Live Trax Vol. 60: 8.20.95 - Cincinnati Music Hall

8.20.95 Cincinnati Music Hall – Cincinnati, OH

Live Trax Vol. 60 takes us back to 1995, finding the band in the middle of forging a now classic sound; with a twist. David Ryan Harris, who was touring in support of DMB as part of Dionne Farris’ band, sits on electric guitar to add some firepower to Rhyme & Reason and Jimi Thing. Near the end of a segue way laced set, Dave gives a glimpse into the future with a solo acoustic version of an early Raven, with Little Thing folded in throughout. Listening back to this era, with its equal parts intimacy and intensity should be a joy for fans of any era of the band!

The guy on Ants is always 100% correct on these, typically gives a couple days notice on what will be released.

I will be purchasing this one for sure. Got to reward good behavior.

The Show: All around, this balanced set really delivers. '95 was such a strong year for the band. I've always loved the pace Proudest Monkey had this particular year. It really is a fantastic opener. This version has especially nice lyrics. The segue into Satellite, while maybe played out now, was definitely welcomed with open arms back in the day. Drive In Drive Out was still being fleshed out, but Carter does not disappoint one bit. Love hearing Dave writing the lyrics to this one as he went on in '95. There is some interesting Stefan noodling after this one.

Fast forward a bit to Recently, no notable intros and it is in fact truncated but segues wonderfully into Water/Wine as it did frequently that year. This Water/Wine is very country "twangish". Think GIG hoedown. Dave does a little Johnny Cash-esque singing. Very unique, and worth checking out. Moving along, Roi finishes off Lover Lay Down beautifully, David Ryan Harris brings the on Rhyme & Reason and Jimi Thing.

And finally the ultimate highlight of this show: THE ENCORE. Anyone who has not heard this yet, stop what youre doing and download now. The Little Thing/Raven/Little Thing reprise is extremely interesting to hear. Hearing Dave sing that verse of Raven that early in the band's career is just awesome. It's things like this that make the chances of Toy Soldiers ever making it onto a future album not seem so far fetched.
Then of course, one of the greatest show enders: Halloween.

DMBLive desire: Very high. The tape I have isn't horrible, but there are a few dropouts, the biggest one being during Typical Situation. The show is well performed and has some real gems in 41 Police and the early Raven verse, that I feel need to be officially released.

Rating: 5 *

Really great coverart.

God they really suck at merch, though. Will 1000% buy the download, though.
