LIVE TRAX 24: 2.8.97 Spartanburg Memorial Auditorium, Spartanburg, South Carolina

When selecting Live Trax 23, we realized that we had two Dave and Tim shows from the early days that were both so good they had to be released together. Live Trax 24 is a show from Spartanburg, SC in early 1997. During the show, Dave refers to a billboard displaying a message “Jesus is coming to a soul near you” in several songs: Two Step, never-before-played Dreamed I Killed God and What Will Become of Me. Highlights of the show include a rare Let You Down and Captain with some alternate lyrics. Little Thing and I’ll Back You Up are both rare treats in this setting. One of our favorite stretches of the show is Minarets>Dreamed I Killed God>Typical Situation.

Track List:

Disc 1:
1. Recently (Norwegian Wood, On Broadway)
2. Two Step
3. Jimi Thing (Angel/Sweet Leaf intro) > What Will Become of Me?
4. Granny
5. Lie In Our Graves (no reprise)
6. Christmas Song (Beatles 'Love' outro)
7. Proudest Monkey >
8. Satellite
9. Let You Down
10. So Much To Say
11. #41
12. Angel From Montgomery

Disc 2:
1. Say Goodbye
2. Dancing Nancies
3. Crash Into Me
4. Minarets >
5. Dreamed I Killed God >
6. Typical Situation
7. You Are My Sanity
8. Captain
9. Little Thing
10. Nature > Tripping Billies
11. I'll Back You Up
12. Ants Marching
Encore
13. Warehouse (wailing intro)

Pretty excited to have a properly mixed D&T captain from, arguably, its greatest period. Also I'm a bit surprised DIKG isn't getting more love. I'm not sure it is a complete idea, but I always thought it was one of Dave's most unique pieces.

I've always hated that D&T never do the love/baby jam on Granny. That makes the song for me.

There are quite a few around here who give DIKG it's due. So nice to see it here.

I still say the best d&t granny is 9/24/95 swathmore. The way dave does roi's part in the begining is awesome.

Does anyone know what solo song Tim played? Dmbalmanac lists Letting Go, and antsmarching/the preorder list You Are My Sanity. Im going to check my copy today for sure...

I'm hoping its Letting Go, while both are two of my favorites of Tims, RCMH '07 Sanity is perfect.

I'm pretty sure the cover is from the same performance as the picture from the back of Luther College. If so, that makes me inclined to believe the theory that the Storytellers picture was used on the '96 due to a lack of pictures. It has been awhile, but didn't that acoustic magazine interview in '99 mention that the crew for these tours was extremely small?

I really wish they offered a poster of this cover for the preorder....

There is that phenomenal SBD of 2.5.99, though. That scratches the '99 itch, IMO. Of course the Coluzzi tapes are great, too. These '96 and '97 releases are perfect.

The main line at the begining after dave opens the song. A part that d&t never play when they perform it normally.

2-5 is 100% a sbd. It is the only one that is out. The easest way to tell if it's a straight sbd feed is dave's vocal mic gets shut off during tim's solos. You can hear that happen at the begining, it come back on at the end & no crowd during his solos.

buddha05
11-13-2012, 09:16 AM
Wait, I'm confused, I thought 2-5-99 was debunked as not a SBD? Jack I actually thought you were a strong believer that it was not? I could be wrong, just my recollection.

Was 2-6 the rumored SBD that was just a really strong tape? My memory is getting quite hazy. I know there are some really strong tapes, 3-13 and 3-14 jump to mind, that were mis-labeled for a long time.

Jack
11-13-2012, 10:40 AM
2-5 oakdale = sbd
2-6 uconn = single point stack tape that has been labeled as a sbd. 3-13, 3-14, 2-6, 2-17 and one or two other Of Tavitz's mid feb tapes have been mislabeled sbds at one point or another.

2-5 is a sbd. No question about it and I've definitely never questioned it. A pure version was released here by the taper last year as well.

Funny I almost said the same thing about the mic in disputing it. Guess I'm wrong - could have sworn this was just talked about but maybe I'm thinking of 2003 which definitely doesn't have any SBDs.

That 2/5 source isn't on the server I use so can't verify....

There's no doubt it's accurate. It was taped by a member of this forum. Unfortunately that had a pretty boring set compared to the next two nights.

Just listening to this captain got me excited. The subtle laying Tim does is really nice in 96 and 97. I don't mind the effects in 99, but you hear this and wonder if they are even necessary.

Still would love to hear the BTCS-era captain that never made it out of the studio.

Thank you very much!

'99 is one tour I don't think will ever be fully covered by any future releases... there are just so many performances I'd want a soundboard of.. particularly the early shows (most of which have shitty tapes).

Those early Rapunzel's were fantastic... just as good as the Ultrasound video hinted a D&T version could be. I really liked the first performance of Stay much more than the 6/8 versions they started playing after that. Spoon on the 12-string, Last Stop, Wynona, The Temple, Wild Horses, and more I'd really want a SBD of. Point is, there really isn't one show from '99 that could cover everything. Oh well, luckily the tapes are great for most of the tour.

It's great having 2-5 as a SBD but it really was lacking most of the truly standout songs from the tour IMO. Love that DDTW, BOWA, and Say Goodbye though.

I've always hoped that 3-13 would get a release, even though the tape is so stellar. Your point is a good one though, if I remember right those early shows had some real gems and were not great tapes. The West Point show always looked like it could make a good release as well given the tape was a stealth (if memory serves me).

Speaking of the early 99 D&T shows I always liked those few #40s they threw in. I think the rumor was that the lyrics reflected a possible BTCS outtake-b-side that never made it out.

Yeah tape quality aside, 3-13 is one of the best shows of the tour. I'd take 3-6 in a heartbeat as well (http://dmbalmanac.com/TourShowSet.aspx?id=453054605&tid=16&where=1999)

Didn't know that about #40 that's pretty damn cool. I think I probably enjoy individual shows from the '96 tour the most, but in looking at an entire tour as a whole, '99 was probably the peak of D&T, if that makes any sense :lol The song spread was just incredible, and every single damn BTCS song sounded great. I made a D&T version of BTCS once, and used that Farm Aid Dave solo Pig... sounded really really great.

Back to the #40 lyrics, that was always the rumor, not sure if anyone more plugged in than me could confirm. I believe the story went that someone heard the BTCS demo tapes and the version of #40 on there matched the lyrics sang during the 99 D&T tour.

I hate compilations, but it's discussions like this that really make me want one for the '99 tour (of course making the BIG assumption management wouldn't fuck it up). Like you said, that LIOG is unreal but 1-29 would be a bit of disappointment if it was the '99 show chosen. Off the top of my head I'd want:

Seek Up
Rapunzel
Spoon
Wild Horses
Stay (first version not in 6.8)
If I Had a Boat
Last Stop
The Temple --> Wynona (this tape seriously sucks ass, it's ashame cause this segue was amazing)
Two Step (Tim was unreal in those intros)
Halloween
Captain
Pay For
DDTW (Tim again was unreal on those breakdowns before "this land is...)

I'm sure I'm missing alot, but I'd kill for SBD's of those. But good luck finding a show with all those.

I'm calling total bullshit on the BTCS #40 lyrics. There wasn't even a whisper about #40 from '95 until the signs came out in Fall. I have never heard anyone having anything to say about hearing anything from BTCS sessions, let alone #40 and remembering lyrics that matched a version so thrown together that there are no choruses over a year later. Sounds like a Scambro to me...

I'm not saying it is accurate or even anything more than a foggy memory, but that is what I recall from back in the day. I'm not even sure what board it would have been back then. Probably before the ML, maybe nancies or grey st.

To Jack's point I recall people then taking this person seriously, I was relatively new and much like today, primarily a lurker - so I can't say.

Interestingly though, I find the lyrics for those several versions to be much closer to the 95 versions than the more recent 'tables turned again.' Hopefully we'll find out some day.

The 99 tour, for the most part had a bit of a meat head audience; in my mind significantly worse than the 97 crowd. I remember a bit of noise at the 97 NY (Syracuse/Utica) shows but nothing like the 99 Buffalo show, where he actually stops playing wild horses because people were yelling.

That crowd (Buffalo) was a big disappointment for me. Its a shame too, I liked that show, but I can't even go back and listen to the tape because of the crowd.

I think the problem is some of the people that go are expecting to be at a normal loud "Dave" show

Having acoustic shows at colleges on weekends lends to asshat audiences. And, as raven said, I think people were pregaming for a dmb show and were just to riled up to give a shit about the music.

99 was the perfect storm as far as mainstream success, age of fanbase, & people still being unaware that dave matthews & tim reynolds was not dmb with some guy named tim opening.

I was expecting a horror scene at URI in '03, and the crowd couldn't shut the fuck up early in the set, but at least it wasn't the total douchefactory that was crowds yelling "where's Dave?!??!?!" during Tim solos like '99.

Wow flyers? That is some initiative. But to be fair, Dave's comment and the recording seem to suggest that it worked.

In 99 the guy sitting next to me would let out a gutteral scream at the opening of every song; kinda of like he was hearing harvester of sorrow after chasing it for ten years.

When Tim's first solo came up, he screamed on cue and then realized it was just tim and turned to the person with him and said "this sucks, I paid for dave, I'm going to take a dump." The ridiculousness of the statement has been whats kept that memory squarely in my head for 13 years.

Yeah that is really good. Even though we have 4 SBD recordings from that tour, I enjoy some of the recordings more like 2/17 or 1/25.

I just love the lyrics in 2/21's version:

Dreamed I killed God, and woke up
Dreamed I killed all, and woke up
He said it's already morning, so what
Then I dreamed I killed God, and woke up woke up

He was lying in the form of a man
Bleeding and pleading pleading to me
He said please don't, please stop
Wait, what are you doing?

I say I say man I'm gonna leave you to hell lying
My best of love
It's no love
A ring in my head
And I ain't over this so...

I dreamed I killed God, and I woke up
I blamed him for all this
For all, everything that's wrong here
Then I dreamed I killed God and woke up.

BOWA

3/6 in tempe is kind of a darkhorse with a similar set to 3/7. A lot of the performances are really fucking good.

I do find it weird dave stuck to the style of writing lyrics that ballard (I assume) pushed on him. Even after all of the backlash and after they dumped most of that material. He never reverted. Not even talking quality, just style (though his opened ended lyrics allowed people to find greatness in lyrics that may, or may not have been there). Sure, there are examples, but for the most part he stayed pretty straight forward lyrically.

Didn't his Grandfather die around that time? From what I've heard, they were especially close. Also, the drinking probably didn't help. And all the weight he gained round that time, does anyone think it may have been due to anti-depressants?

Regardless, yeah, he hasn't exactly written in that same style of music since then - or in the same thematic universe. He appears to gloss over things instead of hitting them straight on. A few songs, like Shotgun, approach that emotional honesty which tells me he hasn't completely lost his nerve. Happier place and all, I suppose. Yet I think it's easier to be grateful when everything's going well, but that doesn't always translate into transparency.

Honestly, lyrically [minus Angel and I Did It], Everyday was pretty good. I honestly love most of the songs due to their lyrics. I also think that they are still pretty dark (at least a few of them), just not in the same space of darkness that some songs from the LWS were in.

Have been on a D&T kick and have been wearing these two shows out.

But my God, these crowds.

What's wrong with the crowds?

I haven't noticed anything that I can remember.

It's not like the tapes that slaughter your ears after a song ends when the crowd screams/claps.

2003 was horrible....people thought they were going to a full band show, and acted like they were during the shows, at least the ones I was at

Some ramblings about D&T-

-I got to see Tim solo up in New Hope, PA the other day which is always an amazing experience. Seeing Tim perform in front of about 75 people is almost indescribable. He performed a bunch of songs he's played at D&T shows as well so my friends who weren't at all familiar with Tim's solo stuff were able to recognize those. FUNNY guy.

-Since I have to study almost 12 hours a day recently I've been listening to this entire tour. The tape quality for '97 is just miles ahead of most of '96 and most of them aren't annoying to listen to.

-02-18-97 (http://dmbalmanac.com/TourShowSet.aspx?id=453054951&tid=24&where=1997) is extremely underrated. Like 02-21, this was the second night of a 2-show stop.. and the setlist benefits greatly with BOWA, Cryptorchid, Rhyme & Reason, Help Myself, Don't Burn The Pig, all mixed with the standard highlights of '97. Tape is great too. I still think 02-21 is better, but I would be just as happy if this got released one day.

I'm grateful for ANY soundboards, but goddamn... if only the 2-17 and 2-20 SBD's were of the second nights of those stops :lol we would have easily the best two shows of the tour on SBD!

Grabbed this one. '97 was my favorite D&T year, and while this isn't my favorite show from that tour, man is it good to hear another great D&T show. I'm certainly not going to complain about a '97 Captain, that Minarets>DIKG>Typical or a killer '97 Warehouse. I wish that DIKG was a stronger performance (that one was such a powerhouse by the end of the tour), but until they finally wise up and put out either one of the Denver or San Fran shows, this is quite alright with me.

Was stuck studying last night so threw this one on again. I think a testament to how good this tour was is that this is such an incredible release, despite it not even being in the top 10 shows I'd have chosen from the tour. My only gripe is that Dave's vocals are a little rough for the tour, but other than that it really is fantastic. This is one of only a few tours that I've heard every show from, and there's not a single show I wouldn't love to have

I just pray we get 2-18 or 2-21 someday. Normally I'd want shows with crappier tapes than those two have (or the show we dont have a tape from), but they both were just so friggin good that they need to get a release someday

I agree 100% with all of that. The only things I wish this one had that it doesn't is a fully-formed DIKG, a better Passion intro and a LMP. But even short those, it's just damn good. I'm actually listening to it again as I'm writing this. That tour was just perfect.

Yeah I was really disappointed about DIKG too man... thank god we have those other SBD's atleast

2-21-97 is just insane. Just fucking insane-

It has to be the best setlist DM ever pulled out of his ass. On top of that, it's one of those rare shows that actually includes nearly every single highlight of the tour in a single set. Cryptochid is literally the only thing missing from it just about

I haven't seen it mentioned much, but Rhyme & Reason from both 2-18 and 2-21 is one of the highlights of the tour for me

And come on, Blue Water --> DIKG --> Typical? Goddamn.

I always wondered if the SBDs might be out there. I've never heard a rumor, just always wondered since 2-17 and 2-20 circulate. Regardless, I think that 2-21 is well known enough in the community though that we'll probably see it released someday.

IMO this is one of the worst shows of the tour.... yet I still listen to this release constantly and love it to death :lol just such a good friggin tour.

I won't say it's my favorite D&T tour, simply because the three big tours were so different from eachother... but it wouldn't surprise me if it was my most listened to tour of the three

I love almost everything about '96, '97 and '99, but for me '97 is easily my favorite. '96 is more playful, '99 has broader setlists, but '97 has this power and urgency that puts it over for me. Also, those '97 Warehouses are untouchable. Also, DIKG.

I tried to write which one I think is my favorite, but I changed my answer three times in the process :lol so I give up

I'm proud to say over the years I've come close to listening to almost every show from the three tours. While I can't rank them, FWIW I definitely go back and listen to '97 the most. That might be because of the average tape quality of '96 though :dunno:

Spending some time with this one in light of the Live Trax voting thread in DMBc, and it really is incredible how good this show is when you consider that it's one of the worst choices they could have made from the '97 tour. That was just such a good year. I'd really like to see another LT from '97 sometime very soon.

Yeah, there's no question that 23 is the better show, but I really enjoy this show a lot. I just wish it had a better Warehouse. Those '97 Warehouses were killer, and this one just isn't great.

Two Step is amazing on this. It's definitely one of my favorite from the tour. It's funny, this is one of the "worst" shows from the tour and it still has so many amazing highlights

I think my all time favorite released one would be 2.13.96 from one of the Crash singles
