My exact thought as well. I was kinda bummed to read that he didn't even know the time signature of his own song.

I remember reading some interviews where he said the tune was in 5/4 and now he's saying 7/4, I don't know. Perhaps that's one of the reasons why he doesn't do clinics.

Why bummed? It just shows that he doesn't even need to think about technical stuff like that, he can just play it.

I can't remember where it was.........but some interview he had, he didn't even know what models some of his cymbals he was using were. He just knew they were splashes, crashes, and china boys, stuff like that. I thought that was kinda funny. But like it was said above, he doesn't need to know all that technical stuff, he can just play it.

Speaking of his cymbals, I wonder how he chooses which cymbal he's gonna use each night? He switches his chinas around SO much. Henry has the most awesome job ever..........I will always dream of having his job

I'm sure there is a surprising amount of musicians that don't know how to read sheet music. Who needs to when you're creating your own music? But it helps to know the skills of your trade.

When you're a headlining artist like he is it doesn't really do you any good to know all the technicalities of your kit, that's what you have a tech for. You're main focus should be creating your own music and developing your craft. I'm sure he might know general details about his kit like he plays this brand of drums and plays this line of cymbals but when it comes to the finer details Henry is the guy in charge. I imagine he scouts around for new products that he thinks Carter might like or want to try out and just adds it to his kit.

He seemed to be picking one song from each studio album, so it probably doesn't mean Dreamgirl is one of his 5 favorites, but just his favorite off Stand Up. Which given what he had to choose from, well....it could have been worse.

I love how in the clip above, Dave is just standing back watching Carter, as amazed as everyone else.

"If they’re not ready to take that journey with you, then it’s going to bore them to tears. They’ll go to sleep on you, then when you do come back to the structure of the song they’re not going to be with you. There have been a few nights when we had to pull back on the reins.”

it makes me sad that they even think this way. imagine how much more they could/would do if half the audience was actually 'there for the music'.

No, it goes to show that he's somewhat incompetent when it comes to time signatures. This doesn't mean that he's not good at playing them, it just means that he can't count.

There's no way he is incompetent. I'm willing to bet it was just a slip-up.

Not incompetent with skill....just knowledge. You're right though, it could have just been a slip up.

Those singles at the end of that Seek Up are unreal. That piece alone is why Carter is just the most amazing drummer I've ever seen. Whenever someone asks me why I like him so much, I immediately show them that part of the dvd.
