I guess I see that trackslist and Riff > Y&M, Snow Outside I can do without + what's an '07 Dreaming Tree do for us?

I just don't freaking understand why they don't put the extra effort into this and release something like Typical from 9/3/95 with Dionne Farris which is a show that's never going to see a release anyway. Just too many gems to be throwing on You and Me's that no one needs

Tomacco
02-28-2013, 06:09 PM
I dig that listing, and like how they bumped it to 10 tracks. Billies is the only one I feel I have no use for at all. Love that they put a new Sugar Will on here, as well as the debut of KTK and a live Snow Outside. And yeah I remember that Recently being awesome.

JustinC
02-28-2013, 06:09 PM
also cool that they bumped it up to 7 & 10 tracks

Those Typicals are so unique and it's not exactly a song we have no releases of. A 2007 release was required.

I'm good with about 4 of these tracks at best. I'd like to see a range of years covering their whole career up to now, but oh well. I expected some 2012 stuff of course and I am good with The Riff...You and Me is shit though.

Don't hate the song, I just have a different approach when it comes to these Warehouse discs. They're an opportunity to pull shit out that's never going to see the light of day otherwise. Consistently feels like a missed opportunity to me when you figure the oldest song is from '06

celluloid hero
02-28-2013, 06:14 PM

i hear ya, but it's not like they've ever stated that was what THEY want to do with these discs and they've never approached them that way.

so i just think it's silly to get disappointed and complain about them not living up to a standard that really only you've built up in your mind.

Nice way of saying the same thing, no? I was mostly fucking around anyway.

For the most part I like the tracklist, but the 2006-present only is a little disappointing...particularly on the 10. Just saying I'd like to see the 10 have a few deeper tracks on the list. Its not like this isn't for presumably the more hardcore fanbase. I'm not all upset or anything, just expressing some thoughts.

agreed. Is that the one with KKJ on it or was that 2 years ago?

FiddySpence
02-28-2013, 06:23 PM
i'm fine with it being all newer stuff. most of the releases lately are 90's shows and i feel like they've really scaled back present day shows after doing like 4 '08 releases in that one year, so i'm itching for this stuff.

Mersh
02-28-2013, 06:25 PM
Like I said, I just think it would be nice if the extra 3 tracks for the 10 dug deeper. It isn't the end of my world and they never made any promises or anything, just something I'd like. It's just more recent stuff I probably won't listen to very much/at all.

That Recently is a fucking treat. Hope they keep the little Davespeak afterward about how cool it was for them to have D'Earth playing on it that night and it being one of the first songs they recorded as a band with him.

That Sugar Will is also great stuff. If they ever release a "finished" version of that song, I hope it has the vocal melody from this one. If I remember right, the lyrics on this one are pretty stellar as well.

Nice to see a Typical as unique as that one, and The Dreaming Tree was so dominant from 07 onward that I'm down with any release of one.

The Riff and Snow Outside are always welcome, IMO, and I've always enjoyed #27 for what it is.

You and Me aside, good stuff this year.

I think the WH has been doing a much better job these last two years pulling out things for the hardcores. Think about it:

Gas Into Fire
ODH > WIA
Gravedigger Intro > Rapunzel
A Dream So Real
#40 (SPAC)
#34 (2005 debut)
Kill the King (debut)
Sugar Will (from 2010 and basically the only thing we'd really itch for from that Europe run)
Typical Jam (not my cup of tea but a nice rarity)
Recently from 4/18 (probably the most in-demand song from that two-nighter)

The new tracks will get old fast as the novelty will wear of quick. I'd rather they use these discs to get excellent versions of songs out, not just songs out (unless they are one offs or stdh). In a year we'll have better versions of these aftw songs, no doubt. But, I'm happy with this.

The up to 10 tracks is nice, but I feel Frank and Mersh's pain. Not a lot of really inspiring choices here. Just one really classic track would up the quality of this thing so much. And the repeat of Billies is just ridiculous.

Is this Dreaming Tree any different than the Piedmont Park version? Does this #27 offer us anything we didn't get on the LT13 version of the song?

The last two discs were really good though so I wasn't expecting three in a row.

On the plus side I think there are some decent picks here. Recently and KtK are great performances, and Sugar Will and Typical are unique compared to other releases of those songs.

I think 8.2.07 is a clear stand out, though the first week of the tour it was all kinds of awesome. But that's it for me, it's pretty consistently solid across the board. Little things like mixing up the "feels like dying" & "has me dying" makes a difference to me. This particular version has a consistent change up of those lyrics, and a swagger that matches the '70s nightclub feel of the song. His delivery matches the lyrics as well. When he should sound sad, he does, when he's sick of everything, he sounds sick of it. Really good stuff. But it's not like it's anything that absurdly stands out that they *should* have picked.

God why does Jeff not solo on like half of the things he should solo on? He's my favorite soloist in the band right now by a pretty large margin (as kickass as Tim definitely is, I just prefer Jeff and sax in general) and he keeps giving away all his showstoppers. 41, Warehouse, Sugar Will, Crush... come on dude.

The up to 10 tracks is nice, but I feel Frank and Mersh's pain. Not a lot of really inspiring choices here. Just one really classic track would up the quality of this thing so much. And the repeat of Billies is just ridiculous.

Yeah, I just wish that whoever was in charge of releases had a well thought out, cohesive "big picture" view of things. Don't release songs that have already been released (seems so simple, yet...), don't release a track that's going to be released almost simultaneously on the next LT (again, duh, but last year's SDL). And these WH discs should be for unique and/or fantastic performances that would not otherwise see a release in the foreseeable future. I think the Typical, Recently, KTK, and Sugar Will more or less meet those criteria (unless of course any of those full shows get released soon), so I guess it's a decent release, but of course could be so much better with some thought put in to it.

It seems so simple, yet they have released a shit ton of tracks everywhere in every form over the years and like 2 have found their way on to multiple discs. There's no reason for it, but it's hardly criminal. Plus Scranton was a band pick. That wasn't picked the same way as most live shows. Figure Warehouse disc gets announced two months in advance. It comes out right around show announcement time. Show announcement time doesn't come too long after show selection time. If they ask the band what show from the last tour really stood out to them while the Warehouse disc is already in production, they aren't going to not pick the show, and it's too late to change songs on the disc. With as much as they release, the fact it was a Live Trax and a Warehouse disc, both which require a lot of prep time, they just synced in an unfortunate way. The fact that the So Damn Lucky was picked on a disc where they did go out of their way to get some unique stuff (I get not unique enough to some), and then a separate group that actually played the show picked the finale of the same show actually means everyone was on the same page.

I'm not saying there's nothing to gripe about, and the Billies is a bit more egregious because there are websites that track live releases. But it's understandable on rare occasion. I just hope it doesn't become a habit.

I think 8.2.07 is a clear stand out, though the first week of the tour it was all kinds of awesome.

Agreed, those earliest versions were some of the best (if not the best, period). 8/2/07 was a great one.

And these WH discs should be for unique and/or fantastic performances that would not otherwise see a release in the foreseeable future.

Agreed. If we can bang out some ideas off the top of our head easily they shouldn't have such a hard time either.

If they ask the band what show from the last tour really stood out to them while the Warehouse disc is already in production, they aren't going to not pick the show, and it's too late to change songs on the disc.

This makes sense. Poor timing rather than poor planning, not a big deal. And the other repeats i.e. 12/8/98 #41 are forgivable because you got a full show release years after the track release. This Billies thing is just kinda dumb though.

I remember during the Gorge webcast a couple years back, on #41, the band was in a groove and seemed to be waiting on Jeff to come in for his solo. He never did, and Tim picked it up.

Disregard. Wrong performance. Maybe i'm thinking of Crush? Either way, Jeff needs to solo more.

I guess it's a decent release, but of course could be so much better with some thought put in to it.

The thing is, thought gets put into them. I think like around the first couple Warehouse 8s, those were just random grabs of songs that hadn't been on those releases. But there's definitely thought in this. Recently and Typical are the only repeats, both are very different versions from the previous release. The Sugar Will is different from any release, The Riff and Snow Outside are two of the more popular tracks from the album, both released for the first time. You & Me is not on a Warehouse disc and is a direct segue of their Riff pick, Dreaming Tree was tits in 2007 and the other version from the tour is nice, but has a few issues. Then by far the best version of Kill the King and the first from the original tour.

It's not the thought you would have put into it, and really only the Recently might land in a top 50 performances of the past 5 years, but there's thought into the picks. Even the Billies is the first time it's been on a Warehouse disc, right? Just a bad date.

I'm not an apologist, I just think comments like "no thought" are off the mark.

Sugar Will 03.06.10 O2 Arena, London, England
Tripping Billies 08.22.07 Riverbend Music Center, Cincinnati, OH
Recently 04.18.09 John Paul Jones Arena, Charlottesville, VA
The Riff 09.07.12 Cricket Wireless Amphitheatre, Chula Vista, CA
Snow Outside 09.09.12 Shoreline Amphitheatre, Mountain View,
Typical Situation 09.19.07 Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre, Charlotte, NC
Kill The King 06.06.06 DTE Energy Music Theatre, Clarkston, MI

Happy to get this Sugar Will and Riff. Snow Outside too. Debut KTK is pretty fuckin hot.

Including this Billies is odd as we have it.

Best one ever.

Sugar Will & Recently are.

I remember #27 from Randall's being pretty good, but I don't think any version truly stands out. I'm psyched about Kill the King and Sugar Will though. And that '07 Typical when they were messing around and playing the jam. That's pretty cool. The rest is just money.

It's decent. Dave's voice is kinda hoarse, but he sings it kinda differently. I remember a flub towards the end.

It would be nice to have a Tim version released and we no doubt will, but there 18 versions released for the '90s that cover Dave solo, Dave & Tim and full band plus multitudes of soundboards. I'll take this one over every single one of those except the Dionne Farris and the Raven version. Especially because I have little to zero desire for any 2007 show to be released. This is the perfect avenue for this version to be released. Give me Alpine 2012 full show for my Tim Typical release.

I wonder what rights issues they would run into with both. I Will Not Apologize is actually one of their tunes isn't it? Didn't he just rap their song over Eh Hee? and fuck Dave for missing that verse and making that come slightly short of an all-time required track. The Jackpot could be a problem because it's another person's track. I wouldn't think they would be problems because they're all buddies, but we don't have a live Love of My Life. Who knows.

Are you counting this one with the "last two?" Because the 2010 disc was a winner for me: only 2007 You Never Know, only released full band #40 and a great concert moment, only released Dream So Real, first released Write a Song, best (IMO) Kit Kat Jam, and #34 liberation. 6 of 8 is a winner every time.

2009 was a dud for me, but you know I love Say Goodbye and getting 1997 version made me happy. Eh Hee with Danny Barnes was cool. 2 of 8 is not a winner, but I still play the Say Goodbye a decent bit.

We have so much released stuff, that I really like when different eras of songs get released. We had the conversation a bit earlier about Typical, though it's not the best example because of how unique the 2007 versions are. It's a song I like a lot, I'd like a released version from each period. 2002, 2005, 2007, 2009, 2012. There always has to be a last place and if it's the 5th best out of 5, as it's a favorite of mine, it's still good. There are songs where I'm still looking for multiples from the same era, YNK isn't one of them for me.

First person I've heard about getting a 10. Hopefully more start popping up now.

This Riff is crunchy.

It's been said before, but Sugar Will needs a studio release.

Hadn't heard that Tripping Billies before. Great to hear Roi.

Don't care for Tim's additions on Recently. Takes away the breezy feel the song should have.

Also, love Tim's effects on Recently. Would love more jammed out songs to hear some of that stuff.

Not a big fan of this Sugar Will. '04 versions def. top it. #27 was pretty well played but otherwise standard. Good choices for the WH this time around, but so far im not too impressed with the disc. The mix is kinda shitty. Dave's guitar is much too low, Tim too loud..too much reverb on the drums. Over-compressed.

This Billies' is pretty good, not sure how it's much different from most versions we already have though.

The song itself sounds a bit rough to me, but I'm sure it will get better the more they play it. It will probably be night and day when they release a more matured version in the future. The jam sounds great.

Terrible. It's almost worse that Boyd is so great and so much more prevalent on this album compared to the past few, as he plays virtually none of his AFTW parts live.

Thoughts:

#27 is #27. I like the song, but nothing noteworthy about this one.

Sugar Will is awesome. Rashawn starts his solo off wonderfully before getting too screechy for a bit there. I kind of wish he kept it going as it was in the beginning, but otherwise, I'm glad an "updated" Sugar Will is out there.

Tripping Billies is Tripping Billies.

Recently is legit as hell. This is one of my favorite versions of the tune and I'm glad they kept the Davespeak in at the end.

The Riff is really tight except for a slight botch by Tim at the beginning of his solo. I'm glad that Jeff's flute is turned up pretty high in the mix for this.

Y&M is Y&M.

Snow Outside is great for an early version. I look forward to seeing a version released a couple of years down the road once they really develop it live some.

No, he's able to play it. Listen again. In the jam, when everyone else is going apeshit, if you listen you can hear him playing that exact part in the background. He just needs to do it more prominently...or be turned up in the mix a bit (which seems like a pipedream these days)

The last couple of years, he's actually been holding his own (possibly due to a switch of violins). I miss the violin in the mix. Even with a skree here and there. When Boyd's on, he's REALLY on.

Unfortunately, when he's off, dogs' ears explode.
