LIVE TRAX 34: 6.24.1999 DEER CREEK MUSIC CENTER, NOBLESVILLE, IN

In 2015 DMB will play their 35th show at Klipsch Music Center, making it their third most visited amphitheatre. We are pleased to announce June 24, 1999 as the 34th volume of the Live Trax series and celebrate this essential Summer Tour stop. This is the first show released from the venue formally called Deer Creek Music Center and closes the three-night run. This is also the first Live Trax release of the 1999 Summer Tour, which featured the still recent Before These Crowded Streets repertoire mixed with deeper cuts from the catalog.

Opening with an older run of songs highlighted by LeRoi Moore's stunning work on Jimi Thing, The Best of What's Around and Proudest Monkey, the band shift into the dark Daniel Lanois cover For the Beauty of Wynona - one of the last full band versions and released only once before in the Live Trax series. The show's climax begins with a version of Granny with Dave singing unique improvised lyrics before an abruptly-ended Warehouse and set closing Ants Marching. Following an expanded version of Typical Situation, Dave takes Drive In, Drive Out to another level of intensity that just has to be heard; a perfect encore to end a fantastic run at Deer Creek.

We have selected a third disc of bonus material from June 22 and 23, 1999 at Deer Creek that includes songs that had then been recently reinserted into set lists such as Cry Freedom and #40. The package concludes with a version of The Last Stop that you won't be able turn up loud enough.

Please Note: This item is available for pre-order. CDs will ship on or around July 14th. Downloads will be available July 17th.

Less than a month ago I was saying how I overlooked this tour and was dying to dive into it. I can't friggin wait. When I got into trading, very very few '99 shows were recommended to me but from what I've been listening to recently I can't wait

Absolutely top notch and fresh pick, but no surprise there considering the likely driving force behind it. Another fantastic bonus disc too.

So was Dave using the Martin like on LS at this point in the tour? I love his sound to death on that disc and am crossing my fingers this will be another one

I also wish we could have had a bit more BTCS; Pig or Stone from night one might have been great. Though for all I know, Boyd ruined them and these are better choices.

I wasn't at Deer Creek in '99, but I hit night 1 of Polaris (6.18) and Riverbend (6.20) that year, and I only remember the Chet. Now, that was 16 years ago and I have a terrible memory, but those were my first and second DMB shows, so I have a better than average recollection of them.

:upyours It makes no sense, they sound utterly horrendous yet my two favorite tours ('95/ fall '98) wouldn't be the same without it. Something about that muddy flat tone that cuts through everything gave those shows such an energetic feel, and such a unique sound

That's what made it a stand out show in 1999, though. You got the rarities for 1999 like Typical, Granny, Jane, Wynona, Proudest and Nancies because the sets weren't full of BTCS. Honestly more BTCS would have made the bonus disc if it wasn't for You Know Who. It is a shame that a 99 release couldn't have Pig.

They weren't randomly selected. The highlights are the full #40 (light accompaniment by Stefan and Carter), a very good Two Step, and whoever wrote the write up did not lie about The Last Stop. There's a 5 minute silence before it because Dave went through 2 guitars before getting one that worked and he took his rage out on it.

Really sweet release. Summer '99 tends to get overlooked for obvious reasons but there are really nice shows from it including this one. And :upyours to the Chet and Martin talk. I haven't liked Daves sound since he went to the Taylor and especially now with the Gibson acoustics he's been using. The Chet cut through the mix better and the Martin was perfect for their sound ala Listener Supported. Part of the complaint of not hearing Dave at shows stems from his guitar choice, not just mixing. Though last night I could hear him more than normal.

I think he was referring to some of the really rough Boyd performances scattered through out the year, which ultimately killed those particular shows. And the fact that yes it's sandwiched between revered tours.

Yeah, I've always thought this too. They had Boyd re-record and overdub his parts for the Live in Chicago release and that was 15 years ago. At best he could come in and do that if needed, but I guess it's easier to just find a show where he was more in point.,

How much confidence do we have that his overdubs in 2015 would be better than his playing in 1999?

Anyway, I'd rather they eliminate those shows/songs than "fix" them. I hate it when bands do that.

I was under the impression he meant we generally skip listening to shows from '99 because a good portion of them fall short mostly because of Boyd.

I'm still not sold on the rumor that this actually happened. Without a doubt there were major touch-ups and such done to some of Boyd's solos for that release but the idea that they made him go into a booth and record solos for a live release...eh. Especially for a band with so many options to choose for a release, it just makes no sense.

Yeah, I'm just stating the rumor for people who forgot or didn't know, but I also find it hard to believe they'd do that. Not sure where that rumor started or if it had any truth to it, but they def did something to those solos it appears. Considering it was only the second full band love release at the time it's possible they decided to fix it,.. Because either hey had already announced they were releasing it to the public or Beacuse the rest of the show was too good NOT to release because of Boyd.

No it's def Boyd, but like I said, he probably went into a studio a re-recorded it, and maybe the spliced the two versions together in post (very possible to do for someone with lots of experience doing it, not that difficult to make it sound like the same solo.)

Yea, that's what I remember reading many years ago.

Yeah when you listen to the release his solos sound very reverb'd out, which is usually a recording technique when you want to take a part and blend it into the background of the mix. So if Boyd figured out what he was playing originally by listening to be recording and then replayed it, the engineer would have just taken the best parts of each, and used reverb to make it sound like they its just one solo. Hard to explain but that's what it sounds like to me.

Oddly used it for the entire set on 7/5, including 12-string songs.

What songs did he use it on at 7/9? Or what songs in general were the Chet songs that year?

I remember Recently. Also always used on Stay iirc.

This makes me happy.

Any chance they're giving us the Heartbeat with that Rapunzel track? I'm guessing not.

I want this thing now. Haven't felt that way about an LT since 23 I think.

On 7/9 the Chet was used on everything except True Reflections, Tripping Billies, Watchtower, Sweet Up & Down and Grey St. So 13 of the 18 songs that night were on the Chet. That number would dwindle with each passing Stadium show up until 7/25/00 where it was used on one or two songs, never to be seen again.

I wonder if Dave still remembers and associates his Chet guitar with the band's early career. Like I wonder if he has the Chet mounted on a wall at his house and it reminds him of the old days. It would suck if it were chucked in his attic with other boxes.

I gurantee dave has nothing from his career in his house. Maybe some pictures of places or of him and some south african musicians. Big pic of him and trey & a huge pile of blow, obvi. The chets are all relegated to the corner of some c'ville warehouse. Like in Raiders of the lost arc. Dave was like, "coran, where are my SST's?" "Don't worry david, they're being worked on by top men." "Top men?" "Top men."

I always wonder about the Chet too. You've got to think he kept one lying around somewhere, if not in a house in some warehouse at least. He's never been seen playing it ever since 2000 though, even in that video of round and round a while back he was playing some other kind of guitar. I'm sure he has a ton of guitars, but I guess the Chet is no more.

The next person who meets him needs to ask him that question. I really want to know A) why did he stop using it all together B) will he ever consider playing it again?

I think the "why did he stop using it?" question probably has an answer that relates to the fact that the acoustics he's been using since 1999 all sound better than the Chet for 99% of the songs.

It definitely did, but it wasn't a good one. It has this thick, muddy tone that didn't serve the bounce and drive of most songs. I loved it too, at the time, but comparatively, I haven't missed it once since it's been gone.

Dude this is a fun watch.

Question: so this is around the time of the transition to ears. Looks like Carter and Roi pioneered this (though by listener supported I think a few more were using them). Did everybody get two wedges back in the day? Were they in stereo? Were Carter's next to him as could be anticipated?

In any case, this was an awesome watch. Really enjoyed watching what Fenton came up with now that he could spend real money (movers and some LEDs on a fuckton of truss).

Are you talking about the IEMs? Boyd, Carter and Roi were the first to start using them, then Dave. Stefan was the last hold-out. They started using them in '98. Not for every show but a good number of them. IIRC, you can see some of them wearing/using them at the Tabernacle show on 4/21/98. The exact day they all started using them consistently? I don't know. If I had to guess it would probably the beginning of the '00 tour. I remember Stefan wasn't using his all the time towards the end of '99.

here's a good one from 2000: http://www.mixonline.com/news/profiles/dave-matthews-band-pacific-bell-park/374000

and here's just some other info from the same magazine:

DAVE MATTHEWS BAND

Engineer: Jeff Thomas

The Dave Matthews Band is the most successful touring group inAmerica right now and they're very serious about recording andarchiving their shows, which they periodically release on CD such aslast year's Live at Folsom Field two-CD package, a forthcomingset from The Gorge in Washington and various DVD-Video releases.
From Matthews' new studio outside Charlottesville, Va., engineerJeff Thomas described the group's live recording setup: “Everyshow on tour is redundantly multitracked,” he explains. “Werun 48 tracks of 24-bit, 48k audio, and we do it on two differentformats: Tascam DA-78 tape re-corders and MX-2424 hard disk recorders. The 78 tape is considered the redundant backup tape. Then we mail offthe hard drive to a gentleman in Charlottesville who does adata-transfer service for us; he transfers all of the data to compactdisc, which creates a very long-term stable storage format for themultitrack audio. We use about 100 to 120 compact discs per show, whichsounds like a lot — and it is — but megabytes per dollar,it's the most cost-effective and time-stable [method] you can use. Wevacuum-seal it in these heavy-duty food bags to remove air and we sealit in a PVC tube that protects it physically. Mitsui is the supplier ofthe CD media and they guarantee us over 100 years of shelf-life,storing it at 70°, 40-percent relative humidity. During thetransfer, there's [also] two different tape-drive formats — AIT-3cartridge and On-Stream cartridge — that we make, and that's goodfor five to eight years. We also make a DAT reference and a compactdisc reference of every show, so if we need to look at the songs playedor a quick check of the performance of the show, we've got that insimple form.” The different media are stored in three differentlocations.
Thomas says the feed for the multitracks is “anontransformer-isolated split off a snake. We use API 212 mic preamps. We've modified the output transformer to give us a dual-output line, soone output goes to the DA-78 and one goes to the MX-24s.” Asbefits such a serious operation, the DMB records four tracks ofaudience for maximum flexibility later.
Until recently, Ryan Nichols ran the group's live recordingoperation, and Thomas notes, “It's definitely its own job.Everything has to be shipped out the next day, and the transfer processoccurs within two to three days of the show; then the disks are shippedback to us. We have 25 to 30 hard disks that rotate between shows ontour.” Where do they keep the recorders? “The machines havebeen all over the place,” Thomas says. “We've had them inmonitor world; at front-of-house for many years. Now, we've got themonstage.”
- See more at: http://www.mixonline.com/news/profiles/recording-

Quackenbush says his experience with Sensaphonics goes back to 2003, when he was hired as front-of-house engineer and production manager for Robert Randolph and the Family Band. Because the band couldn’t budget for a traveling monitor engineer, Quackenbush found himself mixing both FOH and monitors from the main console. The group was opening for Dave Matthews Band, and Randolph had just ordered a pair of Sensaphonics 2X-S.
“Robert was really into IEMs, so I suggested we try putting everyone on them,” Quackenbush recalls. “I talked to Ian Kuhn, Dave Matthews’ monitor engineer, about it, and he told me how much soft earpieces helped in making that transition a smooth one for his band. The silicone absorbs your body heat and actually gets more pliable. After a few minutes, you can’t even tell that it’s in. Much more comfortable for long sets, plus they give better isolation than hard acrylic.”

I can't speak to the differences between the models he used, but I vaguely remember reading something a very long time ago about his Chets and they were not factory models. He and his techs heavily modified them. Now, whether he modified the different guitars in different ways, I don't know.

None of them were stock. He had a Fishman installed in all his Chet's. "Modifications to the neck" was always a line I heard but never knew more details on that. The natural first showed up in '99 as far as I know and the black was back for its limited use in 2000.

Funny, I did the opposite. I started wanting the Live Trax in physical form when they had the regular $7 deals. I bought I think 10 during that period, and now I feel compelled to complete them and keep going. They'll look nice on the shelf together.

I ordered discs of these, obviously. However I won't have them the day they release for the drive up to Creek, I'm sure so I'll have to see someone about some things. I ordered a few copies. Posters were 100% legit. He said he was including the actual setlist he got from the "soundguy" or something but didn't have a pic in the auction. Wasn't that big of a gamble, I think he listed the posters like $20-$30 over the market value so I said fuck it. Was not only a photocopy, he didn't even cut it out to make it the same size as the real one :lol Oh well, was worth the headache to get those posters at face

Crazy to think how many setlists like 2/6 and earlier are probably stuffed in a dusty box of the shit from someone's old dormroom. I managed to score a sweet '97 D&T poster awhile back actually from a guy that had found it amongst his old college stuff. It was laminated unfortunately but I'm glad it didn't get thrown out/lost like I bet so much of this stuff has

And that was during Rate-Gate

Took me a solid minute to get that :lol very jealous man, I hope I find some of the ones I've been searching for someday

I only buy the CDs because my wife likes me to order the accompanying shirt for her. Plus I've found with standard shipping usually arrives before the release date...... And Java always finds a way to make downloading a nightmare.

Really stoked for this release. Never heard the AUD but based on what people are saying there are some epic standouts.

I love these links and wish there was so much more. I'd love to read about the newer system and the earlier systems as well. They have a pretty copious outline of their gear on the band site :upyours

I appreciate everyone that spent money on this one instead of just downloading. Hopefully it goes a long way toward showing our interest in these types of releases.

I did see a Warehouse board post when this was announced that said these releases keep getting worse and worse, so it probably all evens out, but whatever.

:upyours I used to always purchase the physical discs, but somewhere along the way stopped due to some of the releases. Now I'll probably only buy the CDs if it is one of the CD/DVD combos at Christmas or a show I was at, and start doing the digital download options for great picks like these. The DMB fan base is so all over the place, and that is expected because of them being a band that has toured and played so long, and then put that with the completely different type of albums they put out in regards to Everyday, Stand Up, and BW.

It's just sad to think about sometimes, that following this band from the early 90's to now, when I'm at show like I was at on Tuesday that people are so disinterested in Dreaming Tree being played and begging for a song like Bayou to be played.

I really think he has served his purpose in this band. Roi took him under his wing in '05 - '07 and Ross stepped up in '08 with Roi's passing and helped get Jeff up to speed on that tour. In my mind he has been in this band about 7 tours too many.

Just finished the actual show. '99 has never been one of my favorite tours, even though it was my first year seeing them (in fact, I was at Riverbend right before the Deer Creek run, but couldn't do Deer Creek because of some sort of scheduling problem). This show, however, brought back some great memories of that period. It was a great choice and has some spectacular stuff on it. Jimi, PM, the entire run between Wynona (which is definitely the stand-out performance here for me) and STJL and the encore are all ones for the books.

For the record, they really hooked us up on this bonus disc. The show itself is just over two hours spread over the two discs. The bonus disc is an hour and 10 minutes by itself. Listening to it now, and Rapunzel is a little show to start, but Roi kills it at the end. On Cry Freedom at this moment, and I really forget how much I love this song sometimes.
