Ah man, this is so great. This show is so awesome yet has such a shitty tape. Always wanted a soundboard of Last Stop and Seek Up with the reprise outro. Fucking website keeps timing out though, I can't wait to snatch this.

Oh well, I'll grab it later. I really hope this one sells well. We still have so much of the '99 tour that deserves a SBD but this is one hell of a good start. Thankfully this wasn't one of the many shows of the tour that have flawless AUDs... the tape really blows on this one.

Having a problem with java on my mac. Who the fuck uses java anymore.

Majew10
01-14-2014, 02:34 PM
is anyone else having issues downloading this using mavericks? I have the updated java and its not working. Tried using Safari and Chrome.

edit: ^should have read above. Ya such bullshit.

Mitch
01-14-2014, 02:39 PM
I had that problem on my mac at home downloading LT28. Here's what you gotta do (I wish I was home on the mac, I'd be able to explain it much better). You gotta go into the "preferences" from the drop down menu on the top left, under "security" tab, I think it says "manage website settings", on the left you'll see java, highlight that, there should be on the right a dmbstore.musictoday or something url to click. You'll get a drop down box and the bottom option says "run in unsafe mode", you have to select that. Make sure you click "Trust" every time along the way, it will work after all this. This is all from my shoddy memory like I said, hope it makes sense.

My usual source of downloading things is down. Bah. Guess I'll wait.

Mitch
01-14-2014, 02:42 PM
I should have just done this initially rather than try to explain. Here's the email I got from them when I complained I couldn't download LT28 on mac. Just follow their instructions.

If you experience problems downloading your purchase, please follow the troubleshooting steps below.
Step 1: Check System & Browser compatibility:
Macintosh users:
**We apologize for the inconvenience but customers running OSX 8.5 & up or Safari 7 will need to complete the steps below to access the download content due to changes with thes updates:
1. After purchasing the download, click on the download link and a window will pop-up
2. This window may contain a message: Missing Plugin, indicating that you do not have Java installed. Mavericks does not come with Java installed. Java is required for our download manager
3. Click on the error message and a dialog box will appear
4. Click More Info to download Java
5. Once the file is downloaded, locate it and double click to install. Follow the installation instructions
6. Refresh the web page
7. Click the download link again
8. You will receive an error message indicating that Java is not enabled
9. Click to enable it, clicking accepting the "Trust Java for this website" dialog
10. If the download fails, you will need to change the Java settings for this website.
11. Go to Safari > Preferences > Security > Manage Website Settings > Java
12. Under Configured Websites, locate the store URL
13. In the drop-down menu next to the URL, select Run in Unsafe Mode
14. You will be prompted to accept this change, click Trust
15. Click Download again
16. You will see a dialog box indicating that there may be a problem with the application, accept it.
17. The download should work.

For anyone else on a Mac, in addition to following those steps I posted this afternoon, also try this: in System Preferences, click the Java icon, when the Java control panel opens, go to Security and roll the lever down to Medium (it's probably set on High). I can't say that's exactly what did it, but that's the only significant change I made b/w it not working the first time and working 5 minutes later, in addition to a bunch of random clicking and re-starting.

Yeah this Seek Up outro is some prime stuff. They were on top of their game this tour and Dave still had that goofy naivety about him back then. I'm pretty sure '99 was the last year he wore the flannel plaid pants (Woodstock).

I can't get enough of this. Such a great tour. I really enjoy the raw SBD feed for D&T as well. I'd probably take a mastered show like Luther over raw if given the option, but raw is a nice change of pace. Makes me feel more like I'm actually at the show.

I just never will understand why some tracks start in such random places on these releases. Really glad I got to hear Dave make weird sounds and some bitch yell Satellite for the first 50 seconds of Wild Horses

To celebrate this, I wanted to upload some of my favorite gems from the '99 tour.

Spoon (2-17) - One of the most underrated tapes on the tour, it sounds fantastic. Played on a 12-string by Dave, just one of those performances where Tim & Dave are spot on together.

Little Thing (1-27) - Only performance that tour. Someone yells out for it, and Dave agrees to sing in but from the perspective of a drunk lonely woman at a bar. One of the most haunting versions and my favorite one ever. Crowd is a little loud, but the clarity of D&T is fantastic, great tape.

The Temple --> Beauty of Wynona (2-23) - The Temple is an incredible cover of a Jesus Christ Superstar tune, only played once. Shitty tape, but really really cool performance.

Rapunzel (1-20) - Hurts to listen to how good this is, really sucks they dropped it so fast. Average quality tape.

Stay (1-26) - This is the debut performance in REGULAR time! If you don't like the 6/8th time then you'll love this. I definitely prefer it. Like Rapunzel, average quality tape that could use an upgrade.

I'm not much for D&T but this release is really a great listen. I enjoy it more than the 2 D&T LT's probably because the show features a lot of BTCS material and it's more or less their first acoustic foray in to these BTCS tunes.

Amen. A lot of that is obviously the mastering, but I was absolutely shocked at how much of the tone came from his Lakewood guitar he used in '96 and '97. I had a chance to record with one, and it was incredible how much it reminded me of Luther. Really clean, bright, unique tone. He had moved on to a Martin HD-28V by the time '99 came around, but I'm 99% sure I can hear that Lakewood on BTCS.

That has a part of it, surely, but with these releases, it's clear they're just using the guitar feed rather than mics. I don't remember if/when they stopped micing his acoustic, but it would make these releases sound a million times better if they could rely on that source.

Agreed. I'm pretty sure they were used in the two LiveTrax recordings though, which I was referring to. I can't remember specific songs to point out an example, but I could hear Dave's palm making that "clicking" sound when they were sweaty and sticking to the bridge pins. I'm far from an expert, but I've never heard that come through the feed alone in my experience.

When I used to record Martin dreadnought using just the feed, they were for the most part extremely bassy... I haven't listened to this release with headphones yet but hopefully it didn't come out they way. The Lakewood M32-12 I got to record with actually sounded surprisingly bright with just the feed, but like you said nothing touches mics. My lazy ass always tries to record with just the feed, but after the first playback I set up the mics :lol

IIRC the pictures I've seen from the '99 tour showed Dave's guitar still had a mic. I think that stopped by '03, but Tim continued to have one. Not sure for recent years.

Fan#41

For me it was mostly Tim's sound which was so flat during that '03 tour. I've said it 100 times, but D&T opening sets for D&F's were so much better than their full tour earlier that year. Although, there were still some really solid performances sprinkled throughout that acoustic tour like Busted Stuff from 4/4, Bartender from 3/19, etc...

Flu or something. Definitely was a factor, but one of many IMO. I think the energy level falls on Dave and the style he was playing then. Perfect example is Warehouse. He played a baritone acoustic for it, slowed it down, and had much less of an attack on the main riff. Really made for a mellow tour. On the plus side though, it made the jams at the end of Two Step, Nancies, Crush, etc contrast the body of the song extremely powerfully.

I went to my first TR solo acoustic show about 6 months later. While Tim's worst playing is still better than 99% of people's best playing... it was like day and night between the '03 sets.

mjf
01-21-2014, 09:20 AM
Holy shit, the transition into the wail outro on Seek Up is just perfection. Same with the transition into the Reprise outro of Last Stop. Early impression has me agreeing with Jack, this Last Stop is superior for the most part to 3.13

wasn't tim recovering from being pretty seriously ill in spring 2003? thought i had heard that. wonder if he wasn't 100% on that tour.

Flu or something. Definitely was a factor, but one of many IMO.

The thing is though his playing was fine. Whenever I bring up that opinion of how Tim sounded in '03 peoples first reaction is bringing up Tim being sick but he was still PLAYING great. My problem was with his sound. It was very flat. Like I said there were still some great performances but overall, with how flat his guitar sounded, it just turned me off to a lot of those '03 shows. What's the one we have that was released, 3/28 I think? A lot of people really love that show but for me, I think I listened to it once. I mean, I think the fact that he was supposedly VERY ill that tour makes it all the more impressive with how he was playing and with all those shows they did. My problem was with how flat his sound was which really has nothing to do with him being sick.

But when you listen to those D&F's openers his sound is much more bright and full.

And as far as ranking the D&T tours, it's a tough one for me because '96 was so special but the next two tours ('97, '99) had much more variety of sets because there were more songs/covers to choose from. BUT, in '99 Tim relied so much more on effects than he did during those '96 shows and most of that '97 tour.

So as far as full tours are concerned, I think I would still rank them as they happened.

1) '96
2) '97
3) '99
4) '03

As far as best D&T show goes...I don't know. Luther is so strong. I would say 12/12/93, 2/21/94, 8/25/94, 2/6/96, 2/18/96, 2/21/97, and 3/7/99 are all in the running for being the best, imo. Of course there are many single-song performances that are tucked away in random shows that are some of the best, but as far as full shows, I still stick with those.

TheNoise

This made me appreciate just how damn good Coluzzi's pull from 3-13 is too

Generally not huge on D&T but halfway through I'm enjoying this. However... good lord Stay sucks on this. I'd never listened to the 6/8 version. What a shitshow. The rest is top notch, though.

I love it. It's different and unique. It's not like they messed with a favorite song of mine. It's Stay. Cut out the rest of the band, and it's just Stay without the rest of the band (if that makes any sense). This is interesting. I'll take something interesting that's a bit of a mess over boring any day. Thankfully there is a regular version for you.

Most importantly though, looking at the list of shows that Stay was played in 6/8, if you have never heard this, you are missing a few major shows and more than a handful of great shows. You should hit a few more while you're in a 99 D&T mood:

2.13 and 2.14 kind of go hand in hand, solid AUD tapes
2.17 & 2.19 are great shows, with great tapes
3.7 and 3.13 are obvious legendary shows

It's definitely different, I'll give you that.

Thanks for the recommendations. I can't imagine I didn't listen to 3/13 back in the day, so I must have blocked out Stay. I'll check out some of those others sometime.

I don't get the hate for the 6/8 Stay. I don't see anything wrong with it.

I agree with Rob. Even if it's not your cup of tea, at the very least the 6/8 Stay performances are something different and unique. I don't think they're amazing or anything but it's definitely fun to see Dave approach one of his own songs in a different time signature and roll with it for more than one performance.

I don't either. But the more I listen to it I have more & more of a problem with how the 2/19/96 lt sounds.

Also, I've always enjoyed these Stays as well.

I did anyways think 24 had a much better and better mix than 23.

This might be the best officially released Stone. Period.

It falls JUST shy of the Charlie Rose performance for me.

Though, I will say this point is pretty amazing. In 1999 Dave played Stone to such a high level that this statement can be made and it is hard to really argue with. Since then it feels like he has, to some extent, screwed up every single acoustic performance of this song.

I truly agree. I definitely think some are better than others from that tour, but all are significantly better than most since.

Here's my favorite, 2.5.99 -

http://www.sendspace.com/file/z2abv1

I think it is superior to this release vocally. Could just be in my head, but IMO the best versions of the song it is clear Dave is really into the lyrics and the vocal performance really matches the theme of the lyrics. This is one of those versions, just like Charlie Rose. Again, might just be in my head but I feel like most versions today he's going through the motions and has lost that connection he seemed to have to the lyrics in these early ones.

Same buddy

My only complaint really is the tracking. There is literally no logical reason for the way it is. Out of every live release I've ever heard, I can't name one that did that on every track (minus a small story relating to the song, and not about boogers or Afrin).

How did you guys fix it? I use VLC player and haven't tried to mess with fixing it yet
