In-Depth Song Discussion #8—-Two Step

We all know Two Steps a classic and a monster live. Whats you're favorite version? Whats you're favorite era of the song?

My personal favorite version is 5/9/01. [Only registered users can see links.]

My favorite era of the song was with Butch. Those were jazzy as hell. Im enjoyed both versions this year, more then most of the 3.0. versions. Carter does way better job "soloing" off the music, then when he's just playing by himself. Im pretty sure during most of 3.0, the whole band just stopped playing when he started soloing.

I hope Buddy will start playing keys on this again. That would make it a tad bit better now.

Fall 1998 & 2008-2010, although the TD this year had possibly my favorite tim solo.

I feel like the 97 performances are underrated. They’re a bit heavier, but short and pack a punch. Farmaid 97 is my favorite from that era.

My other favorites are 9.16.00 (flecktones) and 6.05.05.

6.11.01

The infamous "you had to be there" one which while it had way too much hype really was fucking cool to be at and is a tight compact powerhouse where you can hear how much the band feeds off the crowd going nuts in that stupid stadium.

4.21.02

Flecktones.

Definitely! Those ‘97 Two Steps were powerhouses. Straightforward, punchy, occasionally with Bela. One of my favorite years for it. But I definitely agree that the best period for that song was the years when Butch took the first solo and Carter took the second. They were a little more open and jazzy, and the build during the solos was always a knockout.

That whole crazy improv jam they go off on in the middle of the song is so good!

Another favorite is 10.2.2007 from Hollywood Bowl. Those ADSR > Two Step openers were great, and the intro lyrics were fantastic!

To be a stickler, this should be #10 not #8.

Two Step is a monster and a top 10 DMB song And it’s pretty much undebatable. This song I think has went through the most amount of evolution of any of their songs live, which makes every era of it fun to listen to and it never gets Old. I love it in every year, though my least favorite versions are the super short ‘96 ones. I love it fast and Latin like in 92-94 and I like it super jazzy from Butch era.

Yeah, I just found one of your threads and copied and paste the title. I changed it to Two Step and forgot about changing number #8

I think '02-'03 is my favorite era for this song. The Gorge '03 version and IIRC there's one or two before that as well that are just absolutely filthy.

May be in the minority, but I loved the calming Butch solos on this one.

Well, you’re now at least the fourth person to cite that era as a favorite, so it can’t be too small a minority.

My favorite Two Step I've seen is the obscure 5/21/02 version, loved the Butch and Carter interplay SO MUCH. I don't love the song as much as a lot of fans I think, but that is just preference for other great songs over a great song.

I always liked the 95 Two Steps. Particularly the LT5 version (8/23/95). I love the Two Step>>Ants from that show.

This song is what made me a hardcore DMB fan. I was obsessed with this song in my early years as a fan. I hadn't heard a song like it at the time and I still haven't since. It's very unique and went through so many iterations/eras. Those '95-98 versions do have a special place in my heart, but the '02-'03 versions are very badass as well. I just can't pick a favorite era.

It’s a great song, but it hasn’t been good since 2008. People are constantly making excuses for it, which is unfortunate. My favorites are 5/31/08 and 4/21/02
