Yeah, you're probably right that it's night 1 songs. While a disc of MSG tracks from over the years would be cool, I wouldn't want that to preclude them from releasing any of those shows in the near future.

There are 8 other shows in the winter tour, so I'm guessing 1 song per show. Here's my ideal picks not repeating any from msg2:

1. One Sweet World (12/10)
2. Crush (12/11)
3. Captain (12/13)
4. You Never Know (12/14)
5. Lie In our Graves (12/16)
6. Jimi Thing (12/17)
7. Warehouse (12/20)
8. Two Step (12/22)

Well fuck me

Do they even have HD footage from 2002 though?

They do, the entire Gorge 2002 set was filmed in HD.

However the video material for LT40 is standard definition. Why would you consider Blu-ray? Couple reasons: 1) the surround track will be lossless which is pretty big for me as the surround mixes always have less dynamic range compression; 2) the 40 Mbps bandwidth and more efficient AVC/MPEG-4 video codec found on Blu-ray allows for far less compression resulting in a much cleaner picture with less artifacting (pixelation, macroblocking, poor shadow detail) than is found with DVD's @ 4-6 Mbps encodings.

I have Dire Straits Alchemy on Blu-ray, that's a much older video recording but it's absolutely worth the Blu.

I'm also a fan of 12/10 and 12/14's renditions of Bartender. Wouldn't mind the 12/14 You Never Know (the only one of the winter tour,) as well. Captain and Warehouse from the MSG N1 show and I believe there was a Granny opener somewhere later in the tour that I enjoyed, as well, despite Granny being fairly standard.

Yes, my understanding is they set up the James Brown appearance weeks in advance and had rehearsed it in sdck a few times.

It only barely leaked out the day before. I had friends calling me after N1 telling me to get up to NYC for N2, saying they didn't know exactly what, but something was planned and it would be amazing.

I ordered this but the Store really needs to fix a lot of their errors before they roll something out. Their page still says Live Trax 37 and the checkout page doesn't specifically list which of the choices (blu ray, dvd, etc) that you actually picked AND it lists a spot for just a CD even though it looks like there's only a 2-CD option. I also am not sure if I properly ordered the 8-song bonus Trax vs. the 5-song one since all it says is "Public" disc, which leads me to believe I am getting a 5-song one despite being a Warehouse member?
Edit: I called them and the last mistake was made by me since I didn't login to my Warehouse account before ordering, but the woman at the Store said she would send a message to update all the other mistakes I pointed out.

I believe it may have been shot with HD cameras, the credits on the DVD and IMDb list "HD video production package" and "Camera equipment provided by" to Big Vision, there is no mention in the technical specs of what cameras were used or the original source so it's kind of a guess unless someone has a close-up shot of a camera who was there...

HD cameras were certainly in use before Y2K.

I was just making a snarky joke. All I meant was that if they're going to screw this up, that'll be the only way they can do it. Personally, I couldn't care less what's on the bonus disc. This show with an 8 track bonus disc and that's about all we need from Winter '02 ever to be satisfied. Finally a great period for the band summed up in one release.

Not much younger than the CP DVD, but for sure. I like how the holiday release this year is ACTUALLY a holiday period show...not just a random show from a summer tour or something. Makes more sense to release a Winter Dec show.

Yeah.

I have always maintained that when James Brown came out and then when they went into Halloween were the 2 loudest moments I've ever experienced at a DMB show. Crowd was CRAZY into both of those.

This.

In 2002 Halloween was still very much a rarity, too. That was such an awesome moment.

I was behind the stage for this show, so had a unique viewpoint of the stage and crowd... it actually enhanced the experience for me, I think. Still have some vivid memories of specific moments from this night. Now I'm excited to see what it looked like from in front of the stage.

I did the Albany>MSG>DC run to close out the tour. So much fun.

I wasn't the only one who thought CVille was going to be the holiday live Trax. Based on the trend they had of realeasing shows from the most recent year and the fact it was a 25th anniversary show and the whole sha-bang, I'm honestly really really surprised it wasn't released yet. The band must not have ok'd it..maybe they didn't like how they played the new songs or the show in general, I just find it hard to beleive They had no intention of releasing it.

They haven't done one I don't beleive since wrigley field, I know LT32 had a DVD can't remember if it was an in store release. Either way, it's been a long time, and a 25th anniversary show is the perfect reason to do it. I'm not sure if the ship has sailed on that or not, wouldn't make much sense to me to release a 25th year show the following year, defeats the purpose. Though if they're looking for a way to keep casual people interested in the band in 2017 during the break, that's probably a good time to release something like that so maybe they'll wait on it

Yup, and to think of all the MSG shows, we felt this was longest shot to get released due to James Brown.

Great show, I was behind the stage that night. I'm pre-ordering the Blu-Ray/CD, though I'll probably never get around to watching it.

What makes you not view it in high regard? It's about as good as '02 DMB gets, no? I mean it's certainly overhyped because of the whole James brown thing, but it's a far better show than say, 10/31/98

At the very least I think it would be pretty cynical to not say this is a "big show" even if for whatever reason a person didn't like the show itself. Some shows are their own event and stand above maybe the sum of their parts. This one fits that I think. It's not just a really good show in a good tour like LT34 or 35. They're going a bit all-out on this. First MSG release, skipping over the annual current tour show for the first time since 2013, blu ray for the first time, the amount of effort it must have taken to sign off for the guests (though I assume Karl Denson as the opening act was part of their contract). Then on top of that, an under-represented year (first 2002 LT), plus a bonus disc not just slapped together with songs from the night before, but I assume research went into it. Granted I'm not assuming that our research and their research would necessary yield the same results, but there's a lot to be excited about with this release, I think. For a release such as Volume 40, I think they did what they could. Hopefully the bonus disc lives up, but even if there's one track I like, it's more than I got with LT39.

Hope the tour sampler continues, but honestly there's nothing else from this tour that needs to come out, so this was the right show to do it with. This tour had a unique Nancies - Warehouse segue, especially the Tampa opener.

HELL. YES. This was the first show I used stubhub to get into - spent a good chunk of money, but it was worth every single penny. Had tickets in the 400s but made friends with a guard on night 1 and he let me sit in empty seats right behind carter. It's going to be really great to have this night in sbd audio, let alone on DVD/blu-ray.

For me personally, MSG shows I would prefer over this:
1. 12/3/98
2. 12/2/98
3. 12/13/00
4. 12/12/00
5. 10/3/96
I'd slot this one in next just before 4/14/09, but that's close.

Some of the above, admittedly, might be slight attendance bias (I was at most of those, but not at this show).

But I do think this is a very good release and am happy we're getting it.

This is a really great call for 40. It's never been my favorite show, but it's absolutely a "big" one, and the blu ray for it is cool. I think for the bonus disc, I'd want:

Still a solid 2002 show, a year that's been neglected in terms of releases. Sure you could make an argument for a spring or late summer show, but this is not a bad pick by any means.

Are there any MSG shows that came AFTER this one that anyone would prefer? The contenders are obviously 12/10/05, 9/10/08, 4/14/09, 11/13/10 and 12/17/03 D&F. I don't think anyone prefers any of these to 2002 n2. So, at least we're getting the best MSG show of the past 15 years.

I place some importance on the DVD and bonus disc too. All together, this release really seems like it'll capture a little tour that everyone pretty unanimously has very fond memories of, between the outrage of the ED era and the band's 2005 collapse (which many would argue they never recovered from, given Roi died right when they were recovering).

This was a great pick for a release. I don't think anyone can actually complain about it. and that is impressive. It may not be what I would have wanted as my #1 msg show, but this will satisfy way more people and move way more units. Then factor in them finally getting back on the train with BD is pretty cool. And even though this show wasn't filmed in HD, as Doby said, there are still more than enough reasons to want the bd.

I always felt this was more of a 'had to be there' moment. Like Two Step in teh RAiN!1!!!! And when the video came out a few months ago it didn't change my opinion. It was cool, but nothing you're going to relisten to. Still, even without that it is a pretty interesting setlist. But, we're getting a pro shot BD, so you can almost be there. And that is cool of them. So, I'll buy it.

But I would definitely take 12/17/03 over this. Even though that was not the best show of that tour, we have so much dmb released, and I'd listen to/watch that way more.

The crowd goes nuts for Halloween obviously due to its rarity at the time, but it's actually not a great version, Dave pretty much mumbles the lyrics from what I remember and you can tell they didn't rehearse it at all. An awesome moment for sure, but don't see it translating to a DVD.

I have backed up a lot of my discs but recently I am having issues with blurays, DVDs work perfect.
Not sure if it's a new copywrite protection or something else.

Why is this important, I don't own a bluray player anymore (outside of my external computer drive) and load everything into iTunes, so if I can't rip it then it's worthless to me.

A pretty great Seek Up indeed. I do beleive this show is easily a top 20 show in the bands career and you could argue it scratching the top 10

If you want to be fair and only stick to the eras (1.0, 2.0, 3.0) which i would tend to do, I don't think it's fair to compare a '13 show to anything pre '00. Etc. in terms of 2.0 (which I would say is roughly '99-'07) this is probably a top 3 show from that era.

I guess its kind of like... you know what... I'm not even going to go there. Thank god it ends tomorrow.

I don't know anyone that still buys DVDs or has a DVD player, let alone a blue ray player. Does PS4 play blu Ray discs? If so awesome. If not, I don't see many people buying it

What about it? Are you looking for digital download video? What I'm saying is in the future there will be other offers that include a video disc. You have to believe sales of this show will determine whether they produce DVD or Blu Ray or both in the future.

The top 100 selling Blu-ray titles in the US alone throughout 2016 so far have moved 38,659,022 Blu-ray Discs.

According to DEG statistics by end of 2015 44% of US households had at least one Blu-ray Disc player.

I hope it sells. They were obviously reluctant to spend the effort and cost on producing two options, and if people aren't going to buy blu ray for a show that they know is special, I wouldn't expect to see the option in the future.

I hope and expect they will do at least one modern Blu-ray with a true HD source before they decide whether to go back to just CD+DVD. The costs of doing BD are miniscule compared to where they were in 2007 when you needed to move 20,000 units to break even.

There is a reason most hd video sites are streaming, though. Those are huge files people would be d/ling. Obviously still doable, but not so easy. And then what file format do you use? Most video d/ls are tied to a service for ease of use. The average person has no idea how to play an mkv file.

Yep. They could use '.mp4 that most standard players play, but yeah the file would be huge especially if it's HD. You'd be talking about each song taking up roughly 1 GB minimum. Streaming makes sense. They could do a service where people pay for access roc stream everything that would be easier.

Are we positive that the bonus disc will be totally from this tour? I mean they usually are but who knows. I don't think you should be expecting it to be great, they usually drop the ball on that stuff. I'm confident we'll get a loving wings that we want or something along those lines, but you gotta expect some head scratching tracks also, like a random version of a song we already have 100 versions of. Don't expect too much, hopefully be pleasantly surprised

Pretty much what I expected from the bonus disc, some really really nice tracks (that YNK is awesome, The loving wings is good to get, even though it's not as good as 12.14) but there's also a bunch of tracks that we really don't need that I dont have much interest in like another Christmas Song, another Everyday and What You Are etc. But I really dont't care because the actual show they're releasing is SO god damn good, that the bonus disc is just a nice topping.
