi THIS YEAR doesn't mean they won't put out a compilation including previous years.

However, while I'm HOPING to get a compilation of songs from over the years, at this moment I think we're looking at a compilation of songs from both nights at Citi. It just seems natural that the next official release would be from this 2010 tour, a tour most fans and band enjoyed.

The fact that it does just say Live In New York seems to be an indicator that it would be a compilation as opposed to a specific night.

But again, I know it seems "obvious" it's Citi-only peformances from this year, but one picture does not mean it couldn't encompass their career there. After all, if the plan is to include performances from over the years, it would make sense to get a good pic this year with the current lineup to go alone with the pics from other years, when the lineup was different.

Furthermore, whether the timing was done this way specifically or not, don't forget that the release of this album occurs three days before the first MSG show on the Winter tour.

Of course not. This is all just wishful thinking that maybe for once they can put out a live release with some friggin' creativity. The most creative live release we've seen was Europe 2009 and even that was pretty simple - 2 shows and a book. With the history this band has, I don't know why they're not using just a bit of creativity, like compilation DVDs or CDs based on venues, albums, guests, b-sides or fan votes/notoriety.

ThememanXX

Honestly we've gotten one disc samplers for a number of recent tours ('08, '07, '04, '03) on top of at least one full show from those years, so you would think they should have covered their bases. It's the actual show/song selections that have been hit or miss.

Do you mean emptier as in audience or sound-wise? I don't know anyone who bought a ticket because Tim was there (honestly, most people don't even know who Tim is except for fans on the boards). And if it's sound-wise, then the sound they had in the late 90's without Tim was much better than now. Jeff and Rashawn together can make up for Roi. So if that is emptier, then I'll take it. Even if Tim never took a solo again, the rest of what he adds would still warrant his presence. Take what he did with Hello Again, and The Last Stop. Pure genius. The guy is so fucking creative, it's insane. I don't understand how someone could listen to what he's coming up with and prefer not to have it. I'm exaggerating, of course, because I know everyone has their own preferences, and around here the word subtlety gets used a lot, but really, IMHO, fuck that... Tim singlehandedly drives the remaining creative sparks in this band right now. If he gets pushed out, it becomes Dave's screaming vs Jeff and Rashawn squealing.

I'm sorry, I'm not trying to make this a personal attack, at all, I just get fired up because I can't understand how people would want to take everything a guy like tim has been adding, and just throw it out the window.

they can't go back in time at this point. I still say that the latter half of summer 2000 produced my favorite sounding shows in the bands career, but that's not coming back. it's history. it's such a different animal now. and a large part of what they're doing sounds great.

...but that's just me (and maybe dissident).

"retarded" would be my word of choice.

I'm trying to remain calm and nice, but yeah, I'm losing my cool. I need to E-bear hug Tim right now and beg him never to leave this band.

What difference does it make, honestly? You lose so much more than you gain by getting rid of Tim.

as much as i want butch and jazzier sound back, you're right, you lose a lot more than you'd think taking tim out of the sound. can you imagine the BW songs without tim. it'd be a joke.

for me it's mainly the electric guitar. if tim left and they brought in a different guitar player i'd be very interested in that.

This is true. Seven is unplayable without Tim's presence.

See, I couldn't see anyone else "getting" their sound quite like Tim. I feel like he was misused on Big Whiskey, but he has been so good on all the other songs they have brought back.

Tim returning in 2008 was the biggest reason why I think it's the best tour of the decade.

what people magically want is a tour where DMB pretends to be 10 years younger, and plays nothing from Everyday on, except the really awesome unreleased songs, which, really? Chances of that happening are approximately bad. Even if they did that, it would be a total admission of being a nostalgia act, which would be totally awkward.

Tim makes bad songs sound better. Butch made bad songs sound worse. Therefor, I choose Tim, because bad songs will remain in rotation as long as they continue to tour.

As for the acoustic guitar... I don't know what the problem is: I can hear the acoustic parts that need to be heard, and that's all I need.

ehhhhh, not so much, there. the thing that impresses me about tim is that when they bring back a song he hasn't played on, or it's been over decade since he played on it, he always sounds like he's been playing it that way for years, if that makes sense. a different electric guitarist would probably fail in the sense that he would take awhile to do much beyond soloing. dave and tim have that connection that you can't replace with just anyone. the learning curve would be too steep, with the exception of a guy like Trey, and, not really a fan of that happening on a consistent basis, nor does it seem likely.

haha. he was good when he was still finding his way and playing like a true guest from 98-2000. it's the 2005-2007 era butch that was problematic.

Good point. Tim's presence in '08 made a number of Stand Up songs tolerable, and he made me a believer in YMDT (the reworked ending they came up with in '06 was doing absolutely nothing for me).

I liked Tim on the 2008 tour, and even last year since it was all BW. But I just got tired of him this tour. I prefer to hear the horns and Boyd, and you can't hear that with Tim up there. My favorite shows I've seen were in the mid/later 90's when it was just the 5. If they kept him but cut him back a little, that would be fine. And I've heard plenty of people say this at shows, so it's not just me.

that's the other thing that doesn't make sense: turn down the guy who's playing interesting music so we can hear Boyd sloppily mimic the melody of the song. no thanks. I'm all for hearing Boyd, when he creates something that serves the songs (or relearns great parts that he's ceased to play: see Big Eyed Fish). I want him to: it happens rarely, though.

I've rarely had problems hearing the horns, which is good, because I have appreciated the effort they put in to writing material for the songs, and always enjoyed hearing what they come up with.

lost touch with the fanbase? it seems you hate everything the band has done post 2000. you lost touch with the band long before you started to worry about whether or not you agree with what other fans like or dislike. what exactly do you expect when you follow a band that makes music you don't like?

i don't understand how people don't realize this. and this whole "dave doesn't play guitar" bullshit is so overblown. he doesn't play on parts of shake me, parts of blackjack, and most of sledgehammer. other than that he's playing what he always has it's just that tim is sometimes mixed louder.

that's exactly what would happen

i would lose all interest.

I think it's Dave playing acoustic through an effects pedal. As far as I know there's no guests on the LWS. But I like Tim playing it cause it gets closer to that sound. I love both versions of studio Busted Stuff, but I thought that was a great touch.
