Agreed. 89-90 Dead is my go to gym music. Prefer the heavier, “punchier” sound this era had. Brent’s playing is especially active. Phil’s bass work is always a plus. His singing, however, is not good in any year.

Does anyone else cringe when they hear (Judge Roy Moore’s favorite song) Mexicali Blues?

didn't go, but watched the webcast. They slayed Greatest Story Ever Told for its first time. A lot of other really top notch performances as well (they love each other, the other one, ship of fools, terrapin, among others). I'm excited to see what else they bust out this tour - glad they're finally bored with playing the same 70-80 songs!

It was pretty good. Not as much fun as a summer night with the whole lot scene at Citi Field, but I enjoy their shows. They don’t really have any replay value for me, though- I’ll be right back to RFK ‘89 when I listen to music later

Watched the webcast too and I'm going to tonight's MSG show, pretty excited. Mayer was super locked in, I thought he played some of the best I've heard him with this band. Shakedown was pretty rough though, SUPER slow and somewhat sloppy. (and in general not a huge fan of how they play that one). Otherwise, thought the rest of the show was pretty killer from webcast. Definitley interested to see some bust outs too. Would love to see them try "So Many Roads" or "It Must Have Been The Roses" personally.

Enjoy. I'd love to hear Mayer take a poke at Foolish Heart.

One of the things I love about late 80's GD is the power and the gravitas with which Jerry delivers many of my favorite lines- the "headlight" verse in IKYR is the best example, and also the "throw me in the jailhouse" verse in Bertha, and this one from 30 years ago yesterday is just one of so many examples. If you can't spare the time for the whole song (or show), just go to 4:40 minutes into the Bertha.

Yup, and one of my big complaints in early shows is Jerry often seems to not be singing into the mic, or something. His vocals are distant or mumbled. Then in the 80’s the shows recorded to cassette often don’t sound that great. This 89 release hits the sweet spot of sound quality, the Jerry voice I most associate with the dead from my youth, and no 90’s cheese.

I'm new to this, so hopefully this isn't sacrilege...but it feels like Bob should sing two songs per set at most.

Amazing show last night. Best Dead and Co show I’ve seen. God damn Mayer was tearing it up. They were tight and Bob actually sounded really damn good too when he did sing. First set was straight forward and great. Second set for exploratory as usual in a good way. That Franklins Tower was insanity. A beautiful China Doll and Stella Blue (John should sing this one though). Could have done with one more song in the encore, but hell of a show. Might grab tickets to philly on Thursday now. Phenomenal

If you want quick highlights to listen to help >Franklins, St Stephen > not fade away were fantastic. US Blues they played note for note tighter than any live version I’ve heard. (Though not one of my favorite song).
