Dave Matthews Band brought their multi-artist Caravan tour to four US cities this summer with the opening weekend taking place in Atlantic City, New Jersey June 24th-26th. DMB brought new life to Bader Field, a defunct airport space surrounded by the Intracoastal Waterway, only a short bridge away from the famous Atlantic City Boardwalk. The band hosted a 3-day multi-stage, multi-artist festival ending each day of music with a spectacular headline performance. One four letter word sums up the weekend perfectly: E-P-I-C and the show on the third night was nothing short of incredible. The band’s headlining concert on June 26th is now available for Pre-Order as a 2-CD set or digital download. All Pre-Orders will receive a 5-song bonus disc (Warehouse member store Pre-Orders receive 8-songs) of tracks selected from DMB’s night one and two shows in Atlantic City.

DMB pulled some great stuff out of their trick bag on the last night in AC with rarity (and previously unreleased) Kill the King, Seek Up into Warehouse, Dive In featuring a new musical intro and a first for the band with a cover of Sweet Emotion. The crowd went wild during the quadruple encore when DMB began playing Halloween after Carter’s snare drum intro to Ants Marching, launching back into Ants at the end of Halloween. DMB ended the show and an incredible weekend of music with the apropos Thank You Falletin Me Be Mice Elf Agin. The fans continued chanting the song as they exited the Caravan and walked over the bridge to the boardwalk. It's no exaggeration that this awesome set list is considered one of the best in the last 10 years!

*Please note: This item is available for pre-order.
Expected ship date is on or about December 9, 2011. (DM218COMBO)

Looking forward to hearing the full show. I have only listened to a few tracks here and there.

As for the bonus disc. I would like to see the thought process behind it. Why these songs? Seems like an odd choice of songs.

I'll talk about something else:

When are they going to stop trying to sell the "big" show of the year. The numbers were down with these horrible festivals and this band isn't as famous as they used to be. Sell music, music sells itself. That should be the new motto for the band. Sell hype, fuck hype.

I have a serious problem with this. HOW ON EARTH do they figure Sister is something people want to hear/have never heard live before.

2) It's always the same

3) I don't know a soul who likes it

I can brush the bonus disc aside - it's a bonus disc.

Very excited for this whole entire thing. These were my thoughts on it when I listened:

Seek up horn intro was pretty well done. Dave sounded pretty good vocally, and brought brought it home with a decent solo. Warehouse is such a perfect followup to such a nice opener - Ross has figured out how to lay a nice, subdued solo down.

This has to be one of the best WWYS in recent memory. Love Tim's fills in the verses that allow you to hear Dave's main riff. Coffin doesn't explode with any of his solos, which is always a plus. The horn solos are pretty perfect on this one, love how they come together in sync at the end. And then, Kill The King comes out of nowhere. Dave's lyrics in the beginning are well done, but I wish he still played the full riff (it doesn't sound like he does). Don't like how he does the "come on now now" instead of "yeah yeah". I have always liked this song - especially when it quiets down for the last chorus.

Pretty nice Granny and a good placement of LITHOG. Hands of God is the 1 BW song that I never want to see them ditch - Carter takes it to the next level almost every time. Real good set flow so far.

Ditch is a great song, and sounds really good with this lineup. And a random midset OSW now. I don't mind the new intro to OSW, but I think it only works as an opener. Midset just leaves me really wanting the original intro back.

Dive In was especially nice, and Raven sounded fine.

I definitely like how they broke up SMTS and Too Much with Sweet Emotion in the middle. Sweet Emotion is awesome...Pretty good Watchtower to close the set. I liked the horn interplay over Tim's solo. Very strong set overall. Real solid flow.

Effective contrast with Halloween following Some Devil. Quality encore...

All in all, a really good listen from start to finish. No duds in the set, and it just flows all the way through. Really good show - heck of an opening run.

I love the set. Performances I recall being great aside from Boyd who I'm pretty sure fudged up Too Much pretty bad, no?

But there is some amazing performances of classics (Seek Up, WWYS, Warehouse), great Big Whiskey choices (doesn't get better than LITHOG, and this is a unique Dive In from the previous ones we have), a new cover, some lesser-appreciated stuff like Ditch and Raven, and I think it's awesome we're getting Kill the King.

The only things I could do without are honestly Watchtower, Thank You, One Sweet World and Billies.

This is an incredible selection for release. I don't see how a bad bonus decreases the quality of this show. They already know that the hardcore will pick up this show, so they added choices for the casual fan to preorder it as well on the bonus disc.

No casual fan is going to order a show because of a bonus disc. That said, this bonus disc is pretty shitty, which is only worth mentioning because they literally could have picked any 8 songs from the first 2 nights and they went with these.

Probably not the best show they could have released from 2011, but certainly close and not a bad release at all.

We have about 10 copies of every song on that bonus disc. Most of them are Crash Into Me type songs, they sound the same every night. The only exception is Write A Song because they just busted it out last year, but we've already got that on the WH CD and Wrigley.

That was a really good Captain :( Also would love to hear Whiter Shade of Pale

Here's the thing, folks:

They're gonna put out shitty bonus discs here and there. Thing is, they put out a lot of material, both good and bad. We can bitch about this bonus being bad, but who's to say that we won't get the songs you guys seem to be clamoring for on subsequent releases. Either way, I think they've really over saturated the market and could care less about what they do at this point. I feel like I have all that I'll really need from these guys.

FiddySpence
11-11-2011, 01:55 AM
i guess i just think bitching about something that even has "bonus" in the title is really fucking selfish and just plays into the entitlement complex that this fan base has.

if they release a shitty show? by all means. i mean, i'm sure i'll think you're all overreacting because i just don't think it makes sense to get butthurt about DMB in general. but at least you'd be getting pissed about something you'd actually pay for.

yeah i get that. i'd be thrilled too if the bonus disc had better stuff on it, and i lol'd when i saw the selection so it's not like i think it should be ignored entirely. it just feels like immediately some people just wanted to talk about how shitty the bonus disc is rather than the release it's linked to which has arguably the strongest set of the tour.

granted, i'm probably not helping by talking about the people who are talking about the bonus disc. i realize it's hypocritical.

Hey, a Raven with Tim and Jeff! (I'll take it, even if Dave half-asses the guitar part)

actually kind of reminds me, in flow and random song selection, of SPAC 7/29/02. Just not necessarily what you would expect out of DMB.

I'm actually excited to give this a listen. Hope we get a nice mix.

They did the album intro to raven on this one too. The last few years they've been doing the acoustic intro with Dave starting the song himself. Good stuff!

It occurred to me though that Phish has a lot more stuff that fans want. They can afford to give some of it out for free because there's plenty more where that came from. Let's face it, DMB has less to give so they have to keep that stuff close to the vest.

I'll expand on that but only because the Phish haters in this thread brought it upon themselves this time - this year alone Phish gave away over 60 tracks of live music FREE (adds up to a lot of hours) and thats not including the hour of music they just gave away to promote the upcoming boxset release

Not to mention the high def videos of every single show they play

Hard to argue that that's not the way to treat a fanbase

Who gives a fuck what people want to talk about? (besides you, apparently).

The show is great, we've talked about it to death in the Caravan thread, there's not much more to be said once it's acknowledged which show is getting released. It's a good choice for release, and I'm excited about it.

That said, the bonus discs have been SOP for special releases going all the way back to Central Park, and WH/MT has been using them as incentive for fans to preorder the show from them and not just get it in a store (where it's going to be like $5-8 cheaper). Until now, the bonus discs have been ok to great, but this one is just a steaming pile of shit. It's like they intentionally went through and picked our last choices of songs from the first 2 nights. So what that people want to point that out?

You realize you're posting on a DMB message board in 2011, right? Apart from the 13 Caravan shows it's an 18 month off-season. At that point getting haughty about the details of the conversation is going a bit far if you ask me. :lol

Varied sets aside, a Mike's Song or Gin could sound completely different from one show to the next. With DMB if you've got one Jimi from a particular tour that's all you need, as the songs aren't that different from show to show, they tend to change more from tour to tour. That alone give Phish a much wider pool of worthwhile stuff to release.

Not to say DMB doesn't still have a ton of good stuff to put out there, I just think Phish has a lot more.

If you pre-order a commercial release from Music Today you're paying a higher price then you would in-store (plus their ridiculous shipping) so you'd think they'd give you a better incentive than a disc like this.

its weird bc it should be in the interest of management to put out a bonus disc that will sell more cds. perhaps the theory is that the on-the-fence-about-buying-this-release would be more motivated by this bonus disc tracklist as opposed to one with whiter shade of pale, etc...who knows. oh well

uhh, the people they are trying to sway with the bonus disc in the first place.

lets be honest, the people who they are trying to get to buy it from them are the fanboys who know damn well how to d/l something for free. I usually base buying in-store releases from them solely on the bonus material. I mean, there are like three types of fans 1) those that will buy anything the band puts out from the WH, 2) the casual fan who will pick it up if they happen to see it in the best buy sunday flyer and think, "oh, cool, I'll get that tuesday or 3) the fan who more or less buys everything they put out, might look for the lowest price, but if you tease them enough with the bonus disc, they'll spend the extra 8 bucks or whatever and get it from MT. I'm not going to complain about the bonus disc, but they didn't do their job here, and most likely someone like me will now buy it locally or just d/l it for free.

I don't think I would've been able to handle the awesomeness of an encore that's:

Some Devil
(Ants Marching) -->
Halloween -->
Ants Marching
Last Stop

Stuck with? They didn't intend to play Last Stop after Ants to begin with.

The original set had last stop/rapunzel. Craig was bringing the 12 on stage and dave waived him off to stay with the 6 for thank you. Even rapunzel wouldve elevated that encore, tho not quite as much as last stop would've!

I stand corrected, those were on the set before ants, not after. In any case i think you know what i mean...add either rapunzel or last stop in the encore and take out thank you, and you make a great show that much better!!

I agree. Still, it was nice getting Thank You tossed in for no reason. I'm still happy with how the encore turned out. I'm one of the rare ones that likes Thank You, however.

It will be available in stores. I just do standard shipping and then "acquire it elsewhere" to have it on (or before) release day.

yeah it did...was at both shows. but sure i saw craig holding 12-string at the end of ants in AC, making it at least seem like there had been a shot for last stop.

There is certainly no reason to pre-order to get this bonus disc. As has been said, it's awful. I will look to acquire the Squirm and Spaceman, though.

Maybe they felt since the setlist from this show was more "hardcore" they would make the bonus disc all the shit songs that would appease the "casuals."

Other than Satellite, there's no songs on there that are hit singles or that would appeal to the casuals. A few of them are unreleased; doubtful a casual fan would even know what they are.

yeah, plus a real "casual" fan isn't pre-ordering it anyway,, they're just picking it up when they see it at Best Buy, etc.

so, basically, there's still no reasonable explanation for how awful that bonus disc is :lol

and then an even more "casual" fan will just get it from a friend. Won't even know about the bonus disc.

So many levels of the casual fan...

It's possible that management/the band simply liked the songs picked for the bonus disc and didn't really give too much thought to rarity or previous releases. I'm sure they didn't give it much more thought beyond that. "Hey, Squirm is good! And so is You Might Die Trying! Put 'em on there"

I have every bonus or fan club disc they have ever put out with the exception the Big Apple. But, at this point it will be 'up until Big Apple' from now on. I've tried to pre-order this, it is just so bad. Paying double with shipping just can't be justified for this crap fest. It's frustrating because the release is so good & they left so much good filler on the table.
