LIVE TRAX 39: 10.31.1998 THE ARENA IN OAKLAND, OAKLAND, CA

1998 was a banner year for Dave Matthews Band. In April, they released their third studio album, Before These Crowded Streets, to critical acclaim and toured almost the entire rest of the year to support it. The Fall Tour is among the most well-regarded tours in the bandís history and we return to it now with one of the most noteworthy nights Ė October 31, 1998 from the Oakland Arena. (To this day, it's the only Halloween concert that DMB have played.)

This show has long been hailed a classic and every performance is a highlight. Long-time collaborators Tim Reynolds on guitar and Greg Howard on Chapman Stick join the band for the full set. And saxophone virtuoso, Joshua Redman, makes his first and only appearance with the band to guest on Jimi Thing and the rare Iíll Back You Up. The audience of costumed fans are rewarded for their efforts with a pulsating performance of Halloween, in addition to a moving Dreaming Tree, and a Chapman Stick solo for the Watchtower Intro. This stand-out performance is a must-have for any Live Trax collection.

Please note - DMB Live Trax is available for pre-order and will ship on or around November 1. Downloads will be available on November 4.

Hard to argue with fall '98 shows getting released, but I'm pretty surprised by this. We just got a fall '98 show last year, and I'm really more into Dec '98, but it will be nice getting a '98 DT with Greg Howard and a killer Jimi with Joshua Redman, so really no complaints. Certainly not my first pick and can't say I'm "excited", but I'll take it. Hopefully it's better than the last '98 show released...that one had an incredible last stop, but was pretty bland otherwise.

Description changed from "only" Halloween show to "last." I listened to the AUD last week, and my ears adjusted to it, but you couldn't hear Greg Howard unless it was his long Watchtower intro solo. I really liked it, a lot more than I remembered. Really every song was bleeding energy. He gave a bit of the Golden Years at the end of Too Much, that he hadn't done full band since '96, and didn't again until '04.

this. i'm not quite at 98 shows, but that was top 5 best concert experience of anyone for me. Absolutely crazy night at the ol rosemont horizon.

also, it was so much better having this show in rosemont instead of the united center. really cool arena venue - wooden ceiling helps with the acoustics. very little suites so the upper deck is right on the stage.

While not LT quality, the most recent version of 2.24.95 out there is really good.

Also, you of what is left for must have shows has some big holes in it. 6.8.97, 6.10.97, a few Sept 00 shows, 7.26.95, 8.20.95, 3.7.99 to name just a few. Point being there are a lot of great shows that I would still consider must have at some point.

It's the only thing I will listen to from that year. If you haven't heard it, I highly recommend.

Deer Creek was pretty decent that year, even with all the crap from Stand Up. That Watchtower was one of the best things I've ever seen from the band.

Also, I want to be excited about this (and quite frankly, I am) but it just kind of annoys me because it just seems too little too late. Shows like this should have been released years ago. It shouldn't have taken 12 years since the inception of the LT series to release what has always been considered classic shows.

I definitely get what you're saying, and I don't necessarily disagree with you. In fact, shows like this make some of the earlier picks even less defensible. But at the same time, knowing that they have exciting shows still to release and that they are still at least occasionally looking to them does help to keep me caring about this series going forward.

I can't wait for 12/7/98 to be released on August 17th, 2022! Or 6/8/97 on December 8th, 2019! But what I'm most excited for is 9/2/00 when it's officially announced for a June 30th, 2024 release! And in between all those exciting things to look forward to, we can most certainly look forward to a "sleeper" show that no one ever talks about because it's a run-of-the-mill performance from that particular year! And sprinkled in between all that yummy goodness we can really enjoy the true gems of shows that just took place 6 months prior to the release date! OH and of course anymore shows that we don't have recordings for, I can't wait for those because the music itself totally doesn't matter as long as we have the recording to catalog away in the collection!

Aside from being a pessimistic bitch about it, again, there is a part of me excited for this release. I'm sure there will be one release soon that....

This doesn't make any sense to me. You're disappointed that they're releasing this show because you want them to have already released it? I agree with that, but that's being disappointed with the Live Trax series as a whole, not being disappointed with this release.

As a fan of a football team who's been horrible for years (Redskins), I get excited when they do well because I'm a fan of theirs. I would never say, "Oh, they won a game? That's kind of a bummer because they should have been winning all along."

But when your fandom is continuously fading away, it makes perfect sense to think "oh wow, they're finally releasing stuff that i probably would have been super psyched about years ago" and being disappointed that it in a series that should been releasing shows like this all along. I don't think it's an equal comparison to sports, but whatever. Doesn't seem that obtuse of an opinion to me.

LT 1 - same
LT 2 - 6/8/97
LT 3 - same
LT 4 - 12/3/98
LT 5 - same
LT 6 - 8/7-8/03
LT 7 - same
LT 8 - same or 7/10/04
LT 9 - 10/31/98
LT 10 - 9/2/00

Would have been awesome had they nailed this series at every turn. But I'm happy with what we've been given.

To close off the 25th year of DMB I wish they'd do something wild with DMBLive or Live Trax though, like a huge box set. Like the RSO shows, or a weekend of Gorge shows plus a DVD, or just a random full week of great shows from 93 or Sep 00.

So basically, imagine swapping out every release that isn't your favorite with shows that are. Wouldn't that be awesome? Of course. Should it just switch to the "Live Trax 1995 - 2004 Series Except Shows That a Subsection of Fans Don't Like?" Diversity, but only to a point and as long as fits our narrow requirements? Obviously I want more classics, who doesn't. But this release shines brighter in a larger spectrum. This show wasn't better two years ago than it is now. If anything, it's better now.

1) this show really isn't that classic of a show tbh. It's good, but not at the level of "we need this" as many many many others.

2) We got a ton of classic shows when the LT series started so it didn't take them that long. In the first 10 releases we got 12.08.98, 12.31.96, GGP, etc. also some mind scratchers like LT4 and what not, and the band still needs to marke their current sound/product too, so some of them had to be from recent tours. The point is that there have been tons of great shows, and hidden gems released in this series alresdy, and 10.31.98 isn't even in my top 20 of shows I want released.

Well I've been around since '00 and seen shows since '03 and I definitely don't remember it being a wanted show. But I know you've been around longer so I'll take your word for it. I mean it certainly doesn't have the aura of 12.31.96 or 12.07.98 or 12.03.98 which anyone who is on a

I also don't want to take anything away from this release though, I'm sure it's going to be really good because you can't go wrong with '98. Celluloid saying that it was an exciting show but one we "don't nessecarily need right now" is a pretty spot on description.

They're gonna be milking live releases for at least another 20 years. They don't have that many great shows to release them all at once and they probably aren't going to be playing 'classic' shows in the future. Seems pretty logical to me that they would sprinkle in the highly coveted shows

I just did a google search to see if Tim had a show on that date and came across a random tape list with someone who says they have a sbd>dat dat of the 1/14/97 d&t tour opener. Not sure if anyone cares enough to try and get this. Only dm tape on their list and that is usually how these things pop up. Especially now. Even the aud we have (def nothing that an experienced trader such as this would mistake for a sbd iirc) is not dat > wav and has a cd gen in it.

True, but there is zero reason to release that msg show. Red Rocks (notice that stand includes almanac tour rarity rankings 1, 2, 3 and 4!) and the #34 bust out are the only worthy memories of that '05 tour. And we have them all officially released. Let move on and pretend it never happened.

We need 06.05.05 "Sting" Two Step before we can say goodbye to '05, a completely unique performance that has never been repeated. Jam starts at 6:30 (and is worth watching the whole thing IMO) but if you can't be bothered to sit through all of it then skip to the 13 minute mark and enjoy the next 3 mins:

Would Too Much be a track we'd use to gauge how Tim/Greg Howard sound anyway?

i mean... tim has extremely prevalent parts on too much. it's the driving guitar sound on the album version, and the driving sound on the live in chicago version... i'm not saying that too much is the track that we'd use to gauge if tim was "on" or not that night or if he's "killing it or sucking" the parts themselves are pretty standard and not terribly flashy ... but as far as just hearing his placement in the mix, it's as good of a track as any

I could hear Greg in there just fine (he's mixed hard right). The thing is he's not really doing anything exciting on that song. Tim definitely seems low, but again, that could be the song. Thanks TambourineMan, those worked for me.

Clips sound pretty good, not the best mix but certainly not the worst. Definitely don't hear Tim at all on Billies, strange. Really not a fan of the way the drums sound either, very thin and sounds like they put a really long decayed reverb on that snare drum. Kind of bothers me a little bit. Dave's guitar might be the worst part of the mix. Sounds horrifying. Like a super compressed, super treble-y sound, not very acoustic sounding in any way, shape or form. (I know the Chet doesn't ever sound as good as his other guitars, but it's particularly bad here.) Dave vocals sound crisp, clear and upfront though.

You obviously very savvy in this department, but did you log out on your phone and computer. Try a different account. I have had this error before on my pc, logged out of everything and d/l'd on my Mac.

Also, I think MT customer service could help you reset it if nothing else works.

This happened to me when I clicked the zip file, it takes about 5 seconds to start downloading. If you're like "did I really click that?" and click it again or a third time before the download starts, when it starts, it validates and thinks you downloaded it too many times. Happened to me with Sweetbriar.

I just don't think he plays all that much on all of the songs. I'm also used to Tim being cranked way up and his playing over the top. He started this tour playing really tastefully. Few effects, learning where his role was in each song. I do wish he was a little louder, but you can hear all the instruments including Dave's guitar. Not the best for me, not distracting, either.

I'm only up to Rapunzel, but I don't have any major problem with the mix. Tim is definitely low, but it seems like pretty much everybody else is mixed nicely. It's not a deep mix, everything is pretty much up front, but for this tour that's fitting, I think.

Performance-wise, this band is a fireball. I'm loving being able to hear Greg Howard's contributions. He tears up the end of Rapunzel.

It's not tough to sit through by any means, I just think it's pretty average and a little canned.

Live In Chicago just doesn't really count -- didn't Boyd re-record his parts in the studio?

That was also what, their 2nd ever live release?

I never have seen anyone complain about LT1 though. Though, just that the vinyl was cut from the CDDA. Do people hate LT3 mix as well? I think that one is fantastic.

I've heard people say LT1 isn't their favorite mix, but not that it is shitty. I've heard many more people complain about LiC. And yes, boyd re-recorded parts on that one. Also, there was the alternate #41 mix that was released on some magazine sampler that sounds so much better.

Lt3 I think is still considered one of the better mixes of any lt show.

LT1 definitely has a bad mix. It's muddled and loses a lot. I'm not a fan of the LiC mix either, but aside from the fact that it buries Victor almost completely, I've come to be a lot more forgiving toward that one. After finishing LT39, I definitely agree that it's flat, and there's not enough Tim, but overall pretty much everything I need to hear is where it needs to be. It's not the best, by any measure, but I'm happy with it.
