Going on memory here, but it seems they did a real good job on the 3CD compilation. IIRC, the 5/19/74 China > Rider is real good (not surprising for the era, of course), the 5/19 Truckin' > Jam is one of the big highlights of the entire box, I'd imagine, plus the longest-ever (46 minute) PITB from 5/21/74. And the great 6/22/73 Bird Song plus late 2nd set run from that show. I hope this comp will be available on Spotify

A 46 min Band is absurd. Not even Dark Star should go over 30 mins.

Yeah I agree. Longer does not mean better. The sweet spot for PITB is probably 15-20 minutes like the Veneta 72 one.

I see John Kahn died and someone was posting that Kahn got Jerry into heroin. Is this true? Never heard that before.

Kahn died in the mid-90's, not long after Jerry, and under very similar circumstances (ruled a heart attack in his sleep, but drugs in his system). I can't say who got the other into it, but they were partners in crime in that pursuit for sure.

Jesus, not sure how I missed that. Must have been the anniversary. So they went out like an old married couple.

Seems to be pretty consistently one of D&C's better jams

That's a gross oversimplification.

It is known, though, that in the 80's, Jerry and Kahn were doing duo shows purely for the drug money. They netted a lot more that way as opposed to the JGB shows which were split evenly between band members

There was a lot of animosity between the Dead and Kahn. In the early days of Kahn and JGB, that band was seen as a distraction from GD touring. But later on it wasn't lost on anyone in the Dead world that Jerry came back much more strung out after shows with Kahn then he did when the Dead went out on tour. Those two certainly enabled each other.

There's a sad and beautiful story Annabelle Garcia (I think) tells of Kahn and Linda (his wife) leaving the front door open of their house for Jerry to walk in at night whenever he wanted. Apparently Jerry would go there just to get away from things, spend the night, and get high because he was never judged over there for doing it.

It's great. It was the encore at my first show in '88. I wasn't familiar with it at the time, but fell in love with it that night. Always wanted that if it was gonna be a mellow encore night.
