LIVE TRAX 26: 7.30.03

7.30.2003 Sleep Train Amphitheatre in Marysville, CA is our next carefully selected volume in the Live Trax series. The show has a spacious but powerful quality to it, with the band members really living in the songs and enjoying the interplay between each other. Highlights of the show include the dramatic peaks of Spoon which had not been played since 99; the intense Dreaming Tree jam; and the mini set of So Much To Say>Anyone Seen the Bridge>Pantala Naga Pampa>Rapunzel towards the end of the show. The version of Sleep to Dream Her might just be the best one we’ve heard and is a perfect example of the quiet cool of LeRoi Moore. Minarets is another powerful tune with a haunting sound thanks to Dave’s vocal delivery and the wingmen, Boyd and LeRoi, delivering another classic melody line.

Please note - this item is available for pre-order. Orders will ship on or around August 2, 2013.

Boo-urns. There's already a SBD of that show. :(

Unfortunate that there's already a sbd, but this show is really great.

And plenty of completists will be happy to have this STDH.

The SBD of this show is lifeless. If this has a good mix then I don't have a problem with it. An '03 KKJ and Minarets is something to look forward to.

Wasn't this one of the on house video feed boards? Either way, awesome setlist & the sbd blows. Not a bad pick by any stretch, but not great. Still a great recovery from that last shitfest.

Awesome, a show I was at getting a release. From what I remember it was a good show, but the crowd didn't seem to be in it. I just hope to god they edited out the guy who kept yelling for Grace Is Gone (if he was picked up on the recording). After the second time it got annoying.

I took it as a jab at the selection because it was obviously going to be released someday seeing as there have been a few single song performances already released, which means it was just an easy and on-the-shelf pick for them to make.

Look at 09 and 10. For a cover song it shouldn't be that many times.

I did (that's why I posted the link). 2009 isn't too bad. 2010 may be on the verge over over-played, but overall between the period Jack mentioned, it has been played, but not "over-played" (see 1993-1996).

Whether or not it's played too many times for a cover song is pretty subjective and an entirely different argument IMHO.

My enthusiasm for this release is diminishing somewhat now that I'm listening to the show. Through to WWYS now. Boyd is mostly fine with some skrees. Dave seems a bit off. His voice isn't in tip top shape here. A few songs seems bit sloppy. There's definitely some ups and downs to this one.

Yeah I just finished listening to the whole show. Dave's voice is not at it's best and he flubs a bunch of songs. Boyd skrees up a number of songs too, including this Minarets.

I really do think they should have gone with a different '03 show. 8/7 would've been a great pick. Feel like they just had this one on the back burner for a while because a SBD/ALD was out and they pulled it out to fill a spot.

I agree with this, especially with the three tracks that have been chosen for release. At least there wasn't some long break in between Live Trax 25 and 26. And you have to expect that 27 will be out December 10th or 17th.

So the sound quality is good?

I enjoy the quality of it. Someone here or over on Ants mentioned it sounded "boxy" I can tell a little bit about what (s)he was saying. But it's mostly the crowd noise, there isn't too much depth to the crowd. To that I respond with, I don't think the show was sold out. I was able to grab seats a few nights before the show. And seems like I remember the lawn being half empty. So maybe they did the best they could with the crowd.

Yeah, Butch is way up in the mix. :upyours

Sound quality is nowhere near as sluggish as GGP. I like how the crowd sounds slightly distant. Not overpowering.

Roi is clear as a bell as well.

It's bullshit they cut that improv. Here it is (http://www.sendspace.com/file/112mif) for anyone that's wondering.

Very nice sound to this.. pretty rich with room for all the instruments to sound clear and prevalent. Butch is definitely higher in the mix and they mixed him to the low-end with Carter's bass drum, which is great.

Just getting a chance to listen to Disk 1 with a fat fuckin joint.

Listening to BOWA alone out the gate, after having seen them play this song as recently as June and several times since this... I think everything about current DMB is better, except maybe one surprising thing - the sax. Maybe it's a grass-is-greener thing, but I just feel like Roi owns this song more. He plays during the lyrical parts more freely and feels it out to his liking more. It doesn't feel like he's TRYING in a way, which is less impressive technically but more emotional and more indicative of Roi's input into the band sonically. Something about Roi's playing here feels more right to me than Jeff's, even though Jeff and the band rips it harder than this version for sure. The tempo of this song, and a few others, in this show is certainly slower in this version than ones we've seen the last five years.

Fan#41
08-05-2013, 01:04 AM
Yeah, there are a few tunes where Jeff's approach just feels "forced" in a sense even though that's not what he's trying to to do, rather Roi's approach allowed his solos to have much more freedom. But on songs like say Die Trying or #41 Jeff most certainly fits like a glove.

I don't know what it is but....these last few releases, Crash Into Me has really stood out for me. Butch's backing in particular but just the performances are so fucking good. I know it's a single and been played a million times and doesn't stretch the boundaries of anything with zero solos or arrangement change of any kind, but it's still a gorgeous song and this and the '06 release performances of Crash are fantastic.

Yeah absolutely. If I had to make a general rule, I'd say the newer the song, the better Jeff fits. Some of the older ones Jeff feels weirdly forced on, like OSW, for example.

I don't think it's every performance though, specifically speaking of BOWA. Some performances he just fucking murders it, it's awesome. The lone '08 one from I think 7/4 is one of my favorite versions of the song with Jeff.

I've seen BOWA with Jeff as many times as with Roi, and MSG 2010 is the best of all of them.

On an unrelated note, this LT's version of KKJ is total crap compared to the other two 2002 ones we have released. But 2003 did have its good versions too. 6/20/03 is a fantastic KKJ.

If they were gonna release a show where Dave's voice was a bit on the rougher side, then they should have put out 8/7/03.

bsan83
08-05-2013, 06:30 AM
Oh man, right around 5:30 in Spoon there's this descending line from 'Roi that is just all sorts of awesome.

I'm glad that the '03 release was something from the west coast run, as that was probably the best part of this tour. 8.7 is a better show, but this is probably second, and even though a few tracks have been released, there's still a bunch in this I'm glad they released (Spoon, Minarets, KKJ, BOWA, etc.), and I'm glad that the mix is as Butch heavy as it is. It's too bad that Dave sounds like ass on a good bit of it, but oh well, can't do anything about that.

edit: 'Roi's WWYS solo is all sorts of hot.

I know that some really like Jeff's playing, but I'll always be partial to LeRoi and his playing. I think he sounds outstanding on this release. To me his style of playing fit in so perfectly with this band. That's not saying I don't like Jeff and what he has to bring to this band today, but listening to Roi on songs like Sleep to Dream Her from this release makes me miss his sound and playing so much more.

I'm actually not a fan of the 2003 Spoons. Sound like everyone only vaguely remembers how to play the song, and are worried about messing up the whole time. Dave randomly rearranges and repeats verses, the bridge is missing, and on this release at least either Boyd isn't playing at all until the end or they mute him until then. The Live At... version is a little better, but my favorite is definitely Trax 15. That one at least sounds like they rehearsed it a couple times.

There is no act. I just made a little joke of a comment because it seemed like the Leroi/Jeff stuff was starting to get drudged up in here. I used #34 because there are people who take it seriously that the song should never be played without out Leroi.

Maybe for me it's forgetting that Spence isn't here that I put in the comment about Jeff as a disclaimer. I wasn't trying to get this into a LeRoi/Jeff debate in here, just from the tracks I heard I thought LeRoi sounded great and I missed his sound. Man Butch sounds fucking fantastic on SMTS > Rapunzel. Loudest he's been on a mix of either of those songs, I think. I love it. :rawk

I didnt realize how long its been since I listened to this era, found myself missing Tim's parts a bit in spots. Great release though, love hearing Roi and Butch for a change.

I think the mix is fine. It's not the best mix, but it's fine, IMO. :dunno

It's okay, not as bad as Gorge 02, which got me worried when I saw that, but it's o.k.

I'm still waiting for another '02 release with a great mix to make up for it.

Finally giving this a listen......I forgot how good '03 was on some of these tunes.

Come on, gweeps, that one has no jam

If the Ingrid version had the jam it would have been in the best version ever conversation.

:upyours She's also hotter, IMO.

Yup, love me some Ingrid. :upyours

Amazing how timid this Dreaming Tree compared to the past few years.

After finally getting quality listen under good headphones I think this mix is not as bad as many are making it out to be. It's no LT 3 but then again nothing will ever reach that level I'm convinced. Overall solid release. Really loving this GiG.

They should've just released that whole 3-night stand, flawless mix.

I've sorta rediscovered GIG. I mean I've always enjoyed it and appreciated it as a really solid song but not until recently I've been really into the tune. Going back to some of the first performances, skipping to the '07 Blackwater interpolations, then to the '02 - '04 slide intros by Stefan, the hoedown outros, the Bela guest spot from 9/4/00, all the way back to the LWS cut. I have a new found love for the tune.

The Lillywhite Sessions version will always be my favourite. The unmastered quality adds to the perfect somber tone of the take.

:upyours I didn't really start appreciating it until the '03 D&T tour. Love the hoedown ones.

Just got mine in today along with LT25 and I'm loving this one. Haven't given 25 a go yet, but I'm a HUGE fan of the '02-'04 era and I could see this release becoming one of my favorites.

Really dug Boyd's plucking in Kit Kat Jam too, kind of different but it works. Oh and it's so refreshing to listen to something "new" with 'Roi. I've listened to this show before but not this quality so it feels brand new and it makes me miss him big time. Hard to believe that here in 10 days it'll be the 5 years on the dot.

I still remember, when I first heard grace at Foxboro '00, thinking to myself 'this song is going to be bigger than crash. This album is going to make this band bigger than ever. Fuck.' Oh my how things can fall apart.

I thought the same thing..especially after the Giants shows. My first time hearing Grey Street and Bartender live (along with GiG), I was totally floored and awed by this band. Memories.

Hell, I remember seeing the first two shows of summer 2000 and thinking "After BTCS and the album these new songs will be on, they're gonna be one of the biggest bands in the world, rivaling U2 and Bruce"
