The DMB Crew is particularly excited about the next Live Trax release. The July 14, 2010 Montage Mountain, Scranton, PA show is a true gem. The band really crushed it on stage delivering an over 3-hour performance!

The Montage Mountain show’s setlist draws from all different time frames and showcases some relatively new arrangements and jams. Grace is Gone features a country- tinged outro and You and Me has a nice Digging A Ditch tease intro. So Damn Lucky is a pretty epic jam and the horns reprise the Digging A Ditch melody again in the song. #41 is a definite highlight, clocking in at over 20 minutes with Two Step a close second at sixteen minutes. The spontaneous little jam before Pantala Naga Pampa > Rapunzel and the energetic Two Step both serve to illustrate what a great time the band members were having on stage that night.

I'm confused, Almanac has the song time at 2 hours and 50 minutes, how does this fit on two discs? Only reason I thought of this is because I remember seeing this show listed in the "longest shows ever" thread.

Not a bad choice, but nothing special. I knew at the time i should have gone to the next night (went to 7/13) when i saw the setlist, but nothing you can do about it now i guess.

You can't cut dead air from song time.

Also love that this SDL is on an upcoming Warehouse disc and an upcoming LT at the same time :lol

this is a solid show, and I'm all for them pumping out as many releases as possible, but with this being very similar to the released Citi Field show just a few days later, and me really wanting more 2002-2004 releases, I am not particularly excited.

this was, if i remember correctly, a show in 2010 generally regarded as one of the best. I'll admit I'm a bit surprised by the response here as well. I think it's a solid release.

The SDL overlap is less than great, but with that logic 12/8/1998 shouldn't have been released in full either.

13 of these 21 songs were released on the Citi release.

There are over 50 full show releases now. Overlap is going to be inevitable at this point. If the shows are good who cares.

This was considered a good 2010 show. It shouldn't be shit on just because Citi (a show that isn't as good) got released first.

Start disregarding the shitty releases and you won't care about overlap.

Start disregarding the shitty releases and you won't care about overlap.

:lol fair enough

batleon
04-30-2012, 03:40 PM
I just don't get the overlap argument. If we went by that nothing would ever get released. If it's a good show and it gets mixed well it'll be a good release no matter what's on the setlist.

If you don't want your umpteenth release of Tripping Billies then just don't buy it and wait for the next release. It's not like we don't get a bunch every year now.

raven
04-30-2012, 03:50 PM

batleon

I've been wanting another long Grace is Gone, we only have one (LT 6). Does this version have the hoedown?

ethaxton
04-30-2012, 04:20 PM
It's gonna come down to the mix on this one. That seems to be all I really care about anymore. We've got so many releases that the only deciding factor with me anymore seems to be which one sounds better.

batleon
04-30-2012, 04:23 PM
Seems like a lot of the stuff people were handpicking from Citi and the Citi bonus disc are all here in one show:

Stone opener
Warehouse with UTTAD intro
OSW with instrumental intro
Long jammy #41
Two Step closer
SDL with extended outro

plus Grace, Cry Freedom, LITHOG, Busted Stuff

LIOGwhat
04-30-2012, 04:30 PM
yeah i mean this doesn't stick out from any of the other 2010's really...but if you all had said great things about this show then good enough for me! i'll check it out for sure.

the real disconcerting thing for me is that it's a 2010. I became aware when SOMA was announced that no shows with Butch had been released since his departure. Is there any validity to the idea that we might not see anymore shows from his time with the band, or is this just an huge coincidence. There's so many great shows from 02-04, more 2000, etc etc and now it seems like everything has been from 95 or 08-present.

abw123
04-30-2012, 04:32 PM
If I was picking I would like to get Butch shows again because we haven't had anything released from those years (save LT 16) in forever. 1999 to 2006 is a long stretch. Subtract 2001 and 2005 obviously.

I'd like to get about 5 straight from those years.

I'll give it a listen, for sure -- it's not a terrible choice for a LT release, but it's also not a "Holy Shit!" release either.

If they're hell-bent on doing DMB 3.0 releaes -- maybe 7/12/08 or 7/26/08 so that we could get the Money >> Money (That's What I Want) as a live release. 7/12/08 also has another '08 Dreaming Tree, which I can't get enough of as far as live releases go.

The spontaneous little jam before Pantala Naga Pampa > Rapunzel (not included) illustrates what a great time the band members were having on stage that night.

The fact that they haven't given us a single live release with Butch since he left the band is hard to write off as a coincidence though. And I know he's been on WH discs but those are free.

We'll never know for sure though and I'm sure we'll get a release with Butch again at some point.

Those shows would be great, December 98 is choice. I would love to see a release of 10-31-98 with Greg Howard and Joshua Redman but Dec 98 would take a slight precedent over that one.
There are plenty of shows that they could release from 02-04 though that would be great additions to LT. I love Butch on some of the Two Steps from that era, he and Carter going at it with a little jazzy style is nice, kind of like CP but even better than that one. My favorite one I saw is 5-21-02, but one of the nights before at Shoreline would make for a better LT release.

batleon
05-10-2012, 10:50 AM
The weird thing is Jeff can do soulful playing, I think he's just feeding off the energy in this band right now. Another consequence of using Roi clips on the album and then having the current lineup perform it.

If anything it makes me really interested in what the new songs will be like since Jeff has been part of the creative process this time around.

See I like the sax riff in Seven, and I like the one at the beginning of Time Bomb. It's definitely different coming from Jeff, rather than Roi. But that's just the case with everything. I'm way over it. The way they fit makes them feel quite awkward, almost off beat or out of time. I love it when they take lines that are written in a certain time signature (4, 3, whatever) and then play them against the song's real time (3, 4, 6, w/e)

It's like the 4/4 beat against the 6/8 time in DIDO. Love that stuff. Classic DMB.

Thrawn
05-10-2012, 12:43 PM
^ You Never Know is full of that shit too. Not just changing time signatures between sections, but polyrhythms in the same section. The line "lying on the roof" for example counts in 4 over top of the guitar line in 6. Carter plays a lot of 4/4 backbeats too.

TwoStepN34

I like the studio version of Seven but don't care for it too much live. The main problem I have with the song in general is Dave's vocal delivery at the beginning. Just not a fan.Dave has improved quite a bit on that part compared to 09. Also, the music more than makes up for it for me. Ever since Europe 2010 the song is an absolute beast live. I could easily see it at every show. The funkiness as well as the variartions and subtleties that Carter and Tim add each time has me hooked.

I didn't know they were high watching TV when they came up with LITHOG, but it makes sense to me. The song has actually always had a bit of a trippy feel to it. The lyrics definitely invoke perceptual distortions and dream states.

weren't they supposedly doing the same thing for Squirm? watching Cannibal Holocaust and other snuff films?

Was all of that Cavallo's influence?

i don't really see how it would be. DMB is the only band that he's worked with that really comes close to "weird". it's not like he's sitting around smoking weed with Green Day and Paramore getting them to write tunes inspired by grotesque cult films.

That's a pretty big leap. Who's to say how weird any of the bands Cavallo has worked with are? I bet a lot of the band members are more eccentric than DMB. Even if you don't think their music shows it.

i think it's a much bigger stretch to think that little experiment/whatever it was in coming up with song ideas came from Cavallo than from DMB. i could totally see Dave or Stefan or any of them really deciding to do that.

the dude's in Green Day are fucking weird, but we're talking about how these bands approach songwriting and that just doesn't sound like them or most of the acts the dude works with.

i mean, i could easily be wrong, but that sounds like a very DMB thing to do so it seems weird to me that someone would just assume that was Cavallo's idea. i mean, come on, that's Dave through and through.

A decade after becoming a fan, I honestly still have no idea where to weigh in when it comes to Dave's drug usage. :lol

As a teenager, people always said "oh man, he's so hiiiigh!" when he would mumble his on-stage jibberish. I never believed it then and still don't now, though I wonder if and how much drugs do enter into his life.

Lots of weed and a liberal amount of alcohol. I'm sure he mixed in many other things in his prefamily days.

if i were to make a guess, the dude still smokes his fair share of weed (as i assume the entire band does) but i get the vibe that he doesn't drink as much as he used to.

obviously we know he did acid and i imagine a fair share of hallucinogens in general back in the day.

oh, and whatever the fuck him and trey were doing in 2003, but maybe Jack can answer that better.

Switch weed and alcohol around for current Dave

He owns a wine vineyard right? I think he drinks a lot of wine. And sometimes he mentions at shows how he got drunk the night before.

At Wrigley he said: "Last night I stumbled around the streets of Chicago, drunk as fuck" or something like that.

I think heroin in 2003

i get the vibe that he's just smoking tons of weed and drinking lots of like yuppie mineral tea and shit.
