Xcacel Remasters

As some of you know, lately I have begun some training in mastering, thanks to the help of a good friend (Jamie from Antsmarching). I am practicing, and it requires time and good ears. I have just a little of those, but still, this is fun for me, and I have decided to train with DMB tunes.

So, I will keep all my remasters in this thread. Many of them will be tunes that are posted in other threads, or have mentioned somewhere as very good. I accept suggestions, of course.
Those tools I am using cannot not turn plum into gold, but can make better what is already quite good. For this reason I won't make any trials with AUDs, unless they have a good quality.

For every post, I will try to make a short description of what was done, and also to include an artwork.

Enjoy!

If you want to know how I processed this, you can go to the spoiler, other ways, you can go directly to the link below for download.
Spoiler:

The tune was probably taken from a YouTube stream. Quality was good, but it could be improved.
In this case, I have applied a Match EQ tool, which is a tool that compares two tracks (they should be similar) and define the best EQ curve that you need to apply to your track to make it similar to the target one. Now, I have chosen as a reference, Captain 2015.7.25 (Alpine Valley extended) which had a good mix.
This is a trick that would horrify any master engineer, but, since I am learning, I though it was a good starting point to notice the differences. This was the matching curve, which I applied with minor corrections.

After that, I have used a Stereo imager, to widen a bit the stereo image, some additional EQ on the side channels with iZotope Ozone, very mild compression only on certain frequencies and a limiter.
The final file was rendered in Apple Music 16 bit lossless format.

Thank you. Can you remaster Live Trax 1? You have the perfectly mixed #41 on the original Warehouse 5 as reference. The snare sounds like a shotgun on Live Trax 1. You can easily isolate drum tracks with AI, is it possible to make this sound better?

I don’t think this is possible, for obvious copyright issues.
There is already around a vinyl remaster of LT1, anyway, which is 100 better than what I could do, and fixes some of those issues

Where could I download that remastered #41?

It's not remastered. That #41 was released on the original Warehouse 5 disc in like 1999 before Live Trax 1 was released

My bad I thought Xcacel had remastered that #41, I knew it was on that Warehouse disc before Live Trax 1

Ok asking hypothetically -

Live Trax 1 the snare sounds like a shotgun. If you used AI source separation to isolate the drum track, could you make it sound nice like the Warehouse 5 version? Leaving pretty much everything else alone except the drums

Live Trax 2 and Live Trax 6 are also some releases that are great shows with horrible mixes

I don’t know.
Theoretically, snare is a transient, so it should quite straightforward to isolate the sound.
I wouldn’t know which effect shall be applied to improve that sound though

I should ask to Djamieb on Ants, who is my reference

Seek Up - 2003.09.11, Hershey, PA

Today I've processed this excellent track, coming from an incredible 2003 show.

If you want to know how I processed this, you can go to the spoiler, other ways, you can go directly to the link below for download.
Spoiler:

The file was given to me few day ago by a kind user of Ants. The file was particularly damaged, with several breaks in the stream, presence of cracks, buzz, clicks and god knows what else.
It took me some time to fix most of those (what was fixable) making use of iZotope RX9, which is an amazing restoration tool.
After I was finished, quality wasn't too bad, and I've dome some mastering with Logic ProX, mainly EQ, multi band compression, de-esser, limiting. I hope you like the result, I couldn't find a way to improve Dave's voice, which is still too low in the mix (it was even lower before, dynamic EQ helped me in that). This is a tremendous version of an iconic tune from an unforgettable era.

The final file was rendered in Apple Music 16 bit lossless format.

LT6 isn't really a great show

I see LT6 getting a ton of love elsewhere - it comes up often on Reddit as a "top" DMB show.

I don't think I've revisited it in 15 years. My memory is that it has a good Grace is Gone and a memorable Break Free?

N2 was a really good show. N1 was fine, I guess. It has Last Stop, so people probably overrate it because of that. Very standard ‘06. I was second row with my wife (then gf) so that was pretty cool.

I think i made this post the other day, but people seem to overrate the version of DMB they first listened to when they became a fan. Casuals who became fans around the 06 timeframe, probably bought the Fenway release. Same with Piedmont Park, that release has a lot of fans. Central Park, Live in Chicago, etc. Its just the fact that it was sold in stores that people latch onto.

Sorry. LT6 is mixed very well. I’m talking the NYE 1997 Hampton show. Horrible mix
