Highlights of this show include the first public #41 preceded by #40 and a substantial mini set of Recently>Water into Wine>Lie In Our Graves. This show marks the band's first return to the Southeast after a lengthy time away, touring in Europe and elsewhere around the US. The show is comprised of solid performances from each band member in front of a lively audience. This particular release is a restoration of sorts, being a mix of the soundboard and an incomplete multi-track recording. 4.7.95 Cameron Indoor Stadium, Durham, NC has been digitally mastered and is available in its entirety.

I mean, if they were ever going to 'flood us' with some era, as far as desireability goes, winter, spring & summer 95 take a back seat to no other. And really, there are so many other shows I want to go along with these.

It's great that they hit a "top 5" show. Not sure how many years have a top 5 release out. This is the second for '95. I'd even give you three with 2.25.95.

I'm not sure I agree about 2/25 even though it's still a really good show. For me, it was just getting that Blue Water released which I always loved and the little story behind why it was played. I mean, yeah the segues are awesome and the show is '95 so it's a really good performance but I don't know if I'd say it's top 3.

Wait, what's the story behind the BW getting played at easton again?

The band did an online chat with their fans hosted by AOL a few days earlier on 2/22/95, and someone asked why they don't play certain songs anymore like Blue Water and Dave said something along the lines of they either get bored of them or they just forget them but they would try and bring them back, and of course 3 days later Blue Water was played.

That's the highlight. I love the turn from the happy Water Wine (which he throws in the blue water) to the dark Blue Water. That's really a great moment from old school DMB, but it's about way more than that for me. I love this show. I love a Nancies opener, especially the '95s. I love the sound of Stefan's bass in the mix. One of my favorites. I didn't say top 3, I said 3 of the top 5.

Oh I gotcha. My bad. Hmm...I still don't know...5/5/95, RR, and 8/23 are still top 3 for me but this will probably bump out 8/23. I do agree about Stefan in the mix though, which reminds me he was also mixed in really well for the 7/20/95 release, especially on OSW.

Score another one for fully dynamic music with this one, so great to see DMB moving away from the huge amounts of dynamic range compression that were seen on some of the previous DMBLive and Live Trax releases of older shows. If you loved the dynamics of the Tampa '94 release then this will give you more of the same.

Here's a look at the waveform for Dancing Nancies, vol 8 (too loud, loss of dynamics) on top with vol 19 (still nice and loud but dynamics remain intact) on the bottom.

I've had this show on all day on repeat in the background, but haven't had (and will not have anytime soon) time for a dedicated listen. But, just from what I hear, it seems as though the show gets better as it goes on. If I had yo guess the first few songs may not be multitrack? Sounds like we'll get some info from the almanac.

I remember the sbd for this was inc? What was missing there?

Terry, I had the same problem on Safari on Mac. Make sure you have the latest updates, and then under "preferences" in safari, under the "security" tab, you are able to allow java to run on a per-site basis, click that and "allow always" for the warehouse/musictoday address it shows. It will be fine then.

I remember putting that up on dreaming tree a long time ago and was contacted by Kelly Darnell, who was a taper that offered me a DAT of a soundboard. I'm curious how that compares to the recording they released. The quick sample I heard made me think that it sounded pretty close to the source I have below. Bonus too he was able to provide some shows that weren't in big circulation as well. Huge thanks to Sarah Baucco for converting all of those and to Kelly for sharing!

11-5-93, 4-8-94, 5-22-93, 1-29-93 (maybe 1-27-93 - have to check it), 2-16-94, 7-23-94, 1-3-94, 12-28-94, 7-20-94, 3-31-93, 2-10-93, 7-19-94, 6-17-93, 9-29-94, 10-7-93, 11-11-94, 2-10-94, 11-19-93,4-7-95 (with the first 4 songs everyone is missing), 4-10-95, 2-9-94

From my email exchange:

"Hey man,
I just read your post about the 4/7/95 show at Duke. I'm pretty sure you can get better quality!
First off, that's not a board tape. The band had recently returned from Europe and Bagby was told not to give a line out to anyone. During this period Bagby and I were pretty tight and I watched all shows from behind the board with Jeff and Fenton. I actually got to mix a couple of times (like 30 sec. while Jeff ran to the back of the board) and ran the lights once at Ziggy's when Fenton disappeared. I don't mean to sound like I'm bragging, I'm just trying to prove my authenticity.
Back to that night. My DAT was broken so Bagby let me use his portable DAT (JVC I think). The DAT sat on top of Jeff's rack. You're right, the acoustics were shit. Bagby seemed overmatched.
I've only listened to it two or three times (never got my DAT fixed) and it was bad. It's yours if you want it...maybe you can make something of it.

I seriously think this is my new favorite Dmblive. And that is saying aaaaaa lot. That opening run and the liog lyrics in the water into wine jam is just absolute perfection. Plus the encore seals the deal. Full band 40 followed by 41 police and that's got to be a favorite watchtower as well. The sound quality is pretty much perfection as well. I know everyone ranted and raved about the sound of the the masquerade release and I agree it was good, but I think this sounds way better. I really hope we keep getting quality of release through Dmblive. We had to wait almost a year in between Dmblive releases but if they continue to be this quality I won't mind them released at a slower pace.

Really nice show from top to bottom.

I liked the effort that went into it. Many times it seems like they go through the archive and listen to shows doing their archive thing, find something that sounds good and complete, is a bit interesting. Then see what's available publically about the show (obviously this didn't start right away, but it's obvious it matters now), and just let her rip.

This one had a lot of work done. The multi-track set up was brand new and had a flaw, the back-up two track had a flaw, but they really wanted this show out, so they were able to merge sources and get a pretty famous, memorable show without a great source out there. For that alone it's near the top of my favorite dmblive releases despite the fact it was their 75th 1995 show.

Listened to this one all the way through last night, and damned if it isn't another killer show. Really loved the Recently>WTW>LIOG and Jimi, and the encore is perfect.

Man oh man, what a show. I listened to the show twice yesterday. It is simply incredible, from top to bottom. As everyone else already mentioned, the opening run was awesome, with the "LIOG" interpolation added into "Water Into Wine". There were some slight skrees in "Dancing Nancies", but overall it was a killer version. "Jimi Thing" simply blew me away. Wow, Roi absolutely killed it and I really miss this era for the song. Moving along to the encore, "#40" was awesome full band. The lyrics may not be as strong as Yoshi's, but I love the music in this version. It was awesome to hear the debut of "41 Police". It was also very interesting to hear that the music for "#41" was already there, from the very beginning. It really reminded me of the "Funk in 5" jam from the prior year. Finally, this was a very unique and great version of "Watchtower". I like how the band tried out a new jam for this version.

Overall, I am very happy with this purchase. I love the band's energy on this night and the risks that they took. This show will definitely get a lot of play and is already close to the top of my list.

Let's hope that we can get the prior show eventually too :upyours

4/11/95 would make a nice quickie DMBlive if anyone with influence is reading :)

I just can't get enough of Spring '95. I actually really enjoy how short some of them are like 4/11 and 5/5. Just great shows to throw on, and don't have a single dull moment

Best year for the band, period. It's the only year I've enjoyed literally every single second that has been released

Doesn't look much different than any other 95 to me. If anyone were to use any influence they had, and you were picking a year that already had 11 releases, I'd try to branch out quite a bit more than this show.

I agree. It's great to be able to put on a really good full show even when you don't have two and a half hours to invest.

Of course, I know that. Like I said, it was my first show, obviously that's why I'd want it released.

And it's also typically great '95.

Yea, 1995 is flawless. 1996-1998 are almost there though, but slightly lower.

Yeah, I was just going to ask what stands out on this show. I am sure it is tight, but...

Guys, I said it simply b/c it was my first show. I thought that was pretty obvious. Who wouldn't want their first show released? Especially when it's right in the wheelhouse of the era the DMBlive series covers.

Not really a bad show in that whole run from 12.27 on. Great sets and great performances. If one were to be released, I'd probably just want one of the shows we don't have a SBD of (12.29 fits the bill). Either 12.30 or 12.31 would be fantastic too though.

I haven't ever listened to the whole run from 12/27 on, thanks for the reply man I'm gonna get on that

It has been too long since I listened to 12/31. Really was a solid end to their best year IMO

Yeah, I absolutely love that Little Thing from it as well. It kinda has "Deed is Done" lyrics-

Oh, so cold the way
I've been begging and praying
I bowed before God and His angels
And he said nothing at all to me
I, I pray for this girl to live
I pray for her pain to end,
But a God has deaf ears and hears
Nothing that I hoped he would
Make it all went away
If I could not trust
Take my hope away
if I cannot dream
Take the life
And I'll stay here
and play with myself again

I've always wondered if someone Dave knew in late '95 had cancer or something (forgive me if the inspiration for Deed is Done is well known)

They definitely have a Dreaming Tree chorus type vibe as well in parts

I believe Dave said he wrote Captain about a friend who had cancer. I could be wrong.

12/29 has a vid. Some cool early versions including the 1st #41 w/ the final music (not "41 police"), DIDO working lyrics, early Too Much, full band Little Thing (aka Transition Breakdown on some tapes), and an Energizer Bunny reference.

Crash then #41

Stefan plays a lot of this show sitting in a folding chair. (Sick?)

I have no idea why but I never really enjoyed the tapes of the '95 NYE run. Maybe because the NYE '96 run was brilliance and overshadowed it ......I dunno....has to have been 10+ years since I've listened to any of them aside from 12/29 in full though...
